I love the fact that the announcers were on point to know that there was a precedent in the 57 WS.

He absolutely needs to be in the HOF his numbers were top 5 in the game at time of his retirement + all those Gold Gloves + World Series with Dodgers and Managing the Mets to W.S Victory Most importantly he missed prime years while Serving his Country.

Last last “boys of Summer” has FINALLY come home in 2022, 51 years after his death. We need to thank the late Tom Seaver, who partitioned tirelessly, for getting Gil into baseballs hall of fame. They were 50 years to late!

Any other coach the ump would have stuck with his call. Gil Hodges had such a reputation for honesty the ump believed him…I wonder if that was the real baseball or not?

Interesting to note it was the same home plate umpire that robbed Frank Robinson earlier in the game. He got hit by a pitch and the umpire ruled it hit his bat. Watch it on KZbin. Frank was clearly upset because he was indeed hit. and Went back to the dugout to check on his injury. He was called back by the umpire. Frank thought he was out or was so upset that he forgot what the count was. He eventually struck out. The home plate umpire refused to check with the first base umpire on that call. How in the heck did the Mets' manager get the so-called ball that fast? it bounded out of play and he just happened to have a ball with shoe polish on it?

Gil Hodges purchased burial plots for him and his wife in his hometown of Princeton, Indiana though he was buried in Brooklyn. They even removed a tree at the cemetery to make room for him. Mort Zachter's biography of Gil is a great book and a must read for Mets fans. Cheers!

The pitch clearly hit Cleon---it hit his foot and caromed straight to the right. It wouldn't have done that if it hit the dirt.

Shows what a baseball genius Gil Hodges was to instinctively go for that ball knowing it'd have a mark on it.
@mptr17833 жыл бұрын
and even more of a genius to rub the ball on his own shoe before bringing it out to the umpire!

Best part was Clendennon hitting a homer right after this. Gil's gone and Clean won't talk. This is why baseball was a great game.

You would have thought Weaver would have gone off the deep end and started ranting about that call that turned the '69 World Series in the Mets favor.
@hamburg13067 жыл бұрын
Key play because clendennon hit 2 run homer afterward to cut oriole lead to 3-2.

And how sweet a memory it was for this 11 year old boy who became (forced to be) a Mets fan a few years earlier because his older brother was a Yankees fan. He had to be Mickey Mantle and I Ron Swaboda when we play ball games up in the cow fields/apple orchard across the road from where w lived in Green Haven NY in 66'/67' and been one happy fan ever since. Let's go Mets!

Earl, I'm not showing you the baseball. In my judgement, the batter was hit by the pitch and by rule has been awarded first base. If you continue, you will be ejected... Weaver (probably), [Homer Simpson groan] "Ok...I'll win a ring next year..."

Think Earl Weaver knew it was a HBP or he would of been more rampant.
