I own 4 capri´s the last wasn´t released in Portugal where i live and had to order it from the netherlands where i have a friend(now he lives 50km´s from me in portugal ,sunny all year around (this year as made cold and rained a lot like it never hapened in the last 25 years, minimum temperature 5 degrees celsius) who sent me cars to sale and i choose that specific car because of the colour scheme that i have a fiesta 1.4S(this one instead of the alloy wheels like i have in a white sportive 1600 XR2i )as some caps but very nice ones have the look of racing wheels with a center in the shape of a screw with tightening in the form of a hexagonal screw and white with pearl painting and because they are screwed to the iron wheel with four screws they never left the wheels, this fiesta as lager and longer measures in the chassi like the RS1600(one year older)the regular XR2 are in portugal and Spain a 1.3Lengine with a dual carburator , also have a four door sierra 1.8 turbo diesel from the same year ,all have blue paint metalized and half the body bellow a trim with large dark grey plastic and a red strip in the midle ,the cars have a grey paint that seems rubber type having full extras with two extra round lights like i have in the 80´s older escort XR3i model, they have alloy wheels with round holes with the cut on the round shape holes painted with a darker grey shade, similar to Alfa-romeu´s early 90´s alloy wheels

An all-time classic. Whichever way you look at it, it must be one of the most beautiful vehicles ever produced. And the performance was right up there too. Never owned one, sadly, but a friend did in the early 70s (in South Africa). It was a car desired by all.

There isn’t even a place in East Anglia called Anglia! I used to drive a ‘72 3-litre GXL (twin headlamps), which had the luxury of a radio and 8-track player! It was a very torquey engine and it was easy to spin the rear wheels in most gears in the wet. In fact, the tyres (185/70), brakes and handling weren’t really up to the performance of the engine, which sounded lovely. Thanks for the review and drive.

Capri did not run from 1964, it was introduced in 1969. The Capri which was around in 64 was based on the Ford Classic and was completely different. Also, being an H reg, the Essex 3 litre at that stage was only giving 128bhp, it wasn't until late 1970 (J reg) when the engine was revised and the output increased to 138bhp.

In NZ the Essex 3.0 was rated at 140bhp in the '71 Mk4 Zephyr. It had a large dual throat 40/40 Weber downdraft with both barrels opening by direct mechanical linkage and simultaneously too..! This was to give a really great throttle response, because the earlier NZ Mk4's were berated by Kiwi drivers as being 'gutless wonders' for towing etc, those early ones being all 2.5 V6's. After the early complaint the 2.5 engines were no longer brought into NZ, and the entire Mk4 range, regardless of spec, were all 3.0 dual throat Weber powerhouses. That engine had good power, and the big, massive frontal area Mk4's would still top out at over the ton easily..! 103mph on a smooth paved level straight to be exact..!

it wasn't terribly quick (Australia at the time had V8 Ford Falcon GT/GTHOs, Holden Monaro its V8s / Torana XU1 and Chrysler its Valiant Charger 4.3 litre triple webered 6, all with much more horsepower) but the Essex V6 was a nice motor that sounded wonderful. I still hanker for this V6 - perhaps refreshed with present day seals and gaskets, bigger radiator, brake updates, sorted suspension for ride comfort and a 5 speed manual PLUS (because I'm in Australia), air conditioning

The car used to be my dad's and when I first got the drivers licence I bought it off him. He wanted to trade it in for a new 1969 Ford Falcon. The Valiant is still with me today, garaged and maintained by me, a mechanic myself. Make a temporary email address and sent the email to me, names Mick. I will then send you the many customised Valiants I had in my youth. Once you get the photos you then can delete the email address.

In my opinion the Mk1 Capri was the best looking and most fun car Ford ever produced. Back in their day we called these long stem mirrors "Corsair mirrors" as we fitted a lot of them on the Ford Corsair. They worked ok as long as you took the trouble to adjust the head of them properly with a spanner, trouble was that you were in and out of your seat until it was adjusted right.. Door mirrors did catch on eventually which were a good improvement.
@Mortimer501452 жыл бұрын
I agree about the uselessness of wing mirrors: far too small and therefore an enormous blind spot. About the only thing in their favour is that you can see both mirrors (and the road ahead) without turning your head, whereas checking the passenger-side door mirror (when pulling in after overtaking) requires taking your eyes off the road ahead and turning a long way to the left. Likewise when reversing, when you need to scan both mirrors (ideally simultaneously) to check for clearance from gateposts and walls, and being centred between lines in a parking bay. With wing mirrors, you can't have a passenger mirror which normally shows the road behind but which automatically dips to show the rear wheel in relation to the kerb when you are parallel parking and need to get the rear wheel as close as possible before turning into the parking space. Things that we take for granted nowadays but which we (or rather our parents) didn't have in the 1970s.

