Thats a donahue javalin alright. .. That 360 was so fast, its no wonder it ate transmissions! Most of theese were raced at the tracks, rode hard, and put away wet! Sweet ride.

I did a complete restore on my 68 AMX back in the 80's...It took me about 6 yrs to do, but it turned out fantastic...I became friends with the guy, in the parts dept @ the AMC dealer, and his cousin worked in the AMC warehouse, in Wisconsin....If not for those two guys, it would have really been tough finding parts.... Building the engine I also became friends with Wally Booth (AMC's Drag Racing Expert) I was consulting with him alot, because I bored and stroked a 401 I put in the car, ended up with about 525 HP @ the rear wheels...10 second Qtr. mile...Watching your video, I didnt see anything to doubt it was a true M/D though....

i paid $550 for my 73 AMX 12 years ago. still have. working on some rust and other issues from sitting for the last 5 years. was my daily driver for a few years. just needed about $300 in parts and a little elbow grease to get it running and on the road after i bought it.

Just read through the comments and read your brother sold it. I hope someone who can afford to restore it picks it up. Too bad it was missing some hard to find parts, those would have been a real challenge to find. I have a friend who has a 390 4spd Donohue, (yep, its documented) very rare car.

Right. According to the passed down story, the trans went out. The guy was getting ready to pull it and apparently died suddenly. The widow, like most widows, had no interest in it and left it sitting in a pole barn. They had to cut a large thicket down to even get the car out.

I hope you kept this car and that it's being worked on! It's clearly an original Mark Donahue car. I know you can't prove it in the serial number, but nobody would have been making clones that long ago. I'm sure it's real. Very solid too!!! You got yourself a winner!!! or at least your brother does

OHHHH....." RISLONE".....the greatest automotive elixer ever invented. If you have a bad tick in an engine; get fresh oil & filter (leave out one qt oil) add the container of RISLONE and there is a damn good chance the tick will dissapear w/in 100 miles or so. This stuff has cured the tick in 3 out of 4 old cars I've owned

It's been sold, but for future reference an unmarked block isn't the line between a"real" Donohue or not. The build date, and the equipment (SST- "Mark"spoiler- 360 or 390) are indicators only. There's no special number in the vin or on the door data tag to separate a Donohue. Only a sales invoice or other paperwork making reference would tell. It was an option package - and as such- only the paperwork confirms.
@SteveASuper
@SteveASuper 13 жыл бұрын
Don't misunderstand, mind you- I think it is a Donohue- was referring to the comment someone made about whether it had the unmarked block- these cars came with 360's and 390's and few, if any had the unmarked block which is generally known as a service replacement block with thick walls ( 360 bore ) and the thick 390/401 webs. Have seen lately that somebody is asking about if late production '70 AMX's had the block ( 401 casting number on the rear ledge ). This car's value was in the options

Well said. And one step beyond that, unless you have a build sheet, a window sticker or an original sales invoice stating so there's no way to document a legitimate Donohue Javelin. AMC didn't put any identifiers in the VIN or elsewhere to indicate whether a car is a Donohue.
@TylersNeighborhoodGarage
@TylersNeighborhoodGarage 13 жыл бұрын
@SteveASuper That's exactly right. We could not produce any paperwork to confirm it, so we had to sell it as a "possible" Mark Donohue. My brother wasn't the happeist with doing that but it was on my eBay account and I was not about to mislead someone.

Good luck with the Javelin. I'm the original owner of a 1972 Javelin and everything about your car looks good and very restorable. Your fortunate that it hasn't been tinkered with, parts removed and replaced with aftermarket crap. AMC made a very good solid car with the Javelin, and any parts they used, if it wasn't built by AMC ten it was the best of the best for back in the day of anyone who loved performance cars. Example - yours has an Carter AFB carburetor, the carburetor the Beach Boys sang about, if a manual transmission AMC used a Borg-Warner with a Hurst racing shifter, the best shifter ever made. If and automatic trans - AMC used the Chrysler Torqflite, everything else was AMC made and race proven.

What a sweet find. I can't wait to see the progress! I had an old 76 Hornet 2 door hatchback with a 308 (I think that's what it was) The body went the way of the doe doe but you couldn't kill it mechanically. Did burnouts like it was born with a smoke stack up its ass. Drove it to the scrap yard and watched them crush it! Wish KZbin was around in the early 80's, woulda made a great vid.

I had a '71 Javelin SST with a 304 and 3 speed manual. Shift mechanism crapped out on me and had to really search for replacement parts. Got it back to driveable condition, but the shifter still had quirks. Sold it for $850 to a Javelin fan who knew how drive it. Don't think I'd ever want to go through that again, but it was fun to drive and looked cool.
@TylersNeighborhoodGarage

@J4BBL The window sticker was the most important part, and we didn't have it. It was also missing the air cleaner and scoop inserts, and people that looked at it said they are nearly unobtainable at this point. It sold somewhere close to $3,000, and I have my doubts if the person that bought it is capable of restoring it. A person that WAS capable passed on it, and that's too bad.

That thing was ran hard if it only lasted 9 or 10 years on the road before needing parts. Still, it probably is a Donohue edition, a rare AMC indeed. That baby is in rough shape but savable. All about how big your check book is.

Reaction to Knox's claim / comment might be blown out of proportion a bit. Has anybody ever considered that she meant 190 KMH - not MPH.? There were a LOT of AMX's & Javelins sold up here in Canada as well, where we use the Kilometers per hour rating. 100 KMH = 62 MPH.

@jeepers2655 Thing is, we don't have 25k to restore it, and that's what it would have required. More than one AMC collector came by here to look it over and said the same thing. In the end it couldn't be proven it was a real Donahue, and you just can't risk that kind of money on a hunch.

The one year only grille along with the codes on the door tag signify it is a 1970 Javelin lol. and there is no such thing as a 71-74 AMX. There IS a AMX appearance and performance package offered on the Javelin, but that makes it a "Javelin AMX". And the wing may fit but it isnt the same. Now, whether or not this is a Donohue or not is debatable, but it is most definitely a 1970 Javelin.
@RockotheCat13
@RockotheCat13 11 жыл бұрын
Further, the Javelin won the Trans Am title in '71 , '72, and '75. Drivers included George Follmer AND Mark Donohue. /// Finally, the 360 V8 had a top speed of approx. 115 MPH. ----- that WOULD equal out to 190 KMH. ///// Were there any '74 MD Javelins produced ? Who knows. I know that 3 or 4 1970 Ford Rancheros made it "out the back door" with the Hemi Boss 429, and there is absolutely NO documentation or proof that they were built or what happened to them. Maybe a '74 MD Javelin does exist.

Well, the buyer didn't look wealthly, that's for sure, so I don't know. A couple AMC "experts" came and looked at it beforehand but sniffed with indecision because there wasn't documentation to prove it was a Donohue. If it had been mine instead of my brothers I would have put it in dry storage and sat on it a while until it got more rare. Don't see how anyone could go wrong with an actual SST.

I'm pretty sure this was a Mark Donohue Javelin, but without the paperwork it can't be known 100%. It is unlikely someone would have cloned one prior to it being laid to rest next to that shed and the license plate from 1979 tells that tale... Unless this video was faked, of course... which I don't believe is the case either.

***** Above the headliner AMC put each car's order sheet, the birth certificate of any car. That will tell all, but deciphering the AMC code on the driver's door is the first step. I'm the original owner of a '72 and the code on this 1970 isn't familiar, but the owner of first generation Javelins would know. On the '71 thru '74 Javelins the code with the letter "H" is a 304 eng, a "P" for the 360, and a "Z" for the 401.
