1970s NZ Motocross, North Island Championship: Pukete farewell (1970, Husqvarna, CZ, Bultaco, BSA)

On 29 November, 1970, the North Island Motocross Championship was held at Pukete Road.
Hugh Anderson, Alan Collison and Ross McLaren were the title favourites, with former road racing world champion Hugh Anderson emerging on top after three hard-fought races.
This was the last motocross meeting held at the Pukete circuit, on the outskirts of Hamilton city, before the ground was used for the new sewage works. What a 'waste'!
The 'Swedish boy' mentioned in the commentary is Per Klitlan… from Denmark.

Wow, I grew up in Pukete in the 80's, and remember going down to what was known as 'The Pit' on my BMX. I remember the Motor X bikes racing around and thinking how massive the tracked looked!! I never realised they used to race there. Thanks for sharing!!

Still a popular area for mountain biking, with the local club maintaining a permanent track adjacent to the sewage treatment centre - I ride it regularly, but can be a bit pongy at times! No motors allowed though.
