I don't know why but I have a soft spot for the so called "Wedge Era", an automotive period that started from the late 1960s when car's design moved away from the curved and soft lines for a more sharpened and defined style.
If the production cars reflected this philosophy (like the BMW M1, Lamborghini Countach or the Lotus Esprit for example), concept cars took this design to the extreme. And the Stratos HF Zero is one of the most striking examples. Born in 1970, the initial concept behind the Zero for Bertone's design team was simply to see how low a car they could built (in those years there was a great rivalry between car designer, especially between Bertone and Pininfarina, who a few months ago unveiled their 93.5 cm tall Pininfarina Modulo). The Stratos was designed by Marcello Gandini to be 84 cm (33 inches) from the ground!
The name would be used on Lancia's rally-going car a few years later, but this concept had little to do with that. It's powered by a Lancia "Type 818.540" engine (1.6-liter V4 13°, with 115hp) taken from a Lancia Fulvia HF. Everything else looks like something coming directly from a 70s science fiction film and be inspired by space (remember that a year before there was the Apollo 11 mission): the steering wheel was made in order to resemble the planet Saturn, driving position was as horizontal and as close to the ground as it could possibly be so the driver had nothing but the road in front of him and the sky above him, a futuristic instrument panel offset to the side behind the front wheel-arch and rear-view mirrors sunk inside the side scallops allowed for somewhat limited rear vision.
In 1988 a replica of this car was built for Michael Jackson's film "Moonwalker".
I was able to record this unique car during the 2018 Concorso d'Eleganza of Villa D'Este in Cernobbio so now you can see many angles and detailed shots of it, hear the sound of the narrow angle V4 and see it moving around. Hope you like the video!

This is by far my favorite concept car of all time. As a student at Art Center College of Design in the 80's, I tried to come up with my own exotic design that could compare. I failed. This shall remain one of the most iconic designs ever. Thank you for submitting this awesome video

To those complaining about the engine sound, keep in mind that most Italian sport cars of the era had carbs and were tuned for high rpms and speed, so when at idle or low speeds they often sound like they are going to shut off or very rough...

This is a true automotive art. It really feels like a look into the future. The future that never happened. Surely, there was a share of "wedge"-shaped cars in around mid 80s (15 years after), but nothing as fantastic. Also it reminds me of a vehicle from Black Moon Rising movie, but it wasn't as elegant.

When I was in high school (2004-2005), I had shop class. One of our projects was to design a car on this old computer. The idea was to draw up something with low drag and enough power to get you so far so fast. Anyway, I ended up creating a wedge-type car. I had no idea this thing existed, but my 17 year old self designed the same thing. lmao.

Hi Bozzy. Thank you for such an in-depth look at this amazing piece of rolling art. What a great concept! Just like you, that extreme wedge design really captivates me as well. This thing has so many cool design elements, the huge front glass "door", those side windows, and my favorite piece, the rear triangular, vented engine cover. The steering wheel looks similar to what is found on a bumper car. haha. I wouldn't want to be a crash test dummy in that thing. ;o) At only 33" tall and razor sharp wedge shaped, I wonder what the cd is for this car? The modern solar panel racers are like the modern-day equivalent (design-wise). Fantastic piece of automotive history that automatically steals the show wherever it goes, which is crazy considering it is as old as I am. Thanks for taking the time to share this car with us and for your great description of it as well. Take care my friend!

Quite different designs. And this would look f**kin' TERRIBLE in pink!!! The copper colour suits the futurisitc look and also shows off the curves, which is really imoprtant with such a radical and distinctive shape as this.

Marcello Gandini designed almost every Lamborghini from the late '60s right through to the early '90s - and he also designed this Stratos Zero concept. Lambo's 'design language' to this day still strongly reflects the general style and shape begun by Gandini with the Miura, the Countach, etc... right through to the Diablo that replaced the Countach. One of the greatest Italian designers ever. He's also designed all sort of other things, not just cars - and he's STILL working today! He's now in his 70s at least. He hasn't been so interested in car design since the late '90s onward though. His last production road car design, (rather than just a prototpye or design model) was the Maserati Quattroporte III, 4 door sedan, of the mid '90s - early 2000s. If you look at it in profile, you can see it too is actually a quite a 'wedgy' shape. Low at the nose , very high at the rear, with virtually a straight line from nose - to window line - to tail. It also has his signature diagonal 'kick-up' line over the rear weel arches - just like the orginal Countach, (before it got the big wheel arch extensions later on) and a few of his other old designs. The top model had a V6 with twin turbo - for what is a fairly compact sedan. Not slow! A guy in England made a very accurate, road legal, replica of this Stratos Zero show car. Back in the 2000s. He found out that there were actually 3 Stratos Zero replica moulds made for the Michael Jackson Moonwalker movie, not just one. I think they just had a very basic frame inside to hold them together, the car in the video is only seen for about 40 seconds - and never close up. He managed to find one of those old replica moulds and buy it via an online auction. For all the suspension, seats, engine, frame , etc etc - he used a FIAT X1/9 coupe, (another great wedge car designed by Gandini! How appropriate) as a donor car. So: a 1.5 with 4 cyl., 5 speed box, rack & pinion steering, disc brakes all round. He didn't need to modify much from the donor X1/9 but the front suspension had to be shortened. It's road legal and he can drive it - but he did mention that for a while he ended up having to wear a special back brace because getting in and out was so awkward and gave his back/spine a hard time. He made the side windows 30 cm. longer at their rearward end, so visibility to the sides is slightly better than the original prototype. He also installed a monitor in the cabin for a rear view camera for reversing, so that's also an impovement! He said, inevitably, that people would stare at the car wherever he went. P.S. For some of the commenters: - Yeah, it's just a 1.6 V4 - but that Lancia engine is a classic - and this is a VERY compact car - and VERY light too! Sure, it sounds rough in this video - but lots of hyper rare cars like this are rarely , or even never, driven unless they are being taken to a show. I wish more owners of cars like this would look after their engines properly - or at least let them warm up thoroughly before driving and parking for display. I'd guess that some just buy them for looks, rarity and value while engine maintenance and health is just an afterthought. - The "Pink Panther car" is not this car - and is quite different. Not to mention that it's pink! - The Lancia Stratos rally car, (although also designed by Gandini) was quite a different car - and had a Ferrari V6. This car, the Stratos Zero, has a V4 as used in the Lancia Fulvia sedan and coupe. - The U.F.O tv series car was VERY different and much bigger, (and was based on top of a Ford Escort, as I recall reading). - The Vector supecar is also a very different car and much bigger. - The Nissan Dome Zero of 1978 was a completely different car too - but yes, was an obvious tribute, (or rip-off, depending on your point of view). Yes, I'm a classic car and car design geek - and I love Gandini designs! Long may he live and continue designing wonderful things.
