Late to the comments (only discovered this in Sept 2019) but... Thanks for putting this together. Great fun. 8 of out of 15! At the risk of being pedantic, Fantasy Island was a US show so I was only listening out for UK ones as billed (not that I would have got that one anyway!!!). Oh, I didn't know what Michael Bentine's Potty Time was so I had a look on KZbin afterwards and I am now hooked. Thanks again for compiling this. :-)

Mary, Mungo & Midge is my all time favourite as a child and I loved the theme tune to it. Every time I hear it, I'm straight back to being 5yrs old again - happy days 😊

I got 11 out of 15. I didn't recognise 1, 10, 11 and 12 though have heard of UFO and Space 1999. Good to hear dear old Richard Baker on "Mary, Mungo and Midge" ( I have the LP) and the opening hand on "The Tomorrow People" credits used to freak me out!

Got them all except for 5 and 10. Incidentally, bit naughty of you to throw in a US show as a ringer!!!! Good quiz, BTW.

Tales of the unexpected theme used to terrify me as a kid. These 70s themes seems to be dark tunes anyway, dark days I guess.

I agree....they fill me with a weird sense of dread?! 😏

Well I remembered every tune, unfortunately I didn't quite match it to the programme, only managed 9. My excuse - I was still at primary and a we didn't have a TV for a lot of the 70s! Those were the days - you had your own imagination. (Not a disney dictated thought process - with their 'idea' of a moral message, telling you that your a failure but you can be a real princess!) Rant over. Thanks for uploading Geoff, I really enjoyed trying to dig up old memories.

Well done on your score! Children these days have to be spoon fed with copious amounts of organised interactive activities. I loved having the freedom of just going out to play. Seeing what happened and just doing it. I'd hate to be a child these days
@gills4thrills4 жыл бұрын
@TheRenaissanceman65 you're upbringing sounds the same as mine. We had a playing field close to our houses. Mum's would shout their child's name from the back door when it was time yo come in for their tea. We didn't have to wear hi viz jackets and walk together in a 'walking bus formation', have a responsible adult supervising us who'd been on a training course. And our parents didn't have to sign indemnity /declaration forms for insurance purposes. I don't remember a single child who was hurt, abducted or abused in any way in those days!

I hated It's a Knockout and Tales Of the Unexpected. I never watched The Cuckoo Waltz, Fantasy Island or Armchair Thriller, which I didn't recognise, but I watched all the others. Lewis Collins was in The Cuckoo Waltz before he was Bodie in The Professionals. I was a teenager in the seventies, born in 1961.

I'm going to be honest, I had most of nearly all of them right, except for 14, I don't remember potty time at all, I was born in 1969 so maybe it was before then, the 1970's were the best days of my life, TV was great, safe at home with my family, no bills, no real worries, oh those really were the days.

We only got 2 of these in South Africa, and both were BADLY dubbed into Afrikaans. "Alpha 1999" (Space 1999) and "Blitspatrolie" (The Sweeney). These are the only UK shows I remember from the early days. I'm wondering how they got around the Equity ban. My guess is they were produced by American companies. The SABC ruined several good shows by dubbing them into "the world's ugliest language": The Waltons, The Paper Chase, Thunderbirds and the 6 Million Dollar Man all suffered under the heavy hand of the SABC's dubbing department.

Only one I didn't get was armchair thriller, though the tune did sound familiar
@postscript674 жыл бұрын
I was disappointed not to know 5 of them, but then I saw that 3 were science fiction, which I've never liked, and one was Armchair Thriller, which I've never heard of. The only one I didn't recognise but remember watching was Fantasy Island, but I'll make the excuse that American themes were never as memorable or distinctive as British ones (apart from the Rockford Files or Mission Impossible maybe!).

No. 11 was not armchair thriller. Simply "Thriller". It was a Saturday night British series. Armchair Theatre was a series of British plays- both seperate and distinct series.
@sdball015 жыл бұрын
A belated response... You are correct in stating that there was a show called Thriller (a UK anthology show created by Brian Clemens, 1973 to 1976; not to be confused with the US anthology show in the 1960s hosted by Boris Karloff). Also, as you point out, there was the long running Armchair Theatre (1956 to 1974). However, there is Armchair Thriller (which no 11 is the theme tune), which in a serial format adapted novels and stories, running from 1978 to 1980. At time of writing (Sept 2019), there are some examples available on KZbin such as the opening titles, along with special Thames ident (taken from the first story 'Rachel In Danger'): kzbin.info/www/bejne/onvSi6aHoKt3qq8 ; as well as some actual episodes. If you like stories with twists and occasional spooky moments (depending on the story), they are worth looking out for. :-)

@AndrewHalliwell4 жыл бұрын
Nope not likely lads. Quite the opposite, a couple of liverpudlian girls flat sharing versus a couple of Geordie blokes coming to terms with not being young anymore... Liver birds was a very different show. Very different theme tune too. "Oh, what happened to you? Whatever happened to me? What became of the people, we used to be?"
@rjjcms13 жыл бұрын
@TheRenaissanceman65 Thanks for that,we watched both those shows quite a bit in the 70s when I was a kid,and I could never fathom out what the hell they were singing on the Liver Birds Theme. I thought it might be some kind of semi-local dialect,perhaps a gypsy one or something.

I must have spent too much time in front of the TV as a kid. Nearly didn't get 8, just remembered. Very confident I have them all so far. Goodness 9. So familiar, just cant place. You're correct about number 10 and highlights the ambiguity of my choice for a quiz title. It should be ' Programmes watched on British TV in the 1970s'. I was trying to help British people find a quiz that didn't solely focus on American TV shows that we might not have watched here in Britain.
