I live near West Allis, WI where he grew up. Very talented and always very kind to people. Always came back to the Milwaukee/W. Allis area to do concerts for low ticket prices. His arm was badly infected as a boy and the doctors wanted to amputate it but his Mother said "no". Thank goodness!

The reason the bass notes sound so good on the Steinway is because it is just that a Steinway-same reason the strings sound good to on a Stradivarius 👍

Jesus Christ this man is a piano playing machine! The ability to take a song and play it in different styles is by far one of the most amazing abilities I can imagine. Sure somebody can play a song really well, but can you play it in 5 different styles? haha

One of his early managers took him through Beverly Hills one day and then they drove to the San Fernando Valley and he asked Lee, "what do you notice here that you don't see in Beverly Hills". and lee said " I don't know but here there are T.V antenna's on everyone's roof vs. Beverly hills no one has a T.V antenna" and his manager said "correct, that's your audience", meaning the working man which that is who Liberace soon appealed to. People in Beverly Hills weren't watching T.V in the evening in those days, they were out at the clubs or dinner parties.

I never knew this guy was such a good musician; such a fine pianist. He seems to have had concert hall ability, and yet he chose to entertain the common folk. Apparently he was as great a person as he was a musician.

Indeed he was known to be a very kind man. A true showman as well with some outrageous outfits at that time.

Liberace gets a bad rap because most people came to know him after he unleashed his inner, screaming queen. He was associated with flamboyancy and musical frippery. However, if you watch most of his 1940s and 1950s works, when he is playing more "traditional" classical pieces, his ability to play is ill AF. I always enjoyed him the most because he can play a polka to Chopin and he keeps a very relaxed face and doesn't look constipated or in the grips of an existentialist crisis like most modern performers of classical music. My opinion is that if music isn't fun, don't bother. A monkey can train to play a scale but your enjoyment is what makes it enjoyable to others. RIP Liberace!!!

Allan Stark I agree with you Al. Very hard to dislike a fantastic human being who appreciated his audience as much as he did. I believe he would’ve allowed everyone down on the stage with him to witness and participate en mass like a bunch of friends he’s known forever. He was that approachable and appreciative of his public and fan base.

I have just listened to the Russ COnway version of Mack the Knife. Both super talented men. Different styles of playing but how lucky are we to have had these so talented musicians. Liberace a true showman, ahead of his time in that respect. Loved him on the variety shows.

In 1956 Elvis meets Liberace in Las Vegas when they were both doing shows. Liberace helps/gives Elvis tips on showmanship. Shortly thereafter Elvis is wearing a Gold Lam'e suit. We would never see Elvis perform in those old thread worn baggy slacks again. Elvis learned a lot from Liberace and it shows. They remained friends to the end. I would hope they are now entertaining the "Hell" out of every one in Heaven

Yes, you are correct. Liberace combined comedy with his piano playing (and some acting roles), not unlike Victor Borge in his own inimitable way. But if either of those men had chosen to, they could easily have had serious classical music careers, with their dexterity on the keyboards and knowledge of the classical genre. In fact, when he was younger, I could have seen Liberace as a precursor to prodigy Van Cliburn.