Being your Yankee brother from the states, I love the Euro Capri too. Which is a rare sight over here. There were some sold here under the Mercury badge but slightly different and choked down with smog crap for American market. My friend Steve bought a used Euro Capri made in Germany that a GI brought back to the States. First time I saw one as a kid, i didn't understand the significance of its relationship to the mustang of which i had several early ones. So here's a little build recipe from your yankee brother. I also love the Triumph spitfires, but always felt they were under powered for the beautiful design. I built a Spitfire on a GT6 Chassis. Installed a European V6 Capri and gearbox. Added wide lettered wheels, full dash Smith Gauges, an early Jag wood steering wheel with a Triumph center cap. On the hood a very very low profile Austin Martin DB style hood scoop. Added a dual high flow exhaust with dual twin tail monza exhaust tips. I almost went with super chargers too but it didn't need it. And made the car appear as if it came from the factory in that configuration. The car was a screaming monster and could lay rubber from 1 to 3. It was the perfect power to weight ratio for the car. It was a Triumph Spitfire Super GT. Someone told me later there was a company here in the states that built a handful of this configuration in a very similar way. Including the Hood scoop. I actually installed a triumph gas cap I found at a swap that had Super GT cast into it in red letters. But anyway. If you want a bad ass concept for a blown up triumph that needs an engine. Try finding a good Capri drivetrain. I only sold it after almost losing my drivers license after accidentally putting on a performance show in front of a cop. Did anybody do this conversion on a spit over there? I forgot to add that the Capri engine was bored over, mild cam, heavier valve springs, balanced and port and polished with Weber carbs. But that's not neccessary to do as the stock configuration of the engine is a bounty of power for the Triumph Spitfire. Those things let it go over 6 thou rpms no problem. Think about the sound. Lamans,,,lol
@furiousdriving4 жыл бұрын
I dont think Ive ever heard of that conversion before (and I work for classic car and hot rod magazines..) The Spitfire with GT6 running gear, so the straight 6 and a 5 speed box from something else is not uncommon, but not the Ford. Nearest thing would be a Reliant Scimitar - glass fibre coupe body with Ford V6 and running gear. That sounds like an great project...once Ive done my Morris Minor with Iprezza WRX running gear Ill move on to that!
@bcabmac4 жыл бұрын
@@furiousdrivingReally? I,m elated! After I built it, the only thing I might of changed was the GT6 Differential. And the flex coupling drive axles. I didn't have any trouble with it, but sometimes you keep wanting to go a step more. The Capri engine I used was out of Connecticut US and had been in an SCCA race car from the 70s. I have pictures of my car somewhere and be happy to share with you. It's been 15 years since I sold it. Have no idea what happened to it. But I would love to see you built another. Its everything I felt a top notch Spitfire could have been and should have been in a dream configuration. Your in for a thrill of a drive. Over here there is plenty of chevy V8s stuffed in them, and rover engines mostly with bulging hoods and chopped up a bit too much. But to me, the Capri engine was a match made in heaven. Please let me know if you do it. Many thanks. Mac

Thankfully by the mid-70s my dad bought a Vauxhall Viva, which had four seats and a better level of comfort. We enjoyed some nice VW Passats after that.....luxury!

So you couldn't adjust the wing mirrors properly? In the 1960's and 70's you had a remote mirror adjusting device, it was called either a girlfriend or a wife!!🤣😂

Gearbox in the 3000E was from the Zodiac, had external linkages and wasn't the best , later 3000GXL and GT face-lift used a better box and the engine gave slightly more power. Beautiful noise from the 3ltr.
@arthurreeder24745 жыл бұрын
Yes it had a tendency to drop out of gear when messing about. Not the best but all that was available I guess? My 3000 E was 4 years old when I bought it and rusting like he'll underneath. When the petrol crisis came in, I couldn't afford to fill the tank up. Petrol went from 10/- a gallon overnight to over £1. Just think of that by today's standards and you can see why no-one wanted one.
@andicog5 жыл бұрын
@@arthurreeder2474 I know the gear lever actually snapped off on my dad's 3000E, his also went rusty early on, at 7 years old it needed a wing and passenger sill for the MOT. Bulkhead sides were flakey as well. Sounded nice and went well, remember him beating all sorts away from the lights. Happy days.

I could also add that it was a swine to start when warm as the auto choke would flood the carburetor. I was shown how to poke the chokes open if it flooded so I could start it. I had my brother hold them open with a screwdriver once and a jet of flame shot out nearly taking his eyebrows off!! Happy days...

Great car and great video. Unfortunately I never drove a Capri, but I did drive a '76 Granada Mk 1 with the same 3L Essex engine and a manual gearbox (not the usual sloggy automatic that comes with those cars). It just drove fantastically.

They were great poor man's cars. We converted one as Cabriolet at our panel shop in 74 just as an experiment and discovered that the chassis held well and solid without a roof. But we still added a couple of stiffening channels under the floor just to make sure it wouldn't break apart. It drove real well too. As you see, it had all you need, a stylish interior for a small, beautiful sports car, even a clock.

