OH BOY lets shoot back to the 1970s, where housewives all across America didn't have Facebook or a subreddit -- but submitted their tips and tricks to this anthology of sorts!!!!!!!!! I love reading through ~vintage~ material to see how different and similar things were for generations past. It's interesting to see how what we learn nowadays is coming from pretty strong roots. (Not a single mention of house husbands or non-heterosexual couples, as if those simply did not exist just a few decades ago.... :-)) I'm glad to see things have changed but it's clear with this only being a few generations before us now, I'm sure there's many ways to go! When our kids and grandkids look back on the 2020s, I hope we have come even farther by then!
Anyway, aside from the social differences, it was really funny to read the tips and tricks. It was mostly "use this object as a different object". or "tricks" that to me were really....really self explanatory LOL. But entertaining to read nonetheless!!! I hope you enjoy!! I've gotten a LOT more requests recently to read from books, etc.; so I figgggured I'd be pretty safe copyrightwise with this one!
If any of your viewers grew up in the 1970s, I'd love to hear your thoughts in the comment section!! Is this book accurate to your experience of expectations from your mothers or yourself?
Sleep well, little housewives!!!!!! You have a LONG DAY ahead of you tomorrow!!!!!!!!!!!! !! ! !

There’s free time when you have kids. It’s just sporadic as with everything. At first, it’s when they nap. You can also take turns with your partner. Time with kids can be free time too-playing, reading. And then, all of a sudden, they’re older and doing they’re own thing a lot. Treasure the moments together, no matter the age. Put the camera or screens down sometimes and just live. BTW, I’m a child of the 70s. My mom stayed home until I was 10 before working part time. Before that, she taught violin lessons at home. She was incredible. She cooked, cleaned, did laundry, took care of my siblings and me (and definitely did the index card thing-addresses, recipes, vinyl records). My dad was great too. He worked all week, fixed up the house on the weekends, mowed the lawn, kicked the soccer ball with us. It seemed like the era of use more, repair more, throw out less. Feels like yesterday and a million years ago at the same time. I doubt you’ll see this since it’s way after posting and is among a thousand other comments, but if you do, thanks for the look back in time. Oh, and your mom’s earrings and grandma’s dress are groovy. You just need an avocado-colored fridge, some shag carpeting, and Ben in a wash-and-wear shirt with a big collar and a wide polyester tie (and no beard, of course-just the ‘stache).

@rex-racer
@rex-racer 3 жыл бұрын
@@nekopoptart Good question. Wash ‘n Wear was a phrase used for clothes that needed little or no ironing, which was a big trend for men’s dress shirts that started in the 60s and especially the 70s with synthetic fabrics (like polyester) blended with, or replacing, the natural fabrics (like cotton).

I’m a stay at home mom with a 2 year old and 1 month old. Yes, Gibi these 70’s mothers are not lying when they say they may only have 30 min to themselves. I don’t even have that right now haha! 😂 This book has some genuinely good advice though. I’ve never been choked up by an ASMR video before but the lines“someday the house will be too neat when the kids are gone,” and “your best memories will never be of a perfectly clean home” got me emotional over here 😭

I always found the 1920’s-1970’s fascinating. Even though there were a lot more stereotypes and everything was incredibly gendered and heterosexual only, it’s still very interesting to learn how these people lived in those times, and what it was like back then compared to today. And as always this was very relaxing and incredibly fascinating!

My first and last children are 20 years apart, with one in the middle (well, much closer to the first). Free time can be tough in the beginning but I find that many women tend to apologize for taking time for themselves. I never did. I always at least took the time to sit with a cup of coffee and book to read for about a half hour to an hour, whenever it fit in best, depending upon the age and schedule of the child.

