Back in the day when we had only three choices. ( Glasspacks, turbo or straight pipes) I fitted my 70 mach 1, M code Cleveland with medium duty stainless diesel mufflers. To this day she has the most unique sound and would never change it. Mellow at cruise then sounds like a flat plane cranked V-8 above 4500 rpm's.

Hey Michael, what Thrush mufflers did you go with? I was considering them too. Thanks!
@mjbachman30273 жыл бұрын
@@robertclymer6948 I don't remember. It was 1974. The following year I added exhaust pipes aft of the Thrush mufflers and the stock chrome exhaust tips, as it was excessively loud without them for the street and the university parking structures .I also had new door shins installed, and had the whole car repainted. I didn't put back the plastic honeycomb panel between the taillights though. Instead I had the paint shop paint it black like a Boss 302. I had them install new Mach 1 numerals on the deck lid. It was painted medium metallic blue. I would love to get another 1970 Mach 1.

Sounds like my old Mach 1 that sported a 351C-4V. I own a '70 428 CJ Mach 1 with Flowmasters and despite the difference displacements, it too sounds a lot like this one - just a little lower pitch. I love the Flowmasters - not too loud even wit headers but still a LOT of power.
@rona.40636 жыл бұрын
So lucky. . . POWER you do have! I'm glad that my 351C-4V sounds similar to your 428 CJ which just means both our Flowmaster muffler systems are spot on. I wished though I had a 428CJ underneath the hood!!!
@428CJ706 жыл бұрын
@@rona.4063 You can bore and stroke that 351C-4V to 408 CID. Not only will that extra stroke and displacement seriously help your torque and horsepower, it will also better consume those huge valves and ports you have which will increase low RPM torque even further. Add a lively retrofit hydraulic roller cam, a 750+ cfm carb and headers if you don't already have them. Finally, I don't remember your transmission but if its an auto, then you could go to a 2400 RPM stall speed converter and the cam will cause the motor to rev so quickly in normal driving you won't notice the stall until you stomp it. Then you'd better have a traction lock rear end or a Detroit Locker. I pulled my C6 and installed a beefed up 4R70W transmission retrofitted with a big block bell housing so I could get overdrive to go with my 3.91 gears. Those gears are awful on the interstate w/o overdrive. It's pretty easy to get a 408 CID Cleveland to 500HP and still be civilized enough to drive in on the street. I bored and stroked my 428 to 469 CID. If you do stroke your motor, be sure to use a forged steel crank and forged steel H beam rods. I oped to get the high grade version because I don't want to risk my original engine. If I still had my first car - '71 Mach 1 351C-4V, I would do the things I suggested. As it is, I did all that to my 428CJ except I got a solid roller because, at the time, no one was selling a hydraulic roller retro kit for the CJ.

Wow. Looks like you've done a lot with your Mach1 already. That's more than I could ever imagine on trying to get my pony to run much faster. For a while, my Mach1 just stayed in my garage for 6 years until recently, I started working on it, getting it back to running condition. Thank you for your great advice and insight. Your suggestions are definitely noteworthy not just for me but for those considering to improve the performance of their Mach1s (if it hasn't already been worked on). I do want to share that I have taken out Ford's factory power steering unit and converted it to an electric power steering which in my opinion, the handling became so much better. I'm also not having to worry about the notorious fluid leaks LOL.
@428CJ706 жыл бұрын
@@rona.4063 I kept my original power steering unit. A lot of people swap it out with the power steering unit from the '71-'73 Mach 1's. That unit supposedly handles much better. This biggest complaint about the original unit is that it provides too much assist and you don't feel the road as much. The pulley for the 428 is a different size and uses less power from the engine - and privies less assist. It's ironic because the 428 is nearly 100 pounds heavier in stock configuration. But driving a modern car and then driving my Mach, I really don't notice that much difference. My front end was fully restored and my mechanic tinkered with the PS a lot to get it to drive the way it does. I really don't know the details of what he did. The steering in my brother's old '69 Mach was much more mushy and had very little feedback from the road. I don't know if it was just wore out or if it was because it used the standard size PS pulley. But yeah, I've done a lot to my Mach. Because of its displacement (469 CID) it idles pretty well at 800 RPMs despite the solid roller cam and bigger valves. And its crazy fast. If I listed everything I have done to it, it would be a very long post. Except for the headers, it looks stock and its idle sounds close to stock. But even with an automatic transmission, it can spin its Firestone 295-50-15 radials at any speed, in any gear - except overdrive. I have the transmission controller set to automatically disable overdrive whenever the throttle is 50% or more. I have never used nitrous oxide. It would have been far cheaper but from my hot rod days in the 70's and 80's. I can't get the old saying out of my head, "bottles are for babies". Today, most hot rods use superchargers. At least then, the power is always there.

We build custom mandrel exhaust. We have a FlowMaster pile out back. People run them 3,000 miles and literally throw them away. They hate the raspy sound and the droning. They go to Dynamax "Super Turbos", Magnaflow, or sometimes glasspacks. We have pulled them off all types of cars. We have also done back to back tests on Mopar 440 with Magnaflow and instantly lost 60 hp on the chassis dyno with 40s.

SOUNDS BETTER BEFORE YOU CHANGED THE MUFFLERS ,MORE OF A THROATY SOUND RATHER THAN A NOTHING SOUND ?
@rona.40635 жыл бұрын
I truly appreciate everyones comments. I'm just amaze by your observations which I truly can comprehend and in some ways has me contemplating whether I made the right decision. I personally picked the flowmaster because of having been influenced by various you tube videos showcasing the same type of muffler. I decided to make my own video to return the favor and perhaps help others decide. So, I truly want to be honest here. I pretty much prefer the throaty sound but is it enough for me; I think not. I'm beginning to think of whether I should have gone with the next louder flowmaster. I'm thinking of upgrading but for now, I'll just wait a little bit longer and who knows, I might just change my mind once again.
