Hi Mark, this was the MK4 as Des Wahlberg designed it, Sermon E. Knudsen and Henry Ford 2nd saw it loved it and the car SAW NO CHANGE from concept, to what was sold to the customer, very rare as usually there is major alterations to make it easier and or cheaper to build. All the usual engineering and body pressing engineering guys were NOT ALLOWED by HF2 & Knudsen to alter anything. So it looks terrific with the tall grill and the beautiful multi-angle rear bar. In fact Ford won an industrial manufacturing award for two items on the early MK4 Conti's, the gigantic seven foot long bonnet pressing due to its multiple fine pressings to get the knife edge sharp lines in the bonnet and at the front it has the square cut sharp central section, but at the sides it has to curve downwards and there is an area which must morph and blend, similar story with the rear bar multiple curves and angles in a small area on the same piece of steel. Very hard to produce as a drop forge tool/tooling, however the engineering guys did it and won a high level award for their excellent ability to mass produce such a complex pressed body panel, and complex rear bumper. Re the differences, the 1973 model just had the heavy 5 mph damage proof front bumper and shorter grill, but rest of the car was the same with the lovely award winning rear curvaceous bumper, plus with fuel filler behind rear numberplate, the lower boot floor, taller rear mudguards, and way larger fuel tank, The last 3 years of the Mark4's were almost a different model as the rear quarter panel is entirely different with lower rear mudguards, a higher rear boot floor which cuts the size of the rear boot capacity, further is lost with the fuel pipe pressing intrusion as well from its relocated fuel tank filler on the rear left mudguard plus a way smaller fuel tank sitting over rear axle, instead of under the boot floor like in the first 2 model years, there's around a 20 litre difference. Re the external bonnet catch, the internal locking (with key) bonnet release was an option you paid extra for !!

Illuminated door locks ten years before Aussie LTDs got them. About the only part of the MkIV that I don't love, is the dash... Mark it sounds like you've got a faulty accelerator pump. Pumping the pedal like that should have made it kick easily, but it seemed to make little to no difference. It could be (depending on what carby is on it) a dried and shrunk plunger seal (Edelbrocks/Carter) or stuck check valve (Holley/Motorcraft).

@markbehr88 What's it like having a car named after you, budd? And Yeah, 464 Nm or 342 lb-ft of torque, pretty cool for a car with the same tiny carburetor as the Australian LX 351C. I found two figures for the 460 that year..429 was 212 hp, with 443 Nm or 327 ft-lb of torque, while the the 460, rated at 224 hp, but importantly, 215 is quoted elsewhere as well. The dual exhaust Australian 351C 2V 4bbl was 217 hp and 429 Nm or 316 lb-ft for 76-79. Richard Langworth, Personal Luxury : The Thunderbird Story, the 72 model year Mark IV and T- Bird sharing Sure Track, optional disc rear brakes and the same 460 engine.
