I always wondered why people hated these trucks so much. But I've always had the same impression that they are lessor than the Fords and Chevys. But I don't know why. Just seems like few people bought them and poor people drove them. Few looked like they were taken care of. No pride of ownership with people who owned them. You were an exception. I always like underdogs and like these too.

I'm not a fan of Dodge (because I'm a Chevy guy) however the Dodge D and W series trucks from 1972 to 1979 are some of my favorite pickups mostly for their body style and choice of grilles and their round headlights, before they all switched over to square headlights in the 1980-81 models.

Yes, like todays four doors and a sandbox. Blame the younger generation. That is what they want. I would love to have a 1972 Dodge. Has my favorite grill of all this generation Dodge pickups. Now they have stupid coil springs in the back. Watch them at Lowes and Home Depot all the time and yes, they droop bad. All I hear is you can get air bags optional. I say BS. just more to go wrong. When you buy a truck, it should be ready to work as is without having to buy extra crap.

First year Dodge built a truck to compete with Ford & Chevy. I had a 71 D-100 that had Johnny lightning special decals on the sides. Truck was sold new at Palmer dodge in Indy, i suppose it had something to do with the Indy 500 that year. Truck had 38k on it when i got it, came with a 383 & 3.55 gears. Drove terrible, rode like a log wagon, but it ran like a scalded dog. Fun old truck, but it was crude, even had a fake vinyl top.

My Uncle Charles bought a 72 Dodge D100 from the HVAC company he worked for at that time. They got all new Ford trucks and vans in 92. He gave it to my Grandpa to use on the farm. I now have the drive train in a 85 Dodge D150 (360 & 727 torqueflit) and I know it has over 400k miles on that engine and transmission. HVAC company had it rebuilt ever 100k. The 72 body fell apart and I pulled the engine/trans and put it in the 85 truck I bought for $500 with a crapped out 318. The only thing I get pissed about is Dodge wiring doesn't hold up!
@PettyMower3 жыл бұрын
Awesome! I'm surprised the HVAC company would rebuild the engine every 100k. You'd think they would just replace the entire truck. You gained power switching to the 360, but lost 1/2 the fuel economy. LOL I've had both....and am fond of the 318.
@TheLawman3183 жыл бұрын
@@PettyMower The man that owned the HVAC grew up during the depression and was tight as the bark on a tree! His son was taking the business over in 92 and bought the new trucks. My Uncle Charles bought that truck from the company for $100! The truck I have the drivetrain in now is 4x4 and would climb the wall if I could get it started. I use it mainly on the farm.

@drewdane4013 жыл бұрын
@DamnStraightM35A2 That is true, but it was still brand new in 1972. It was a clean-sheet redesign for that year. Apart from engines, there wasn't anything carried over from the Sweptline trucks of 64-71. IIRC, it was far superior to the Ford and Chevy trucks of the time as well. But as Chrysler always does, they sat back and let the competition catch up... And then pass them... And then sat around some more until they were irrelevant... Then built something revolutionary... Then sat back, etc.
