The Montreal Expos premiered in 1969, the same season Major League Baseball celebrated its Centennial Season. The team was to play its games in the Autostade, but because it had only 25,000 seats and it needed a roof, so the team played its games at Jarry Park. Some of the early Expos featured Rusty Staub, Mack Jones, Donn Clendenon, Claude Raymond,Jose (Coco) Laboy,Gary Sutherland,Bill Stoneman and Bob Bailey.

Actually Autostade had 33,000 seats. The reason it was rejected was the cost of putting a dome over it and the Alouettes demanded steep rent. And since the stadium was federally owned, the Expos weren;t even sure if they would have the rights to renovate it. Jarry Park actually only had 3,000 seats, but the Expos would add ~27,000 new seats in time for their first season. It was only intended to be the Expos home until 1971, but because of delays and issues with Olympic Stadium (The big "owe") the Expos didn't move into their new park until the 1977 season. Such a scenario would never fly today....

Who could beat 50 cents a game to sit in the bleachers in 1969.
@geraldvanhees779 Жыл бұрын
I heard somewhere that Jerry park looked like Wrigley field?? Correct me if I'm wrong, but it looks like they didn't have bleachers behind the outfield. Also the grandstands went to far back. You couldn't see anything back there. That stadium needed an upper deck. I'm sure the cost was the reason. I do recall the cubs playing there in '73,'74,'75. Miss this venue though. Couldn't exist in this modern oligarch era. Memories. Never forgot the catcher (I believe) Barry Foote.

Rusty Staub did not hit the first Expos home run, that honour went to Dan McGinn, a pitcher.

Charlie Lea had an official no hitter for a few years until MLB took it away. Dennis Martinez threw a perfect game. And yes, Bill Stoneman had 2 for the Expos. Ross is the Expos ONLY 20 game winner in their history. Crazy stuff.

@@wdevryCharlie Lea's no-hitter is still official. It was David Palmer's perfect game that was taken away because it was rain-shortened.

Why was so much of this film devoted to players who never made the team? Very poor editorial decisions.
