I owned a 1970 SS 396 (402 375 HP) L-78 numbers matching with Muncie M-21 close ratio 4 speed and optional 4:10 rear 12 bolt Posi. It had headers on it. If guy bellow's friend ran 13.60's @ 104 MPH with Z-28, my L-78 probably ran a few tenths faster. I never took it to the track, but on the highway I could past cars with ease. My current Camaro is the other BB 1970 SS 396 (402 350 HP) L-34 with TH 400 and 3:31 12 bolt Posi rear and headers and true dual exhaust (two small Mufflers (not transverse muffler) It is very fast too. I love the aggressive styling of the 70 1/2 Z28 and the 1970 version of the Chevy LT1 350 is maybe the baddest small block of the entire muscle car era. And to top it off they are maybe the best handling muscle car ever built along with the 70 1/2 Pontiac Trans Am. The 2nd Gen Camaros were a love hate thing for many. For me, I loved the new look. First time I saw one was when my older brother was going to Chevrolet dealerships looking for a new 1970 LS6 Chevelle. When I saw the 70 1/2 Z28 Camaro sitting in the show room I really liked the new aggressive styling and slightly longer wheelbase. What was really great was the LT1 350 under the hood. My brother never found the LS6 Chevelle because they were already sold out and no more were going to be made in the 1970 model year. It was July of 1970 when my brother settled on a cranberry red with black interior LS5 Chevelle. It had a four speed and bucket seats with a console. No strips and it didn't have cowl induction either. It was a strikingly beautiful car. His plans were to buy a LS6 crate engine the next year, but his beautiful Chevelle was stolen in the GM Truck & Bus parking lot while he was working. He was so hart broken when he come to understand his car was stollen. I worked at the Truck & Bus plant when I turned 18 and cars were stollen out of the parking lots quite often. Little did we know at the time 1970 would be the last of the high compression factory performance engines for decades to come. To end this comment on a high note. My brother replaced his LS5 Chevelle the next year with a used 1970 Black with white stripes SS Chevelle with a blue printed and balanced 472 big block. It had 13 to 1 compression, open chambered heads, long tube racing headers, roller cam, dual point distributor, electric fuel pump and a large single Holley carburetor with a 4:88 possie traction rear end. With the single Holley and slicks it ran low 11:40's consistently at Michigan, Lapeer drag way. Oh yes, I forgot to mention it was a beefed up 400 automatic transmissions. Cursing Woodward Ave on warm summer nights in that car are memories I will never forget. The closest race my brother had was a 1970 Baldwin Motion 454 Camaro. When that Chevelle hit second gear the engine had so much torque it was incredible. That engine in a lighter car like a 70 1/2 SS Camaro would have even more awesome. Love the 2nd gen Camaros. Thanks for sharing the original 70 1/2 Z28 Camaro. It is a true and magnificent time capsule.

This car's styling was ahead of its time in 1970. Mopar was just getting around to mimicking the first generation Camaro in '70 with the Cuda - which leaned heavily on its styling from the first gen Camaro. While Ford's Mustang in '70 was following its trend to increase overall size of the Mustang, which started in '67 and by 1973 it was so huge that Ford had to reinvent it with the Mustang 2 - nuff said on that car. Yep the 70 Camaro was good and mimicked cars like Ferrari more so than anything on this side of the Atlantic. I still prefer the 67 or 68 Camaro over the 70, but it's so close as to almost be a tie. Chevy really had things going in 1970, perhaps their best year ever. Thanks Kevin for video and its subject, the awesome 70=1/2 Z/28 - better late than never to throw in a comment and like.

The last I saw that car it was sitting on widened Rallyes and it got offered to me for 6 grand. Still kicking myself for not selling my bikes and keeping that forever. Throughout the history of the camaro, the z-28 was a package that was attainable for the common man. They were pretty common too. Then chevrolet reintroduced the 5th gen camaro and slowly got around to introducing the z-28 but their z-28 concept was a halo car - well outside the price range of the common man. A base corvette was cheaper than a z-28. It was a stupid move on chevrolet's part.

Z28’s were & are all about performance in the lightest weight version of Camaro, hence the 302 DZ motor was ideal at the time but the turn of the 70’s brought the LT1, which was also a small block that weighed the same but actually had more lbs of torque than cubic inches. The DZ, while higher revving for the day, actually lacked low-end torque. Yes, the 350 would’ve been too much displacement for TransAm rules, but the LT1 really was the best of both worlds (lbs/hp).

Hi Kevin, You definitely hit the nail on the head, the 1970 & half Z28 are the meanest, tuffiest, bad ass Camaro going. They look aggressive, go hard & such a beautiful body with the curved back window. Those LT1 350 CI supposedly were one mean screaming engine. All round one nice pony car. Prefer an RS with the split bumper Enjoying all your videos Where is a episode on a full size Impala 427 or 71 Plymouth Fury GT Louis in Australia Keep them coming

Really tough choice for me between a 69 Z28 or a 70 1/2 Z28. I love that little 302 small block and the styling of the 69. That 302 engine sounded awesome with that chambered exhaust system they had and the 302 made waaay more horsepower than it was rated at. But the LT1 350 in the 70 1/2 Z28 was maybe the meanest small block of the muscle car era and the handling of the second gen Z28 is excellent so I'd probably have to go with the 70 1/2. I'm a Mopar guy but I love classic muscle cars regardless of the manufacturer

Old school is always better than the synthetic new stuff. The only exception was the Nova in the 80s. Far better than the 60s and early 70s.......... That was sarcasm.....

I sold a 70 1/2 Z28 with 65 thousand miles for a Grand National GNX and still own it with under 5000 klm bcs im in 🇨🇦 it's a part of my retirement plan and with what there selling for today in 24 years im sure I did the right thing I would of probably kept the Z28 but it was wrecked by my brother acting stupid in the rain and ditch it i got it and rebuilt it and sold it and every once in a while I see one and call my brother on the phone and tell him he's a dumb ass and hang up lol just to piss him off after 38 years of not letting him live it down

To me the burnout s are more impressive without bumping the brakes. Then you know you've got something.

I like the Audi Max came with there. I had a 70 1/2 green dark green white strikes right after the se with the floor in Virginia and it was three 5360 I trade in my 69Z 28 for it and it came with air, it, automatic and air.

The LT 1 had screw in rocker studs the 302 had press in studs

I've always been partial to the full bumper but maybe that's just because that's what my camaro has. I've always liked this design because it was muscley but also had a sleekness to it that other muscle cars didn't have. Some of its style almost seems European

Had a 69 z/28 and also a 70 z/28. The 70 was hands down the better car. Prefer the 69 styling tho.

It’s a great car, but I prefer the split front bumper.

Unless someone parks by braile at the grocery store then youd want a full one. btdt Great cars. ALways drooled over the 69 til I drove a fresh one with dual quads. Real bad...like 0 torque. Needs 4.56 to even move

The 1969 Z28 is a classic, when my last Z28 was stolen & destroyed, I looked for 1969 Z28. Bought some cars at Navy DRMO hopping to get lucky and find another Z28. By happenstance of luck, didn't happen. Ended up with a Topaz

original paint ...2:53 I didn’t know that at the factory they put matching color gas tank bracket .

Apparently the tank straps were installed and left sort of partially hanging when the bodes were painted. It's odd, but correct and normal according to people who know more about F-bodies than I do.
