Pure stock rules (last time I looked) allowed an increase in compression ratio, so you don't know if this is still a low compression motor or not. That said, I'm sure that back in the day there were more or less stock GS's that would outrun a lot of Hemi cars - not all for sure, but a significant percentage of them. My own 67 Hemi ran low 13's stock, with 3.23 gears. My lightly modified 340 Barracuda with the same rear gears would run even with it. Of course, the fact that it was 800 lbs lighter helped.

For me, this was one race I couldn't choose sides. It's like having to pick just one kid to favor. All I've owned & built were Buick's & Mopar's since I started driving in '82. As far as I know, this has been Only 1 'truly equal' head-to-head match up of these 2 road terrors; and that was in 2003 at Byron Dragway.The Buick was a stock Stage1 455 w/Turbo 400 Q-jet w/strip kit (allowed since the Cuda had dual quads) and Dextron trans fluid. Engine was blueprinted, cam & crank degreed for true TDC, 10W30 Valvoline NSL oil & Amziol 75W140 diff lube. The Cuda was a stock 426 HEMI, 727 HEMI Torqueflite (std 727 - 3/4 clutches, Magnum 4/4 & HEMI 5/4) running Trickshift trans fluid. Engine was blueprinted, cam & crank degreed for true TDC, Mobil 1 15W-50 oil & Lucas 80W-90 gear oil. Both cars had 4.10 gear & were running 110 octane pump gas (leaded), true factory duals (no crossovers) & Heartthrob 2.5 " center IN/OUT mufflers. Both cars were tuned up at 4500rpm. The Buick was fully loaded with options while the Cuda only had PB, manual windows & No A/C. The Buick ran all 3 belts while the Cuda ran only 1. Both cars were driven by 2 other drivers. After the 1st run, they switched and ran again. Both times, the GS won, 12.07 & 12.16 @ 115mph and change. Buick's also had another Real big advantage, and that was ins premiums. ALL Buick's were insured as the base Regal with 350 V8. The GS was an option pkg and so were the motors unlike every other make at the time. I know because I had a 69 GS and my ins was the same as my aunt who had a 71 Regal 4dr sedan w/350 2bbl and my 73 455 Stage 1 Centurion was the same as my 71 LeSabre 2dr hardtop w/350 4BBL. All the other muscle cars of the era were 2 to 3X as much. It was even the same for the 80's GN's & GNX's. They were insured as a pedestrian Regal w/231 V6 2bbl or throttle body.
@donhearn2248 Жыл бұрын
What is funny is that has not changed. I was looking at a 69 Impala 350 and a 70 Wildcat 455, the Buick had the cheaper insurance....I ended up buying the Wildcat.

Didn't get my notification for this vid, and sucks when Y-tube does that crap. Those Hemi Cuda's are badass and agree, as they are my top choice for hottest muscle car of the era as well. Although I have to narrow it down a bit and is actually the 71 model year that I like best, with those cool gills in the front 1/4s & grill. Although the 70 AARs are totally sick to, and also really like the look. Ronnie Sox & Dick Landy ruled the strips across the country, and were kings of the blacktop. Dick started with Plymouth and then switch to Dodge, but Ronnie had great success with the Plymouth (A/FX cars) factory experimental Mopars and we're badass dude's with lot's a class 💪🏼😎 💪🏼😎. BTW, love the Mopar content and please keep em rolling bud 👊🏼

What a difference a year makes. Compression ratio of 10.2 Cuda to 8.5 for the Buick. Surprised the Buick ran that quick.
@livewire27594 жыл бұрын
Compression is overrated. Cylinder head flow makes a much bigger difference than compression does. You can build an engine with 13 to 1 compression and the biggest cam you can find, but if you don't have a good set of heads, you're wasting time and money. I've always been surprised at how well those Buick heads flowed, especially compared to Hemi heads that were designed to flow a ton of air as efficiently as possible.
@martyharless50974 жыл бұрын
@@livewire2759 the compression ratio can make a big difference in performance. I had a 71 GS 455 with low compression and positraction rear. A friend had the 1970 GS 455 with higher compression without positraction. Obviously I could take him off the line but starting from 30 miles an hour he easily walked away from me. Cylinder heads can make a big difference but so can a compression ratio.
@livewire27594 жыл бұрын
@@martyharless5097 Sure, compression makes some difference, my point is that heads make a much bigger difference than compression. If you start with a low compression stock engine, raising the compression will make more power, but keeping the compression the same and bolting on high flowing aftermarket heads with a camshaft to match them will make a MUCH bigger difference, and if you raise compression on it AFTER bolting on better heads and a big cam, it will still make only a little difference. It's the same thing with headers. If you bolt headers on a stock engine, you will gain some power, but if you build a racing engine and put manifolds on it, then switch to headers, you will notice a much bigger gain.
@martyharless50974 жыл бұрын
@@livewire2759 better flowing heads and more aggressive cam, yes but better flowing heads alone maybe not so much unless the original heads were garbage. I understand your point
@paulallison66894 жыл бұрын
@Boneseyy L The Buick wasn't runnin' the '71 stock compression of 8.5 though...it was bumped up ta 10:1 (stated @6:50-6:55 in the video).

The Buick racing in this video is a 1971? It has vent windows which were last used in 1968.

Looking at the Plymouth chart at 45 sec. Does anyone know the difference between the 383, 330 & 335 HP engines?

The 225 and 318 were not available with the Cuda. Which obviously is what the video has focused on, not the regular barracuda.

The 4:10 gears got it for the Cuda.
@VegasRT5003 жыл бұрын
Not really. Look at the higher MPH through the trap the Cuda has. It is just the design of the Hemi engine. It had the best cylinder heads and they still run a version of the Hemi cylinder head in Top Fuel.
@hiitsstillme4 жыл бұрын
Both great cars. We see more of a battle of drivers, than cars. The 'Cuda left first, so the Buick lost it right there. Too bad he missed that much needed jump at the lights to take advantage of the superior torque that Buicks are famous for.

Part of the weight deal is the motor. Buick is a lot like olds. big heavy long stroke crank but the block and head castings a plenty like...455 olds block is a few pounds lighter than a 327/350 block a the heads are about the same.
