My father who left Sindh in 1947, was very angry with Indira Gandhi for releasing the POWs. He felt that they should have been handed over to the Bengalis who in their Rightful anger would have tried them for war crimes and hanged the whole lot of them. Tarek Fatah Sir has correctly said that India won the 1971 war but lost the game as India failed to grab the opportunity for taking back POK and capture Sindh province. India could have liberated Baluchistan also along-with East Pakistan (Bangladesh). While liberating Bangladesh, India could have kept some portion of northern stretch of Bangladesh adjacent to chicken neck region. All prisoners of war held in Pakistan could have been released immediately. Such hard steps could have been taken so that Pakistan never dare to stare at India.

The mother language for most Indian languages is Sanskrit. The debate is not whether Hindi or Punjabi language are superior, people who migrate out of their states don't have practice of speaking in their original mother tongue. As long as we speak in at least 1 Indian language, we are still connected to our roots. Punjab was further divided into 3 more states for political gains based on many issues one of them being language. I think the Punjab has been left to lick its wounds over a period of time. And besides, there are many people in India, who now only speak in English. This debate is about not about availing the opportunity of the 1971 War victory.
