I worked the hockey coverage for ABC sports during the 88 winter olympics...Ken Dryden (who was doing colour for ABC with Michaels calling the games) had me keeping track of so many things and passing him notes... I could barely keep up. I couldn't feed him enough info for his analytical brain.

Besides being a great goalie, Krn Dryden is man of character. Even now, as he is taking a stand against the NHL & they're denial of concussions. Always a stand up guy.

Great look back, not only at Ken but the changed thinking in the wake of the 72 Series. The Habs would go on to win the Cup that season, then Ken would do the unthinkable: take a two-year hiatus from hockey to finish his lawyer qualifications. Oh... and yes, the sideburns:)

Stephen: It was a 1 year hiatus (the 1973-4 season; he was back for 1974-5).

@@pastorfergus Correct. He actually took the year off due to a contract dispute, and when he returned, he had the new mask and the new pads, so he looked quite different. I also remember when he missed many games due to back surgery in 1972-73, and luckily Wayne Thomas and Michel Plasse did a very credible job in goal.

I agree and had we taken them serious and given our team a better chance to gel and we played 😁 playoff style hockey because we all know it's a different animal it would have been the cakewalk we all predicted

He stunk in the 72' series. Esposito was far better against the Russians. Dryden was great in the NHL but always struggled against the Russians.

31terreri You are 100% correct. Unfortunately, though Dryden was a great goalie, he struggled against European competition before he made the NHL (1969 at Cornell), in 1972 and again on December 31, 1975. As Phil Esposito said prior to the 72 series, if players from the WHA are not going to be allowed to play, the team should be called "Team NHL," not "Team Canada." Your goalies for the Summit Series should have been Tony Esposito and Gerry Cheevers. If Bobby Hull had been allowed to play, if they invited Dave Keon, if Bobby Orr had been healthy, there is a real possibility that Paul Henderson would not have been chosen to play. Rogie Vachon played brilliantly in the 1976 Canada Cup. It's a joke that Bobby Orr was awarded the tournament's "outstanding player." Vachon was robbed. And Dryden quietly backed out of that one, which was a great decision on his part. He never played well against international competition. As Phil Esposito said, "One on one, Dryden was great. But if you could get him moving side to side like the Russians did, you had him."

I thought so, too, but I’ve rewatched those games and he was outstanding in the two games in Russia, especially the final game. It’s interesting to watch him now because we don’t have that standup-style of goaltending anymore. When he gets scored on, it looks bad, but those kick saves and diving saves are amazing. Watch those games if you get a chance! He’s a really exciting goalie.

Good thing that Rogie played. That was a great team and Rogie was MVP. So happy that Rogie finally got in the hall of fame. Long overdue. Ken knew when to retired. The Habs were declining after 79 season.

Yes, you could argue that Ken was overrated because he played for the 1976-1979 Habs and they were a great team. There were quite a few games where he only saw 12-14 shots on goal. IMO, Dryden’s shining moment was in his very first season in 1971 when he stole the Stanley Cup from both Boston and Chicago. The Bruins and Blackhawks were heavily favored in the semifinals and finals, respectively, and Dryden was superb against both. I do agree there were better goalies in his era, notably Ed Giacomin, Tony Esposito, Bernie Parent, and Gerry Cheevers. Cheevers is an odd case - he’s arguably not as good as Dryden for the regular season, but he was a money goalie when you needed that big save in a tight game. I’m 69 and a lifelong Blues fan. Goalies were far more entertaining back then and even into the mid-1990’s. The advent of the “Quebec Butterfly” with taller leg pads with the medial knee landing pad has made all goalies look identical and robotic. Goalies used to have to get back up on your skates after dropping to the ice, but now they just slide across on those knee pads. They kinda look like goalies in tabletop rod hockey games now, just sliding side to side!

In the day Parent was better. Habs possibly the most stacked team until Gretzky’s Oilers came along. Certainly on D with Robinson, Savard and Lapointe
