1972 Boston Whaler 13 restoration. I have faired out the transom. I had some serious issues with the sans paper gumming up so i am going to try using PVA over the top of the fairing compound to eliminate the tacky.

Your tacky surface is common when using poly laminating resins/fillers. They stay tacky so that they can provide a chemical bond with the next layer that goes on top of them. Nice for workflows where you want to build many layers over the course of days without sanding in between. If you want to cure a laminating poly resin then PVA is a common way to do that. Make sure you wash the PVA off before sanding (scotch brite pad and warm water) as you don't want that ground into your fiberglass. Finishing poly resins/fillers should cure hard on the surface and should not have the issues you are seeing. I have not worked with APF 4 before and after looking up their data sheet the product is poorly documented. Most resins have much more complete datasheets, they don't even specify if they are a finishing or laminating filler and give almost no information on their cure process. The filler is very inexpensive, which makes me wonder a little about it quality. It may be great but the lack of documentation and very low price feel like a little bit of a yellow flag. How is this filler going to hold up to the pounding a flex that boats are made to take? Either way great project, I love Boston Whaler's, and I think your craftmanship is great. Also I'm impressed that you took the time to sand back to gel coat and grind out all the old epoxy patches. Good Luck!

Using cheap fairing compound. Use Epoxy fairing compound like total boat

Hi , I got to 6:05 and relised you haven't discovered that the thin black coat between the gelcoat and chop strand hull fiberglass is a (i believe ) urethane waterproof coat . or some other type of waterproof coat.

I did notice it. I have no idea what it is i covers the entire boat right over the glass it is a micro thin layer. I was assuming some coating sprayed into the mold right before lay up original to boat. I cant imagine the boat was ever compleetly stripped to bare glass and primed in the past.

@@StoneBrokeAdventure mine is the same , I’d like to try recoating the repairs that penetrate that layer with a tough waterproofing paint and will try one part urethane. I’ll need to test compatibility of bonding with the outer gelcoat and inner fiberglass.

@@harrisjones8352 i cant immagine it is urethane . I would guess a black gel coat layer to produce some sort of contrast for the fiberglass layer .

@@StoneBrokeAdventure It was very tough to sand through. Not sure the purpose but waterproofing as close to the surface as possible will limit any absorption of water.