When I was about 14 my dad bought a red Cortina 1600E. What a great car! So great everyone wanted to steal them! I gave my dad strict instructions to come home with a Cortina that was exactly the same, but.... He came back with a Capri 2000E instead, aarrrrhhh! 😭 So I spent the next couple of years squashed up in the back. I can still remember the day he changed it for an NSU RO80! What a great car, what a relief 😊.

Some corrections - the MkI Capri ran from 1969 to 1974. In your reference to 1964 you may have become confused by the Consul Capri - a totally different car. In terms of steering wheel adjustability, adjustable reach has been around in British cars since the 1930's, and by the 1950's it was pretty normal in upmarket cars like Wolseley, Riley and Jaguar. Height adjustability was available in the Rover P6 of 1964, and probably others.

Actually I have 2 P6s with height adjustment, should have said on non luxury cars. I totally misread my notes regarding the years, no idea how I got those numbers...

Good video but as usual, the pedant in me can't help correcting you. The Capri was introduced in 1969, not 64. You might be thinking of the short lived Consul Capri which ran from 1961 to 63. It was based on the Cortina Mk11 (you pictured a Mk 1) although it used rack and pinion steering instead of the Cortina's steering box. The first coupé Ford sold in Europe after the Capri was the Probe Mk11 in 1993 which preceded the Cougar, although both cars were flops. Keep uo the good work.

Brother in law had an early 2.8i which he imported from Germany. He used to commute Munich to Stuttgart on the Autobahn at a steady flat-out 130mph. Engine never complained at a limited 6100rpm, but the gearbox eventually started to whine badly. Sounded great.

I had a later 2.8 Injection Capri and had lots of fun in it (some not repeatable!) I bought it as a "cheap run around" when I lost my company car to do my teacher training in the early 1990's. I ran it for a couple of years before the MOT decided it was time to move on as it would have cost more than the car was (then) worth to get it through the test. If only I still had it...

The visible images transmitted by door mirrors are pretty much invisible in peripheral vision. (Therefore, one has to turn one's head to see what is behind.) Hence, why so many modern day drivers change lanes (causing crashes) because their following vehicles were not within the range of their peripheral vision, and they were too lazy to turn the heads to look at their door mirrors...

Best shape of the Capri EVER. I had a 1969 1300 GT capri, which I later had tuned up to a stage 2 rally tuned. Now I look back I wish I'd stiffened the suspension, cos it would of been awesome around corners as well as the straights. I love the colour of this Capri.

I used to deal in the Capri S back in the day. 2.0 and 3.0 .. I had an ad running to buy them in exchange and mart and travelled the UK to buy them. The best seller was 2.0 with Recaro seats, in Red, Black, or an Orangey color( I forget the name) or white. Any silver or gold ones, we’d get it repainted to the best colours as mentioned. But for me , the 3.0 S was the Daddy. Pity I don’t have any pics from them

I wonder if my next door neighbour's son has watched this. This is the car he would have given his right arm for as he had an Aubergine mk1 Capri 1300 XLR as his first car, until it got written off by a plum in a brand new Ford Cortina crashing into the back of it in the snow one winter. It looked pretty much identical to this one having been specified with the X and R option packs on top of the standard L specification...

The Dad of a great friend of mine had a 3000E Capri - yellow with a black vinyl roof. It was 1972 reg if I recall correctly. He persuaded his Dad to lend us the car for a motoring holiday to the South of France, in the summer of 1976. Wonderful motoring on the peages from Le Havre to Geneva and further to St.Tropez, Monaco and St.Raphael. We returned the car (intact). Many high jinks and by God could that car 'pull'.....both in terms of performance and in terms of the ladies. Happy memories of disgraceful indulgence, forbidden pleasures and myriad delights. Oh.....to be young again....I'd do the same....

I started with a Mk 2 1600 Capri ... swapped t in for a 2.0S JPS Special Mk 2 - the one with all the gold lining. Converted it with Competition Spares / Manx Racing Developments for Club Racing. Finally retired it by part-ex'g for a 2.8i Special with limited slip diff. After a fault caused back wheel to snap off - drive shaft sheered, Fords refused to honour warranty ... I had found out that there was a batch of faulty shafts supplied not only to a run of 2.8i's but also the Granada 2.8. After talking with my old pals in racing - they advised to get the earlier non slip diff 2.8i, and I can say with hand on heart - it was a lot better and did not 'tramp' as you powered out in a junction. My real 'want' was to get a Tickford ... but I was young and Insurance was against me !!

The Cortina picture you flashed up was a Mk1. Mk1 Capris ran from 1969-74. The 3 litre would always have been an Essex as the Cologne was never produced in that size. Lesser UK variants would have had the Kent crossflow engines or the V4 Essex. Facelift Mk1s saw the Pinto engine replace the Kent engines as a option.
