Agreed! That was also the time when I lived in the village growing up at West 11th and Hudson near the White Horse tavern. I will never forget walking these streets, often going to my favorite pizza shops like Almalfis on 7th Ave. and Famous Ray's on 6th Ave.

We really were neighbors! Washington was the actual cross street. My father lived at 317 W 11th st. and I spent most of my summers there. My friends Tim and Kathena still live in an apartment building next door. I have very good memories of New York at that time. I imagine most off the landmarks that I remember in the immediate neighborhood no longer exist like a restaurant called Le Petit Robert restaurant, Ziska's laundromat (owned by a sweet older couple) and a Spanish restaurant that had flamingo dancing.

Bar-B-Treat store at the corner of Carmine and Bleecker Streets was replaced by the original Joe's Pizza. Interesting to see what was there in the 70s compared to the 90s. Only one store I noticed is still there in the 2020's: Bleecker Street Pastry. (Named changed to Rocco's but still the same pastry shop as far as I can tell.)

First shot is looking towards Father Demo Square, the second shot of the O.Henry Steakhouse is smack dab on West 4th and 6th Ave, a block away is the Saint Joseph’s Church, which is seen for a split second before the frame cuts off. Damn, how it all changed...

Everyone is well-dressed, stores all had character.... Bleecker Street still had an Italian vibe back then. I really liked seeing the fish store employees washing the cutting board outside vigorously and the other guy beckoning the camera crew to come inside. Vibrant, poignant and a great capture of a bygone era. Filming this today would look have empty stores, overpriced boutiques and just a plain depressing atmosphere.

It's insane to me how NYC has changed. From crime-infested, drug and mob overrun, almost bankrupt, and Manhattan almost being completely abandoned by businesses and big corporations... to one of the safest and by far the most prosperous city on the planet. This was arguably the most impressive revitalizations not just in the USA, but of any city ever in human history. It still has problems, but modern NYC looks like the utopia that dreamers were predicting back in the day (sans flying cars).
