1970 Mercedes-Benz 280 SEL w108 the restrained elegance

In August 1965, another generation of top-class models was presented with the Types 250 S, 250 SE, and 300 SE, which succeeded the fintail types 220 Sb, 220 SEb, and 300 SE. What all three models had in common was its body, which had been designed by Paul Bracq. Its main charm was the simplicity of form, which avoided all fashionable detail, and its restrained elegance, which even today, kept its timeless essence. The new 2.8-liter 6-cylinder engine delivered 140 hp in its carburetor version and 160 hp with fuel injection. A more powerful version of the injection engine with 170 hp was not only built into the 280 SL but from January 1968 into the 300 SEL, too, where it replaced the former 3.0-liter light-alloy engine. Production of the very successful W 108/109 series ended in September 1972. It was succeeded by the 116 series S-Class models.

My parents bought a new 1971 280SEL right after I was born. Theirs was dunkelblau in color also, but had cognac interior. Man, I'd love to have that car today!

Awesome, classic elegance,very distinguished, you don*t see that type of elegance, distinguished look, with the cars now, they are just cars, from a viewpoint, before, when you mentioned Mercedes Benz, it was known for that grille, the three point star, inserted in the grille housing all the chrome work, it had that special touch added, making it super special, then you had the 600 series reserved for dignitaries,& important people, then the custom built 600 which had air suspension, a partition air conditioning, for the back people if you had the partition, a telephone usually to tell the chauffeur where to go , plus some more ammenities.and if it was a dignitaries car it would normally have a place where to put the countries flag.

The 300 SEL was introduced in September 1965, not 1966. For 1968, 300 SEL received smaller all-new M 130.981 2.8-litre engine while oddly retaining the model name, 300 SEL. Is there any reason why Mercedes-Benz fuddles up on defining W108 and W109 as well as retaining the model name, 300 SEL, from 1968 to 1970 despite the smaller engine? Initially, W108 was designated as standard wheelbase with smaller 2.8-litre engine, steel suspension, and spartan appointments while W109 as long wheelbase with larger 3-litre engine, air suspension, and luxury appointments. Then, 280 SEL (still designaged as W108) came in 1968 and made things more confusing. Also, what does "b" in 300 SEb stand for? Thanks.

In this case, the suffix "b" serves to distinguish this model from 300 SEL, which had an elongated wheelbase and air suspension and belonged to the type W109. But really, in those years there was a lot of confusion in the designation of models :).
