the SD455 was a Diamond in the rough..the 440 still would still gap it..how? may you ask? well the SD had by far the largest ports of any engine except the ram air v 400 which the SD inherited from that program..it also had a cast iron crank in a 4 bolt main cap heavily reinforced block (go figure that one),forged,magna fluxed and shot peened connecting rods.. also a dry sump provision in the block for serious road racing..but suffered from low compression and a sleepy cam..basically emissions killed it..now the Ram Air V 400 and SD421..eww boy that were some engines there son :)

Actually the 70s did advance auto tech a great deal. Remember the industry was FORCED to produce those smogs motors before they had a chance to work out the technology. The government is responsible for those crap cars. But the performance research to do it right didn't stop. The first mass produced ECU systems came out in the 70s, and eventually resulted in the systems we have now. There was talk of efi, ceramic coatings, and plastic engine parts in the 70s we all thought was nuts. It wasn't. Ya the new cars were so slow, oh so stupid slow. But we're making up for it now. There are many street cars today that will stomp a 1975 Pro Stock car and do it on pump gas.

Let me tell you . I owned 1974 SD 455 trans Am auto 3:42 gears, and it was mega fast. Here's the thing.....I'm kinda old but that means Ive been up close and personal with the best of the muscle car's time. The big problem was tires....fabulous power means nothing if it just shreds the factory rubber. Many of the 12 sec time slips required slicks installed to do it. Pontiac went a different route with RTS ....better tires...tuned shocks....springs....sway bars.....very low to the ground designs. Forget drag times these cars drove better and faster than just about any production car the masses could afford ! The 455HO not mentioned here was affordable....fast...and gobs of torque under your right foot. It was a thrill you just couldn't get enough of......Pontiac got right.

The Dodge would never have passed emissions standards 4 years later. That's why it's not really a race to compare different generations of cars. But if you took a 74 Dodge against the 74 Firebird, then they would both be legal cars & that race would be closer. I had a 75 TA back in the day, & it was a dog with 2.41 gear ratio. But it was still very easy back then, to return the car's performance to near 1970 levels for just a few hundred bucks, & that car finally ran 13's on street tires, & got 24 mpg's at 55mph, with just a screwdriver & a hacksaw for most of the mods. Of course eventually I dropped in better gears, & knocked a few more seconds off my time. Never pulled the engine either. And naturally that car could actually make turns on the street at speed, without flipping over on its roof like the straight-line-only Dodge. Let's see Mopar's best car in 1974!? I'm sure it would lose to this Challenger by a similar margin. Let's not forget Pontiac kept muscle alive long after everyone else gave up.
@RoadRunnergarage85704 жыл бұрын
I didn't realize the TA was only a 400... HUGE edge to the Challenger then...
@W1se0ldg33zer4 жыл бұрын
What you wanted that year for a Challenger was the 340 6-pack. You could actually drive that on a daily basis. The big-block equipped Challengers either plowed into turns or you steered with the throttle. Horrible driving cars. That Trans-Am is just a slow pig. It actually sounded like the Mopar let off right at the end. The Trans Am was more than likely closer to stock than the Challenger was I have a 76 T/A 400 4spd that is what those cars ran with the 3:42s with good tires an driver. I also think the guy in the Challenger held back a bit .

This was a bad comparison, try a SD-455 and you'll see a totally different race.

Why not put the 1970 455 firebird vs the 1970 440 challenger?

Roadrunner had a commercial where they were doing reverse burnouts to show the strength lol

The problem is found in how the race is between 2 cars of absolutely different eras. 4 years doesn't usually mean so much but between 1970 and 1974 it did. If you want a REAL match up? Either find a '70 Trans Am to race the Challenger or find a '74 Challenger to race this Firebird in the Video. A 70 Trans Am brings far more to the race and not surprisingly a '74 Challenger wasn't available with '70s performance oriented 440.

MONSTER edge to the Challenger.. 2 seconds difference!!

That went as expected. Anything past 1972 was pretty damn slow for the most part.
