Leaving out of Eatonville Wa. to head to the 2013 Yakima ATHS national convention. This is a 1970 3 axle with a 8v-71 (318), 13 speed fuller. Seems a bit slow but I am hauling a heavy trailer, jeep, and another very heavy GMC 3 axle, weighing in at about 55000lbs.

Man, that brings back some memories. First job driving was hauling produce up to Eureka, CA from the Bay Area, with a 1970 COE. 8V71, 5x4, air starter, and Vickers air assist steering. What fun starting it up when someone was walking by!!!

Loved the video, great shifting. Brings me back to my childhood getting to ride in a 1972 FR-COE with a 12-71 hauling 5 bunks "shotgun" of 8 foot trees to a paper mill (140,000 #'s on 5 axle trailer). Only thing I seen in the video that was out of place is the newer style shifter handle. Figured for sure it would be the old chrome disc type roadranger/fuller shifter handle with the splitter in the disc. Great entertainment, thanks cheers Joe in Canada

Thank you so much for leaving this video up, some time maybe a year ago I played this video,it brings back many memories, some of the beautiful Wash. State , but more of the Freight Shaker and the twin hump Yamaha, many people ( Drivers ) didn't like them, but I had and drove one all over this America with many, many trouble free miles, ( about 9 years) now you have a 13 speed and I had a twin stick 16 speed Spicer , I watched your video at times....well my computer crashed and I lost all my saves, and today I was just looking and lo and behole here you are , Thanks for a great real video of a driver that treats his truck with respect and common sense he actually drives the ol Detroit like he's not mad at it GOD's blessings Johnny b.

Dang, this was really special. My Dad used to drive a Freightliner back in the day - he used to take me in it on short local trips over the summer. If I remember correctly, from the looks of the bouncy ride, I'd say you didn't have a trailer hooked up? I think I remember things smoothed out with some weight attached. The sound of that buzzer on the ignition before start-up - and then that amazing engine comes to life. I remember a governor (if thats correct?) would make the engine do this very cool pattern of light revs, which I thought sounded so cool. Sure miss my Dad, sure wish I could go back and ride with him again. Thank you for this great memory and ride!!

Nice! Reminds me of the days in the early 70s when my dad would make a local run and he would hide me in the cab of his COE B model MACK for a ride along! Everytime I smell Diesel fuel I'm reminded of my father.

Those old Detroit 318's (with the 13-speed) were quite the deal back in the day. You might think it feels "slow", but that's what it was -- a workhorse, not a power machine. And they ran forever. (It was best if you slammed your thumb in the door before starting a trip, so you had the right "attitude" to start driving -- mash the pedal on the right, shift at 2100rpm... and keep shifting...) 🤣

I once drove a 73 COE IH with the DDA 318. Steel dash, no PS, loud sucker ;-) Just mash your motor and shift lol.

It looks like a considerable amount of play in that steering system bringing wheel back and forth 3 -4 inches just to keep it straight.

+Mad Murdock Lol. Lots of turns of that wheel to make turns. No power steering you definitely need all the mechanical advantage you can get. Surprising the steering is pretty tight on this one. Takes a lot of movement to make small corrections. Needless to say my arms were tired after 150 miles of mountain roads.

Hey man, nice vid. That thing sounds just like our old blue GMC Cabover we used to have. It had a 318 Detroit under the Cab. She would scream but she was tough as nails. We used it as our backup truck Incase one of our main one's were broke down and we had to take a load. I loved the sound of a screaming Detroit! Never got old to me. What engine does your truck here have? Has to be a Detroit, sure sounds like one anyway with that high winding.

This COE is back when Freightliner and White were still partnered up. Also, noticed that it has a 13 speed trans, with a low horsepower Cummins engine. I was surprised that the engine wasn't popping revs higher than he was over revving the engine - Cummins are notorious for that, leading to ring blow outs. Also noticed that the dash set up is for a heater, cooler box, so this particular unit didn't have a heater, or air conditioner. Plus, all the fuses were right there next to the driver, on the doghouse. Boy, I have seen this style in many years, since my grandfather used to bring his unit home, all the time.

Nope, sure sounded like a Cummins, to me. Of course, I haven't had to much experience with either Detroit, or Cummins, as most of the trucks I drove had Cats in them.
