No matter what year what time or whenever Hawthorne came off the Line they had that excitement that made every one in the stands take notice. Really reminds me of a tremendous fire works exhibition. You see all the rockets ready to be fired each one has brilliance and shining stars Hawthorne Musically and Emotionally make their own fireworks display come into pyrotechnic excellence and talk about a grand finale. Well hold on to your seats because Hawthorne does not disappoint they will give you a grand finale in drum corps that will leave you asking for more. Thats Hawthorne in a nut shell and they never ever disappoint their fans. Thank You Hawthorne for providing years of excellence. Keep the Hawthorne Strong going on and on.

I was at that the Racine show that nite and remember it well. I was marching with 76 in the snare line. Have some wonderful memories of that show and the cabs. i marched forever with 76. I am now living in Texas and fly to Hawthorne to march with the cab alumni. Im fulfilling my dream. I am 72 and still march. Gotta love it!

A Cadet from '63 to '72. Was great the first few years, but got my teeth kicked in from there. Had aspirations of senior D & B at age out at the end of '72. Sky was my choice all season long. But as a Cadet competitor in Whitewater and my only appearance as spectator in Racine that night, I made a change of mind after witnessing that awesome performance by the Cabs. That night changed my life. Mr. Costello had a spot waiting for me when I got back to N.J.and I never looked back. Won three consecutive DCA's and retired from drum corp on top.

While I was a member of the Long Island sunrises, from 1964 through 1968, we competed against the Caballeros many many times. In 1966 or 1967, we started to beat the Hawthorne Caballeros. Even though I felt it was a major accomplishment, I couldn't believe we actually beat them, the excitement was through the roof. I always felt how could that be possible such a great drum and bugle Corps and we finally beat them. However in 1968, we were the American Legion national champions, in New Orleans Louisiana. But at the 1968 dream contest, we came in 4th? John Sasso, may he rest in peace. Hired to Independent handwriting experts. They both came up with the same conclusion, that the score sheets were manipulated, we were technically first. But because of people changing and maneuvering scores, we ended up in 4th just ahead of the Skyliners. First time ever at the dream contest, it took approximately 45 minutes for the scores to be announced, the audience was getting upset why is it taking so long. The difference between first and 4th, the scores were approximately 1/10 of a point apart? The fix was in right from the get-go. I found out through the years that a lot of Judges were biased and it was obvious in some cases. To this day I still resent the outcome of that competition. Sunrise should have been in first place, by several tents if not points. And when the scores were announced that day the crowd was, booing and booing, they could not believe what they were hearing. Overall the audience including our members would totally upset and left the contest, totally frustrated. I had several friends in the Caballeros, and they agreed, that the scores were changed, to put us in fourth place. I don't mean to come across as a sore loser, but I can't see the corruption in the activity just like our politicians today. Today is July 28th 2022. And I still get frustrated thinking about what took place. As I said I love the Caballeros for many many years, I don't believe it was that fault it was just the judges. God Bless America I apologize for any errors and punctuation spelling, I am visually impaired and it is very difficult for me to make Corrections. I will be 79 years old this September. That is hard to believe.

I remember 72 because I joined the Cabs after the season started and al that season I shadowed Cos. I got a first hand lesson in not pissing him off, which I did anyway in 73 when I got my shot at playing, It was a great time for drum corp. I wish the Cabs would play a retro show. Pick the best over the years and play an exit number. Was great and it still gives me chills to listen. I live in Florida now and wish I could play in the alumni corp. Just can't afford it.

Al, Thank you for this post. I had no clue there was even a recording of this show. My first year in Cabs coming over from Sunrisers. This show will live in my Heart forever. 20 years old, standing in front of the best Drum Corps in the nation. If you remember, the pandemonium started when our 16 Mellophones were locked out before we even started. The Trooper opened the gate while the rest of the Corps was standing on the starting line and they marched in 2 by 2. THEN... it got loud !

I marched with he Cabs only in he Fall of '72. Played in front of Macy's and the Jets halftime. I went to graduate school. I probably was never good enough to make the horn line for the competition season, but was proud to say I wore the uniform for a few parades.

I also remember what happened in DCA,,(we lost) ....I am sure you have a point somewhere..mine was we won Nationals in Chicago....ah "no offense" ;-)

No offense Mike but after 3 day's of reworking our entire show from the exit forward, and a side trip to Racine the night before we were all exhausted. Yes, you beat us by 2 tenths in the Nationals but, if you remember what happened in Schenectady the following Week, we came back and beat the Skyliners, winning the show and breaking up their undefeated streak.BTW, we 5 pointed Crusaders that night. The following Weekend was my first DCA World Title. What a ride.
