Stored in a condominium garage in Toronto, we put in a new battery, fresh gas, pumped up the tires, topped up the radiator with antifreeze and the hydraulic reservoir with red (LHS) fluid. Voila - it ran, rose up and we were able to drive it out of the garage. Citroen DS are such amazing cars! Overload valve from the hydrogas system because that's empty most probably.

The engine is from its predecessor, the traction avant. So when the DS was introduced, the engine was already 20-30 years old

Citroëns sind unglaublich! Ich habe sogar das gleiche mit einem SM gemacht. Citroëns are amazing! I've even done the same to a SM.

Poor Citroen, it has seen better days. The engine sounded sick. It could be restored.

Nope, it runs just fine. The ticking you hear is the hydraulic overload valve doing overtime. I guess the hydrogas system ran empty during standstill.

В данном случае просто слой пыли в сухом и отапливаемом подземном гараже + там слой выхлопных газов от других машин.

Pas pour les voitures exportées au Canada et aux États-Unis. LHS a été utilisé jusqu'à la mi-1969.

@@Citroenvie Merci pour ta réponse. Etonnant qu'elle n'ait pas répandu tout son LDS, sachant le caractère corrosif de celui-ci. En tout cas, vous êtes de vrais courageux sachant les difficultés pour remettre en état une DS de l'autre coté de l'Atlantique.

Any car that is left for long period of time inside a garage is considerably easier to revive than the one that is let out and have the weather beat it with moisture UV basically rain and sun damage. A garage is a huge difference.

🖖🏻hello, are you sure for the LHS ? Is it not better to use LHM ? It’s used by Citroën for models made since 66/67. If this car is going to be restored and reused, this is a very great thing ! I wish you have a lot of pleasure with her !!

Yes, I am sure. LHM (green fluid) was used in Citroen D models from 1967 onward in all countries but Canada and the USA. In Canada and the USA the original LHS (red fluid) was used up until mid-1969 when Citroen finally changed over to LHM. This 1969 DS 21 was one of the last LHS cars sold in Canada.

No leaks. And it was red fluid, not green.

@@danjoe22 LHS (red fluid) is similar the brake fluid in that is hydoscopic (it can absorb moisture) and cause corrosion in the hydraulic system. Most hydraulic brake systems are sealed from the outside air by a rubber diaphragm in the reservoir filler cap, but the Citroën system is not hermetically sealed in order to allow the fluid level in the reservoir to rise and fall. LHM (green fluid) is a mineral oil and is is not hydroscopic. Much more information on hydraulic Citroëns can be found at www.citroenvie.com.

@@Citroenvie thanks for the information and the link to the citroen website. From your description I would think the green fluid is the better choice. The hydroscopic nature of the red seems to be a major drawback, but must have some advantages.

I think the red is LDS not LHS, but the LHM can appear a brown or red colour if it's left too long without being changed. I just replaced the LHM in a xantia I just bought and at first I thought it was LDS when siphoning it out due to the colour
