1970 Ford Maverick Grabber Junkyard Find. Well look at what we have here, none other than a freaking Ford Maverick. And i do believe this one might be a real deal Grabber. Yea i know it was mostly an appearance package, but still cool non the less. This being the first year, it was a 4 lug, 6 cylinder car. She also was a factory non air conditioning, manual drum brake and manual steering car. Kinda bare bones. But there seem to be some clues that suggest it might be a grabber. Also there is a short clip at the beginning of the video showing the few tools I found while there.

That VIM trim tool looks a lot like a Wilde product. Wilde makes the "P" code product for Sears Craftsman (or did for years). The rest are good finds. I would have checked that "1/2" of a pliers. Sometimes it's a branded one where there's a warranty. I found a Husky pliers on the highway, went right back to HD and got a new one. Here we go, VIN is 0 for 1970 model year, K for Kansas City, KS assembly plant, 91 for Maverick two door sedan, T for straight six 200 CID engine, and the rest is the production sequence. Yes mostly a trim package in 1970, although it was fitted with larger tires according to what I read. 1971 and 1972 would have the hood you're talking about. I think it was a Grabber originally, I guess we would have to see the trim tag in the driver's door to verify, but that door looks like it has seen better days, along with the rest of this one. Time to put the "bull" out to pasture. No V8 in 1970, you could only get a 170 or 200 CID six cylinder as others may have also stated.

My first grade teacher had one exactly like it. Same color. You can tell this one is a true 1970 and not a 1969-1/2 because of the more modern door armrests. I do not believe bucket seats were available until the 1971 model year.

Mavericks were overlooked for Mustangs by Ford fans, and only lately are getting attention. But for many years, "muscle car purists" didn't want them, so many were scrapped.

You always brighten my day. I have wanted one of these since I was five or six and had the Johan model of the first year mav. I was a kid and I beat the hell out of that thing but it looked better than this. I believe this shares parts with the pinto and the taillamps are identical. Yes they run 70 to 77, replaced by the (omg) Fairmont. From swoopy donk to flat panel box. The only exciting Fairmont was the futura with the "crown Victoria" basket handle roof. Check out the Louisiana car guys who bought a grabber and pimped it out. They cut up the donor Maverick sedan which came with it. I prefer sedans. Whatever.

There's this dude whose channel is Lunar Outlaw Garage. He is actually restoring a 72 Plymouth 318 Satellite with floorboards worse than this. Sure it won't be worth it, but I have to hand it to him for trying. In his last video he actually welded in a new cross-member and his work looks pretty good. It goes to show that while 99% of people won't do it, it can still be done.

Sadly they don’t make floor pans anymore. My dad gifted me a 71 grabber but we started to restore it but money and time is something we never so it sat in garage for a year we got the cowl off to see it was to far gone and the floors were patched poorly with rivets holding it together with wood in the torque boxes It was nice 5 lug disc brake but getting rid of it this weekend to hopefully find a better one . All 6 cylinder models were four lug. V-8's were five lug. You are right about the rear spoiler and fender extensions. The first Grabbers didn't have the fake hood scoops. It was painted matte black, as was the panel in back where the tailght housings were. You could tell the matte paint was completely gone. Neat radio. No V-8 Mavericks till 72. The Mercury Comet which came out in 1971 you could get a V-8. My friend Phil had a 72 Grabber V-8, bucket seat, PS, Power disc brakes. It was yellow like that one in the video but the previous owner had painted it black. Beautiful little, fast car. Burned in a fire he replaced it with a 70 base 6 cylinder bench seat Maverick. What a difference. The next month I found him a 1971 Mercury Comet GT. Unique hood for Comet GT's. 302 V-8, Bucket seat, power steering, brakes, disc of course and this one had factory A/C. Nice medium green metallic exterior with black interior. Fantastic car. He totalled it when he hit a parked car after falling asleep on the road. I took the burned out Grabber and pulled the motor, wiring, windshield and did a transplant. I used the burned out Macerick because the Comet was hit so hard it pushed the A post back three inches and that unibody was tweaked. Got it running and everything hooked up. The only problem i had had was when I closed the door I couldn't get the dome light to turn off. Being young and dumb, our first test drive went something like this. Place an unsecured hood on top of the engine. Proceed to drive down the street. To make this look really great, make sure every single person who lives on the street just happens to be outside to witness two dummies. Step on the gas real hard and watch the hood become a flying saucer. Watch as it lifts up into the air like a piece of paper and see it barely miss coming through the unsecured windshield. It hit about two inches over the windshield bounced off the roof and went skidding down the street.. The two said geniuses get out of the car in shame and with red faces go and collect said hood and leave all while our neighbors see us like they've never seen us before or since. Of course it's funny now but truly embarrassing at the time. That was the end of the Maverick and the Comet. Both were picked up by the wrecking yard and hauled away. About a year later I saw the black Maverick Grabber in a Pick A Part minus the 302. It did have the key in the ignition, so I took it as a souvenir. My preference goes to the Comet front end and tail light treatment. Mercury knew how to do a front end that just looked good. The Maverick was just basic looking and shared taillights with the Pinto.

@@Thirdgen83 Thanks for the correction. I totally forgot about that. Both of my 1972 Pintos had disc brakes up front. I don't even remember my friends Maverick or Comet not having power brakes. But then again these cars were so light they do need it. My aunt had a 1973 Ford Gran Torino with no power brakes from the factory. I could definitely tell with that car, because I had a 72 Mercury Montego MX with power brakes and her car took a bit more effort to stop then the Montego.

Here's the difference between a Maverick and a Nova. If that had been a Nova I could see a lot more comments where most of them basically saying how it could and should be saved. The car itself probly would have been picked more clean. For its intended purpose I don't know who made the better car in this price range be at GM or Ford. However for just plain style you gotta hand it to Chevy hands down.

4:35 That chassis is rusted clear through to the interior -- I don't think this one is salvageable. You can literally see the headliner of the car by looking under it -- the car would likely break in half in excess of 30 miles an hour. Restoring a Maverick is a money pit, they aren't worth the investment.... especially as rough as this one is.

I gotta be honest here... I'd have left that one sitting where it was. Just too much rust and too much missing. I used to own a 1970 Mercury Comet GT that was the same color. Pretty much the same car, for that matter. It had a 302 and an automatic. I also owned a '74 Grabber in the late '80s. Also a 302, but a 3 speed manual. Still see Mavericks on the road around here every great now and then, but they're rare. ( I live in TN, btw. )

@@ClassicRideSociety, the thing that strikes me as odd about that car is that with all the rust everywhere else, there's none on the rear quarter panels, behind the rear wheel. Most of the ones here in Tn almost always need that area repaired. They're good everywhere else, but those spots go quick. With my old Comet, you didn't dare put anything small in the trunk before it was fixed, or it'd end up out on the road. lol

@@ClassicRideSociety, yeah, the salty air gets into places road salt can't. Tn didn't use a lot of salt back then, so most cars survived much better than the ones up north. The problem with the Maverick is that just like the Mustang, it was built on a 1960 Falcon chassis....and they were notorious for rust. I wouldn't be surprised if that was a Texas car--even in a dry environment they rusted. I'm sure the torque boxes were rotted away
