1970 Buick GSX 455 Stage 1 4-Speed Muscle Car Of The Week Video #45
Here's one for the Buick fans... a 1970 Buick GSX 455 Stage 1 4-Speed in Saturn Yellow! Buick made 678 of these luxo-rockets in 1970, and they were certainly out of character for the Buick brand. Producing 360 horsepower and 510 ft. lbs. of torque, these capable street brawlers were running with the fastest Muscle Cars from any manufacturer. In fact, Motor Trend Magazine clocked a Stage 1 car running the quarter mile in 13.35 seconds @ 105.5 mph in '70, fast enough to be called their quickest test of 1970. The Brothers Collection never disappoints, and it certainly appeals to all Muscle Car brands.
In this episode, we take a look at the history of the Buick GSX, along with 1970 Buick GSX 455 Stage 1 specs.

After highschool I worked for a Buick dealer in Peoria, Illinois. He had one in his showroom and couldn't sell it and wanted to make room for an Electra 225 convertible. So he let me drive and keep it until I left for the military. (About 3 Weeks) Never had so much fun driving a car in my life.

These cars were a master piece from Buick. Big and really fast. Watched a new one race at the drag strip all night at 75&80 Drag Way. That car ruled the track.

To this day I regret trading my GS STAGE 1 4spd. in '78. My dad got it for me in '74. All I did was install Camaro radials on it & fed it SUNOCO 260 despite my dad advising against it, my mufflers were gone by l8 75. I wanted a Trans am, but, dad knew I'd be dead in no time. I had power steering,& brakes,front disc I did not understand why a 4spd had no console & bench seat. A/C ,room for 6ppl, brown with black vinyl top & interior. Gr8 car to travel. I couldn't find much aftermarket performance parts. But, I loved it. AWESOME MASTERPIECE.

There may have been a block Crack occasionally, but for the record, I can personally vouch for the extreme durability of the 455 buick block, and overall superior structural integrity of the engine, from personal experience with way more than just a few Buick engines. In fact Buick had actually produced two four bolt expetimental main blocks, but decided that it was absolutely not necessary to produce them in mass because of the extreme reliability of the two bolt main blocks. The only time that I ever saw any issues with the lower ends were because someone ran them low on oil or ran the engines hot, then they would blow head gaskets, or spin the bearings, either is an understandable reason for causing damage to the engine. With that being said I personally beat the hell out the ones that owned, and never ever had any lower end issues. I never even witnessed any with cracked blocks, and I worked at a buick dealership from 1979 til 1985, as a line mechanic, as well as my father working for Buick Motor Division for 25 years, and my family owned two srage one cars, abd had a stage 1 engine just because. One of the stage ones was my grandmother's 1973 Centurion that my father ordered new with the stage one option, and by brother had bought his previously owned 1972 white stage 1 Gran Sport, which was an awesome car in magnificent condition. I could kick his ass for letting all three of them get sold, but in my defense, I was a thosand mikes way when all of this went down, and without my knowledge.

I think the 455 Buick engine was very underrated . Several years back I had a customer that raced the 455 and it was one of the fastest cars out there . But , he wouldn't spend the money for a set of good rods and they continually broke between the rod nut and the center of the cap . Never seen one come apart anywhere else . They were definitely torque monsters . The GSX is a very unusual car , I saw a picture once at the Buick Nationals of 10 or 12 of the yellow ones lined up side by side , thing of beauty .

But if I had the choice of one muscle car that was made by GM it would probably be a 70 Buick GS455 Stage 1. Awesome combo of speed and comfort. Definitely the coolest and fastest car ever made by Buick in their entire history. The 80's Turbo Buicks were pretty fast in their day too

I live in Michigan and he kept it for awhile and I watched it rust and rust, one day I noticed it was gone, he said someone offered him ( I don't remember how much ) I was so disappointed, I could never find one to buy, I never new at the time how rare they were.I hope that the person that bought it knew what he was buying, ( It did have air ) but I'd love to have it still today. Beautiful car. Thanks for all the great information on it. I wish you could give that much detailed information on the majority of the other cars. Production numbers are always great to hear. Which of course will cause in some instances controversy. The more information the better. In 1991, I received a call from a friend that Charlie Sheen wants to look at my 1970 Superbee 440, 6 pack, and possibly make an offer. So, I told him to call them back and come on over. Someone had seen the car, parked at my friends paint shops display window. I lent it to him for a few weeks prior to being moved back to my garage. A couple hours later, Charlie pulled up to my driveway in 70 Buick GSX. He had people from Barrett-Jackson with him and his posse. I had just recently bought the car. So I was not exactly motivated to sell it. When it comes to cars. They are like my children to a point. There is always a number that will separate me from one of my cars. And if he was willing to meet that number. I was more than willing to sell it. So, after having his representatives look over the car and asked some questions and check documentation. I got to speak with Charlie. He was very down-to-earth. It was just two car guys talking. So that's my big brush with fame.

