1972 Ford Gran Torino NASCAR edition Part 1

Here are different pictures from the '72 Gran Torino in Nascar racing. Different drivers as Bobby Isaac, Dick Brooks and Donnie Allison drove this beast at speed exceeding 150 mph. These cars were part of the Ford racing division.

The FORD 427 was the strongest motor in NASCAR from 1963-69. Chevy's thin-wall 427 was fast but couldn't stay together. FORD finished 1-2-3-4-5 at Daytona in '63 and won 48 of the 53 races in '65. Chevy never officially got their 427 "mystery motor" approved by Bill France and so they took their toys and basically went home. Boo Hoo to the Blowtie! The number 427 is therefore "Competition Proven" by FORD and is more closely associated with Dearborn. The Blue Oval Forever!

Anything with the names of Holman and Moody or Bud Moore gets my automatic approval. My mom had a '72 Gran Torino Sport. It was gold with a white top but it just had a 351W with a 2 barrel.

Yes. It was Bud Moore that showed NASCAR that a race-tuned 351 could run very well. Just another example of Ford people leading the way in NASCAR R&D. Moore, the Wood Brothers and Holman & Moody helped to make NASCAR what it is today. But all you hear about are Childress, Hendrick and Gibbs. They'd be nothing without the above-named Ford people's hard work.

Wasn't the Gran Torino the 1st car to compete with a small block motor? Seems they went to war with the 351 against 429's, 440's, and 454's

Ford made a 427 a 428 and a 429. 427 swere what you found in the Cobras, there was the 427 cammer motor that had over head cams driven by a huge chain.

once upon a time Hemis, 427 SO, & 429 Boss stomped around the tracks. then came that racing ban, cupcake GM, sniveling about how slow their shit was and couldnt compete with the big boys. thanks for killing the big blocks and all the R&D Ford and Chrysler did. i hate GM!!