Your free time definitely goes away with kids, but not in a bad way. It goes from pretty unproductive time, to spending it with your favorite little people ever, that make you laugh and smile all day long. There is nothing better than being a dad, in my humble opinion. And once they're old enough, you get your hobbies back because it's what they'll be into hahaha 😂

Regarding free time with kids: My daughter (just turned 2) has a 2 hour nap after lunch then goes to bed at 6:30. So my wife and I plan our free time around that. But also super important to involve your kids in your hobbies I think! But yes it is more difficult to just take off for the day or whatever you used to do. More planning is needed 👍🏻

Being a parent comment: I have 2 (12 and 9) when they were little yes it’s a lot at first. You go from you focus to child focus and it’s an adjustment. But as they get older you find the “you focus” is able to come back more and more and it gets a lot easier! And like a million moms before me have said “the days are long but the years are short “ I would give anything to go back in time and hold my babies and toddles one more time (when you’re in it, it all seems never ending lol) but same time having older kids is amazing! You have people now who can take care of themselves and you can do so many fun and awry things with them. 😊

The thing about kids is that you have to get them included in what you like to do. So it feels like you still have time to do what you want, just with a tiny little person that makes (almost) everything better. But also make sure to take time for yourself to be alone. I have an almost 2 year old and since she could stand up I've had her helping me with laundry/cleaning because keeping the house clean is important to me. But, she also sits and reads with me because I love to read. And I make sure to wake up earlier in the morning to have time to drink a cup of coffee and read before she wakes up because that's important to me. Kids are so much more work than you can imagine, but really do bring so much joy to every single thing they do.

Things get easier with kids as they get older, but it sounds like you have a partner who helps out a lot, and that is a huge deal. If you can afford someone to come in and clean occasionally, even just to do the bathrooms, that helps a lot. I am a big reader, and I kept that up even when my son was an infant - I just read easier books (because I was so tired) while I was pumping and feeding my son. Returning to work after my son was born was also when I started drinking coffee. But he's five now, and I have a full time job, but I still have time for hobbies. I will say, my sister is a SAHM and her job seems much harder than the job I currently have, which is in an office.

I remember my mother calling my aunt or my grandmother almost daily when I was a kid. I wish it was the same now that I’m a mother. Everyone always just texts. It doesn’t fill that communication meter for me personally. But we’re a military family and I have a few other mom friends and when our kids have been crazy all day we will meet at a park and talk. It’s refreshing for me. Now I do, do most the house work. My husband is gone a lot though so when he’s home after a 14 hour day I don’t ask for things. Unless I’m the weekend. Or to take the trash out. That’s his job, taking the trash out 😂

I don't think the women realise who valuable and scientifically accurate this content is. I'm hearing Stoicism "Focus on what you can control" Daoism "A little bit of dirty is good for you, dont overstress on being clean" even tips on managing your Dopamine " Do the most dreaded tasks first, and schedule the hardest tasks with the times of day you have the most energy". AND meditation in there "Go for a walk every now and then, clear your mind". This is brilliant stuff, as humans we know how to be our very best, its instinctive.

SAHM of 3 with #4 on the way... It's tough but rewarding to be able to watch your kids grow but it can be lonely as your alone time is GONE! Unless you have a husband who helps give you alone time... mine Is at night when everybody's sleeping but I'm also a night owl and as humorous as this book it's interesting

I use it too for my grandparents, but I have German ancestry too. I know quite a few other people who use it as well and they do not so I feel it's becoming more common in America.

You don't need to explain that the 70s were a different era, Gibi. That book is nearly half a century old! We understand that it was meant for a woman in a nuclear family, don't worry. Either way, the tips for homemaking are useful weather you fit that profile or not :) Edit: Oh, you said the same thing right after I finished writing this and went back to the video, LOL! "Great minds think alike"? 🤭

Parent here. Came to say it's harder than people make it look. Having my daughter made me a different person. I thought I'd just be myself, but I'd have more stuff to do, like changing the baby and feeding her and stuff. What I didn't expect was that I wouldn't feel like myself, that I would have PPD and PTSD, that I would work harder than I had ever worked in my life and that I would never stop thinking about her, where she is, what she needs, what she's doing, and how to guide her to grow into the person I want her to become. I think the show that best showcases the real feelings of having a new baby is The Let Down on Netflix, but I have yet to see anything that I think represents the feeling of having school-aged children very accurately. Maybe it's because once the kids start having personalities, the experience is much more varied.