I’m from Washington State. At least at the time there was 2 in the state. One in Seattle and one in Spokane. We were sophomores in high school. My friends Dad must have been a head honcho Buick salesman because it was his driver from Seattle to the suburbs. He let us take it one afternoon and we raced around for hours. I was more of a Volkswagen guy but that was one of the big thrills of my youth. I still can’t believe my friends Dad let us knuckle heads take it out. I remember the spiel about the biggest engine and how Buick wasn’t interested in The muscle car scene. I don’t know maybe it wasn’t that big of a deal to the dealership. Maybe he wouldn’t have trusted us with a station wagon with fake wood grain shelf liner on the side.

I had the opportunity to purchase a 1970 Buick GSX coming out of high school in 1970. I bought the car off the show room floor at Bill Hembrough Buick in Rockford Ill for $4600. It was a saturn yellow non stage one with the turbo auto trans. It was a radio delete car but had the dealer install a am radio. As a young kid I drove the car to death and it never let me down.It held its own to most street racing. Sold the car about 1975. And like everyone I sold it for what a hood would cost now. $1200.

I was 17 when the 70 GS455's were introduced to quite some fanfare. My dad was a Buick guy and so was I and I still remember standing at the magazine rack at the local grocery store reading the MT magazine article when they tested the two 70 GS455 Stage 1's in the Arizona desert. The automatic was slightly quicker than the 4 speed which was not unusual and I do remember them commenting on the heat and both cars dumping a lot of coolant from their reservoirs. I later learned that both cars were prepped by Jim Bell of Kenne-Bell Enterprises in West Covina, CA. I had many phone conversations with Bell when rebuilding my 67 GS400 motor and bought the cam, lifters and headers from his shop. Jim Bell was legendary in knowing how to make Buicks go fast so his tuning tweaks on those two Stage 1's were most certainly how they turned those times. When I say tuning I'm referring to carb setup, ignition timing, tire pressures, etc., not swapping any components. Those hood scoops were where they were for styling reasons and actually were found to impede airflow once the car was moving as airflow over the hood created a negative pressure zone where those inlets were placed. A standard thing for anyone looking to make their GS 455 a bit quicker was to flip over the top plate of the air cleaner. This created about 1" circular gap exposing the filter to allow better airflow to the engine. As you mentioned the 400/430/455 blocks were never designed with the idea of racing and they had oiling and strength issues. The oiling problems were cured for the 455 iteration by Buick working with Jim Bell and I incorporated those modifications into my 400 rebuild. With the oiling mods the blocks were pretty solid to 550-600 HP applications but above that they need girdles. I nearly totaled my 67 in a street race and though it was repaired I sold it and bought a saturn yellow 70 GSX Stage 1 automatic with 18K miles from the original owner for $2300 in 1971. Never raced the GSX but had a lot of fun with it and never should have sold it. A very cool, unique car.

12 bolt rear ends were standard issue on all GS Skylarks & all 400 + cu in Buicks buolt in Oshawa Ontario. Oshawa Car plant & Truck plant always tried to out do the other Assembly Plants in America on some form. For example, all GM light duty trucks buolt in Oshawa with a small block 350 4 barrel engine between 73 & 87 had 4 bolt main bearings & heavy duty front sway bar if so equipped.

This is my 'dream car' that I WILL HAVE SOMEDAY if I ever became a millionaire. I live in VA and someone near my town has a GSX 'clone' that is a very well-done Skylark or GS made to look like the GSX. Not sure if it is a Stage I car, though. Make mine Saturn Yellow with the Stage I and four-speed manual transmission, please.

wish I could say it was mine, but no. my best bud in hi school had a bone stock 1965 GS factory 4 speed that he always had me drive if we were racing, cause I was real good at handling that Borg warner t10. my favorite memory was racing a 65 falcon that had a race built 289 and staying side by side until i grabbed third and at that point all he saw was our taillights. thanks for the memories.

And after the 1st time. I seen a stage 1 gsx . I never looked at a Gto or Chevelle ever again. Good old Flint engineering at it's finest. Buick didn't do it once but twice in the gsx and the gnx and turbo regals. After all these years they are still causing a stir in the Automotive world. Go buick!!!!!

