1971 was a very important year for the Olympia contest for a number of reasons. Two of which were: 1. Arnold was the only competitor 2. It was the first year of the "Non-Sanctioned" rule.

The amazing thing about Arnold is that he walked around like he was 5'10" and 180lbs. Agile and effortless. Today they walk around like they just had back surgery, with a stick up their asses...

1974 was his best shape when he was beginning to hit his peak. 243 lbs (compared to 251.8 lbs or 114 kg at 1971), but striated, lean and huge. He said in his book, he gained mass in upper back, hamstring and upper chest in 1974 to make him perfectly proportioned.

A year before, Bill Pearl had made it known that he was coming out retirement to take on all comers at the 1971 NABBA Mr. Universe. The Weiders obviously instituted the rule to keep Arnold from risking a loss against Pearl in an overseas venue they couldn't control.
@jimlynch5842
@jimlynch5842 7 жыл бұрын
Yes, that is true. But it is also true that Pearl refused to enter the Olympia to compete against Larry Scott, Sergio Oliva, and Arnold. He said he thought you had to be a "Weider Boy" to win, and today we know this as correct. I think he was wise to do it the way he did, and finish out a star.

@silversurfer4441
@silversurfer4441 5 жыл бұрын
Right. Arnold was massive, but not TOO massive. He pushed the envelope as far as he could just short of sacrificing aesthetics. Today, aesthetics is sacrificed on the altar of mass. But the thing is, they're only a little more massive than Arnold but HUGELY less aesthetic.

That non sanction rule only made sense if it was directed @ a reigning Mr. Olympia, otherwise it was suffocating competitors & preventing them from having more titles & gaining more prize money. It was a move implemented by tge Weider brothers I think largely because they knew a reigning Mr Universe would overshadow a reigning Mr Olympia in comparison.

Nick, love your vids. You post so much I figure the least I could do would be to give you an idea for another video. Don Youngblood, the bodybuilder who came back during the early 2000's to win the master's Olympia and then ended up qualifying for the real Olympia the year or so after but dying soon after (at about age 50) I believe. I could shoot you ideas for days but you could also cover the Guru chad "diet doc" nichols (ronnie Coleman, flex wheeler, Dallas mccarver, etc's guru).

In those days there was a limited pool of bodybuilders to pull to these competitions so it made sense to try to keep as many on their own brand as possible. These days there are vast numbers of pro and amateur bodybuilders with plenty to go round so I don't think it matters anymore as long as the qualifying rules are still at a high standard to keep Olympia as the premier best of the best show.

The Oak should never have competed in Sydney 1980. He may have won the trophy but he lost so much more. Some competitors find it hard to give up their sport and knowing the right time to just walk away. I suppose when you’re rubber stamped the title you’re true integrity is questioned. That’s why Lee Priest is number one ☝️ in my humble opinion. True aussie.

After I saw pictures of Arnold and Frank Zane, I just can't look at modern bodybuilders anymore. I think it maybe because of different mindsets. I saw countless interviews with Arnold and also few with Frank Zane and they give impression of really-really smart people. Arnold is still the bar that others try to reach. We are left with disproportionate monster trucks today. That’s why popularity of the sport has plummeted. I am glad to have competed in bodybuilding in the 90’s ( 1995-97 NWCBB) before bodybuilding in general got to its current state.

The Weider Brothers read the writing on the wall: In order to be the premier bodybuilding federation the IFBB had to implement the "no compete" rule in order to deter bodybuilders from competing for other organizations. The best bodybuilders would be under one roof and the Weiders would reap the rewards. The downside is it deterred bodybuilders from competing in NABBA and other leagues which caused to them go belly up. Still, I don't think people are committed to leagues as they are their favorite bodybuilders. The same goes for the NFL, MLB and NBA. Folks want t see the best physiques and if that means supporting IFBB events they will do that.
