I'm born in Amsterdam almost 70 years ago, and lived there for 60 years. Then I became fed up with the crowds, the noise and the pollution. When I see the calm and politeness in this clip I long back for that period.

I was born in Vancouver, Canada ‘64 but moved to Bussum in 1970 for 6 yrs with moeder and brother. We ended up going back to Canada. My mother was a Holocaust survivor and came to Canada after the war and had me quite late in life. She passed in 2010. This video makes me feel like I'm back in Holland. Bitter sweet.

I went to Amsterdam in late 2001 for NYE just before they got the Euro, anyway I went with a couple of people I didn't really like... we went to a 'coffee house' and before you could say toke on this I was as high as a stoat... I suddenly realized who I was with and started to go white... luckily I didn't vom but I was close, anyway we ended up in a restaurant for something to sate our munchies and before long I made my excuses and just left... I walked through the snow to the red-light district and I came across one of those adult walk-in video booths... literally... anyway after I'd finished flogging the dolphin ( still as high as a goose ) I decided to walk back to the hostel where I met some lovely American girls who took me under their wing and I had a great time after that, ended up sleeping with a big boobed German girl and I saw in 2002 as a new man... the next day under the 'Euro' everything was chaos... bought a Mars bar from a news agent for 17 Euros... well cheap... who cares.

Judith’s pronunciations (e.g. Leidseplein) suggest she didn’t speak to any Dutch people. Interesting that this is just before the UK joined the EU, and it’s clear the audience isn’t expected to know much about the city/the Dutch. No brown cafes left… but the genever tasting bar still exists.

Amazingly sanitised report from the 'posh' Judith Chalmers. No mention of Amsterdam''s realities, such as the Red Light district with its thousands of prostitutes, drunk tourists and sex clubs where anything goes. No mention of the low life tourists attracted to come here solely for the sex industry and the drugs, most of whom are not a pleasure to encounter. A trip to Amsterdam today is a world away from the rose-tinted and stage-managed spectacle that Chalmers presents us with here.

Can you recommend locations in The Netherlands that are more like the postcards and travel programmes?
@perolagrande
@perolagrande 2 жыл бұрын
@@jasonayres Yes indeed, thanks for your question. Haarlem is a beautiful city close to Amsterdam to walk around in with quaint little streets and lots of unique, individual stores (not part of large chains) and tons of history. Further south, Delft is a charming town that resembles a mini Amsterdam, as it has lots of canals and quaint old buildings. Leiden, the University city, is also charming and built on water. Elsewhere, I found Deventer in the east to be another beautiful little town with great character to walk around in. Sneek, a very small town in Friesland in the North, is also charming. If you go to Sneek, make sure you also visit Appingedam. Friesland has its own language that's apparently close to English, and a distinct identity from the rest of the Netherlands. My advice is get out of Amsterdam and see the real Netherlands.
