I’m just seeing this Jack, a year later. Watching this unfold on the track I’m literally trembling and have tears in my eyes. No one and I mean no one wants to seeing any drag racer be it cars or bikes to get busted up like this. Can’t say enough about modern EMT’s, rescue crews and helicopter transports which was years ago not even a thing. They literally scooped you up with no medical support and drove you to the hospital only then get the life support or medical aid you needed. Definitely scary heart wrenching stuff to watch. Jack your a true friend to the cycle drag community. Keep it up, I follow everything you do.

I didnt notice anything unusual about his tire marks at launch. There was some tire spin and maybe a little tire shake which isn't at all unusual in a fast car, I would imagine the same case for a bike. At least with a fast car you cant dead hook the tire, it needs some tire spin to gain wheel speed on launch, it looks like the same thing happens with bikes.

Have had an accident on my bike. A little different though, I was sitting at a stop light, looked back for some reason and saw a lady in a van talking on her phone coming up and not going to stop. I said that one time to myself and at that moment she crashed into the rear of my motorcycle. I couldn’t get out of her way because cars were on either side of me and I had motorcycles in front of me. She hit me so hard my bike was stuck into the bumper and grill of her van. By the way, it was on the 4th of July and we had just left the parade minutes before. I had just had a HALO removed from my head after a car accident 5 months earlier (when the airbag it me in the face) left me with a broken neck. I thought for sure my neck was broken again. But luckily it wasn’t. I don’t know how, but all that happened was my butt and the back of my legs were just horribly bruised. The Doctors in the emergency room were shocked that I didn’t have any broken bones and my neck was not broken again. Someone must have been watching over me at that moment. My butt and legs had red, blue and black bruises and that’s all. Couldn’t walk very well for awhile and sitting down was no fun, and after a couple of weeks I got back on my knew bike, but my head is on a double swivel ever since. By the way, she didn’t have insurance and she didn’t even get out of her van to see if I was ok or not. I think her husband had told her not to do anything until the Police showed up. Even then she never came to see if I was ok. It’s so great to hear he is going to be ok after such a horrific crash on the drag strip!

I don't understand the Tire issues. It's not like we don't manufacture Tires for these speeds since Cars and Bikes alike been going this fast for quite some time. You have to wonder if this so called prepping tracks for Bikes at least is a big No No. Maybe the adhesives are weakening the Compounds some how.I know we all enjoy seeing records broken but I'd rather watch them run a bit slower if that will avoid huge issues. Glad Mike is doing well and my Best wishes and prayers with him

The thing is the guys in the no bar D.O.T tyre classes and the Nitrous top fuel bikes will LOVE that track prep and it will be incredibly safe and incredibly FAST and exciting races with good consistent E.T and trap speed. This issue wasn't the track entirely it was to do with how turbo bikes deliver power to the track and how the bar bikes running bias ply squared of slicks work from a physics standpoint. A bias ply slick will expand in both width and height under load as the temp increases so ideally you want a little less traction to allow that movement and change In the slick. If it cut do.that the bike won't hook properly and the bike wont be stable. A drag radial on the otherhand will take as much traction as you can throw at it and beg for more. They don't need the growth and movement in order to hook so are totally happy with all that traction from the start vs the gradual build up.that a bias ply slick wants. There are always tradeoffs in track prep. Too little and the no bar guys on drag radials end up having huge problems, wheelspin high-sides, wheelies that flip the bikes. Lowsides when a small adjustment turns into.a tyre slide. Too much and you kill tyres quick and have issues getting power down because your surface is taking too much rubber. At this point all we know.os it was turbo bikes that had the issues, we don't even know if they were all running the same tyre. This could quite easily be a tyre QC issue. Bridgestone had one in Motogp that claimed one rider and pretty much ended the career of annother when rear tyres exploded on.the straights at 200mph. Michelin has had at least one similar issue in F1. Without the data from all the bikes that had tyre shredding issues we can't say what caused the crash and all we can say conclusively is the tyres failed. As long as all the tyre manufacturers get the data and the chassis guys get the data we will learn something useful from this event.

I noticed the bike that crashed had a Sticky Micky on it. In 2019 at THE AZ preseason test Goodyear decided to change the Big Show Cars tire compound. I was told they did by GoodYear when I asked why all the new tires they brought had a inch to 2 inches less Roll out. Because Goodyear changed the tire compound and their were not any used tires with the new compound to drag the track with NHRA chose to mount and use the ALKY tires on the rotators to drag the track with. That caused the tires to chunk really really bad on the big end. It was so scary that NHRA canceled the Saturday qualifying so they could scrape the entire track and Re prep it for race day on Sunday at the AZ nationals. I would really like to know what tires they had on the rotators aka tractors for this event. M/T tires are not called Sticky Micky’s for nothing. I don’t know first hand but I have always been told just how sticky and soft they are. If so that would greatly increase the chances of the chunking really bad at the top end with such a tight track due to using a crap ton of glue.