Yes you are correct. The 1941 Buick Road Master, and the 1941 Buick Century with the 320 cubic inch Straight 8, With compound carburetion (Dual Carbs, Two Barrels), and with 165 HP Were the Fastest Domestic production cars produced that year. 165 HP doesn't seem like a lot of HP by today's standards, But it was a lot back then. Packard's pretty much held the titles of fastest cars in the late 30's. According to Walt Brugger's book, The 1941 Buick Story, The Road Master and the Century were the two fastest. With the 4,700 to 4,900 Lb Buick Limited coming in a close 5th. Amazing. Buick's were definitely in a class of their own that year.

The spoilers were functional on the car. The cars were tested extensively for best rear spoiler design. Both give best down force at speed. Only the Corvette handled better. The front spoiler also has a horizontal baffle that reduces engine compartment pressure at speed. The car returned better gas mileage and top end than regular GS's.

I have a high school buddy that had a 1970 or 1971 White GSX stage II setting in his garage... He bought the car in 1978 and it has been nothing but a show car and garage queen for the last 30+ years.. The car was mint I think it had like 58k on it, I haven't seen him in or the car in years I heard rumor that he finally sold it couple years ago but I remember it was one bad ass car...

That "360 hp" rating for the Stage-1 was bogus, just like many of the HP ratings by the auto-makers back in the day. Most folks who knew these engines well, have stated that the Stage-1 made in 1970 ( all later years lost power due to the government regulations ), made AT LEAST 420hp. If ya consider how heavy these cars were, and the fact the magazine testers got slightly faster or near equal times to the Hemi's and the LS6, which both made far more hp than Buick's factory claim of only "360 hp" for the Stage-1 made in 1970.......you would have to conclude that they truly DID make much more hp than advertised.
@twoeightythreez
@twoeightythreez 5 жыл бұрын
Thats good, because the gross hp rating was a big overrating as it was. Buick's rating was more realistic. That makes the 700 to 1000hp modern day monsters even more impressive :)
@stretch54
@stretch54 5 жыл бұрын
@@twoeightythreez Yeah. Engine and car technology has continued to advance throughout the time of the car. You can't compare the early muscle cars to today's version...... Now it looks like the quickest cars going forward from now on are going to be battery powered. Even now the Tesla is one of the quickest cars made and it's not really even built for that reason. Crazy stuff is happening in the car world.

I think this GM mid-sized platform made for the perfect daily driver, whether it was a Buick GS or a GTO or a 442 or a Chevelle SS. For me, this was the perfect size and shape. The 1970 Chevelle LS6 got all the attention, but this Buick might have been the best of the lot.

GSX Stage 1 aka "Hemi Killer"
@DONDIVA1969
@DONDIVA1969 9 жыл бұрын
swasey1952 That’s not true. Kenne-Bell who specialized in Buick racing parts exclusively back then found that the best shift point for the Stage 1 engine was 5500 rpm. It could do 13.90’s straight off the showroom with no tuning at all. Most muscle car racing back then was done on the street stop light to stop light and the Stage 1 option was optimized for that. On the street with similar gears it would destroy Hemi’s and LS6’s because they had to be rev’d up to get in the power band. Stage 1 was strong just off idle. On the track the cars were pretty even in stock form but the GS usually had the edge because it stayed in tune longer with the milder hydraulic cam. www.teambuick.com/reference/library/455_ken_bell.php

@DONDIVA1969 9 жыл бұрын
swasey1952 Everybody knows the LS6 was a pig off the showroom floor. You might run mid 14's with it stock. You had to dyno tune it and run open headers to get it to run decent. That big cam was choked up with the stock manifolds and mufflers. Stage 1 was one of the very few cars that could run in the 13's pure stock. Easy target for a Stage 1 both of them in stock condition.

swasey1952 The AHRA ASA Class record-holding Chevelle LS6 for the 1970 season posted a best of season trap speed of 106.76 mph, so your 121mph is either complete BS or relies on a hell of a lot of performance bolt-ons you have chosen not to mention.

You are correct. I used to have a Buick GSX stage1. It was the Saturn yellow color. And back in the day I raced a few Hemi cars and beat them everytime. Even Hot Rod magazine (I forget the year and month) put out an article of how the Buick GSX stage1 was a hemi killer. I still regret ever selling the car. Because it was a Buick, everyone thught of it as being just a mild mannered muscle car. But in reality when you stomped on the throttle it became a real beast.
