Very underrated design. I love these Maverick/Comet body style. They are light weight and make good drag racers.

When I went to work at a Lincoln/Mercury dealership as a salesman, I drove a demo, mostly Cougars. My young bride needed a car as she also worked, so it was a year old 71 Comet GT with a very, very tired 302. Spend $425 rebuilding the 302, or spend $597 for a new 351. So it got the 351 which we hopped up a bit with headers, carb and intake and better cam and ignition. About every 3 months we needed a new set of rear tires!! But it was a fun car, and with a set of 3:70 gears in the rear it was a high 13 second car in the quarter mile.

I would’ve loved on that car, I had a 71, GT it was originally zinc, yellow, but somebody painted it red, I upgraded the brake system, added the power booster. Brakes went disc, polyurethane, driving up and down hills I needed to stop in power especially when I traded out my 95 sob 93 turbo because it could not carry the magazines. Mine had power steering and also had the rear passenger side. Remove mirror. At the time the only upgrade that I added to it was I got a mercury rim blow steering wheel. One rainy night the car got wrecked. It still ran and drove, but the tranny tunnel was dented up , I sold it to my friend when he passed away his son inherited the car. However, when I went to go buy it back, he said my car and decided that he wanted to put it in auto cross. I may end up with the upgrades that I did do to the original comment as he’s switching out the entire suspension and chassis but I need another 71, GT and this one looks like it would fit the bill. I’ve always wanted to do the Crager look as when I had it had the original 14 inch steel wheels with the hubcaps .

@@mmradventures9636 Yes, she still has it. Back in 1981 bought 11 Maverick's and Comet GT's for $1750 from a Lincoln/Mercury Ford dealer. All were former loaner /rental cars 7 had 302 engines and the other 4 had 250 engines. All were A/T A/C and P/S cars None newer than 1972. I kept the best two for my daughters. All were super clean and needed very little work. I sold the other 9 at a good profit that I used to mod the other two. The other was a '71 Maverick Grabber. Dark Bronze with black interior. Oldest daughter got that one and she still has it also. Yes, these cars are hard to find but they're out there. I know of a few in AZ but they aren't cheap money to buy anymore.

I tried to comment yesterday but for some reason it did not post. Nice example of a Comet GT, tastefully done. I noticed that when the color change was dine they painted the engine compartment black, originally it would have been the body color. I did the same thing on ine of mine. In 1971 I special ordered a Comet GT, triple black, 302, 3 speed. In 1972 I purchased a second Comet GT for my wife, yellow/black, 302, C4. Both of them were modified, mine had tri power, headers, 4 speed, special paint and stripes, etc. Here was painted to match mine. They were both featured in a magazine. I sold both of them, mine is still local, hers is in Ohio. I tried to post photos but UTube would not allow the attachment.

@@mmradventures9636 Yes a 302, that I had to order ,even though I had a GT ordered. I later built the en with performance parts myself. Professionally P&P stock heads , triple cut valves, Crower Cam w/ dual valve springs. The cam a .480 lift, by a 280* duration. That’s pretty close to a Boss 302 spec. Then dual exhaust side pipes , with Hush Thrush, & Hooker Headers. Eddlebrock, Torker high rise single plain manifold , w/ Holley 600 4 bbl, & plenum divider. MSD 2 ignition box, with a Mallory dual point, later changed to an Alison photo electronic ignition for the stock distributor. A B&M C4 shift kit , & a 3000 stall. A 3:80 Ford Posi. A 3 core Modine Radiator, & B&M trans cooler. It beat BB & SB Chevys , SB Mopars , lots of HP GM products of that era. Beat a few Corvettes, & beat a built Pontiac formula 400 phase IV Trans AM Firebird . & a 455 Nova with a 4 speed transmission. I beat just about everything except a dude with a 1971 Boss 351! IMy Comet GT was very quick. Let’s put it this way, the Maverick Grabber was an appearance package, & I think the Comet GT was too? I know I had to order the 302 extra, & it even cost extra to put the gear shift on the floor! Absolutely no performance options were available on any engine, or no gear options. Ford was very limited on options while GM & CC had a ton available even on their compacts. It was all DIY, to make those cars competitive.

For the Chevy enthusiasts, claiming a 69 Z28 couldn’t be beat by a Boss 302, I beat at least one ,with my Comet GT. He had a 4 sp. mine was an Automatic. A guy with a built 1970 SS 396 Chevelle went down to the little Merc GT too! Man it was quick as lightning.

Remember, it's his car, not yours. Plus, he told us specifically that it has a non original motor and other parts. Also, the shifter IS OEM! I have had five of them. Three had that floor mount shifter.

That is a gem.😎👍🏻 Just two minor quibbles I can point out. First is to address the brakes and suspension. Put some disks on the front at minimum and modernize every bushing and shock on that baby you can. Second thing is put some spinners on those Cragar rims!😁 Ain't an American muscle car ever been made that a set of Cragar rims didn't make look better. Especially in the dark low light cruising around spinners flashing. No way I would ever sell that!
