I'm an Alabama fan, however I really hope to see Nebraska become a powerhouse once again. It's good for college football. I'm 44 and growing up that standard block N was iconic to me. I still say the 1994/95 Nebraska team was the greatest college football team of all time. They didn't just beat their opponents; they obliterated them.

Big time Oklahoma fan here. Maybe not the GOAT team, but, after watching NCAA football for over 60 years, I never have seen a defense that good, before or since. Glover, Jacobson, Dutton and Harper were so far ahead of their time. The starters only allowed THREE touchdowns in 11 games. And offense? Tagge, Rodgers, Kenney and an overachieving line…incredible. Now the OU-NU game itself in 1971…yes…definitely the best I have ever seen. Even as a young lad, remembering how stoked the whole household was during that game.

Me too. I was an 8th grader in northwestern Montana at that time and had been watching and playing football with my friends since the early 1960s. I clearly remember the excitement surrounding this matchup and vividly remember watching it on Thanksgiving Day. And I agree, it's the best college game I've ever seen, and I've seen a lot of them. I have a pretty good copy of this game on DVD.

@tonypatton2084, I'm knocking on 70 years of age and I'm a devout Sooner fan and I'll never forget that Thanksgiving Day in 1971, my parents had Thanksgiving Day dinner at our house and my mother had 10 siblings, 7 men and 3 women, and the women had their spouses at our house that day, thank God we lived in a two story house with a bigger than normal livingroom, we even had to bring chairs from the diningroom into the living room, the noise from everybody watching the game was almost as loud as being at the game in person. But to this day, I've seen many great college football games, but none of them can beat the 1971 Game of the Century between OU and Nebraska. OU should've won that game but their turnovers and penalties really hurt them, even though Nebraska had a great team and a coach, things like that happen when you play a really good team like Nebraska. I mostly worked the oilfields and construction most of my working career, but there were two Saturdays that I'd take off each year and those were the days when OU played Texas and Nebraska. I too miss the days of the greatness the Nebraska football program used to have for so many years. I was hoping Scott Frost would turn that program around, but he didn't have the players with the talent that he needed, not to mention, I personally believe the present day generation of college football players are mostly a bunch of spoiled brats that get their feelings hurt too easy when the coaches discipline them about anything and if the players don't get their way, they hit the transfer portal, that should've never been allowed, along with the NIL BS. The kneelers in the NFL have ruined the NFL, including the woosified pro bowl, and I'm convinced college football will go down the drain with the NIL BS and the easy transfer portal for brats that don't get their way, that's just how I see it.

In the 1971 Nebraska - Oklahoma game (2 months prior to this game) Oklahoma scored 31 points (3TDs) and put up 467 yards total offense against Nebraska. I think your comment about allowing only 3 TDs for the entire season is a bit off. Nebraska had a very good defense but if you allow 467 yds and 31 points in a single game you ain't great. Nebraska played a lot of pitty-pat teams. In fact only two were ranked - Oklahoma (#2) and Colorado (#9). In 1971 USC went 6-4-1 and they played five ranked teams - Alabama, Oklahoma, Notre Dame, Washington and Stanford.

The lynch pin of Nebraska's run defense was Rich Glover. He completely dominated the Alabama center, Jim Krapf - 1971 All Sec, 1972 All SEC, All American , and controlled everything inside the tackles. The only way Alabama could control him was by double teaming ... which they didn't do enough. The only center who could come close to handling him one-on-one was Tom Brahaney from Oklahoma. Brahaney was a 2 x All American, played 9 years in the NFL. If you want to watch a battle look at the 1971 Oklahoma v. Nebraska game
@donaldschmidt2990
@donaldschmidt2990 6 ай бұрын
So, spot on about the 1971 Nebraska Cornhuskers and their all world defense. Led by the incomparable Rich Glover at middle guard/ nose tackle. Even Tom Brahaney, who you alluded to in your comment, had a terrible time with the Huskers "roadblock" in the middle. Brahaney spoke of how on the games first play, Glover, "shucked him like a piece of corn." Or nearly those exact words!! I believe that defense was college footballs, best of all time. Not only could they shut down every gear in an offense, but they also created a closet full of turnovers. Even against the fabulous Wishbone of Oklahoma, Nebraska's run defense shined. The Sooners stayed in the game because of a "freakishly" strong passing performance by quarterback Jack Mildren. A man who normally couldn't hit the ocean from the shore with his off-target aerials. Probably the best four players in the game were Johnny Rodgers, Glover, and the marvelous Jeff Kinney at I back. While Oklahoma's great split end Jon Harrison gave the Huskers fits in the passing game. The Nebraska defensive line was so good it had TWO Outland Trophy winners in Glover and Larry Jacobson. End Willie Harper starred in the NFL with the 49ers. This was probably the most riveting matchup in college footballs 150 plus years of existence.

@@donaldschmidt2990 Yes, the Nebraska defense was very good but the Oklahoma offense was phenomenal. They put up 467 yards total offense and 31 points on Nebraska. Nebraska won the game because of their special teams (Johnny Rogers) and they controlled - not stop, but controlled - the Oklahoma rushing attack. Oklahoma averaged 472 yds rushing per game but against Nebraska they ONLY had 279 yds. Which brings me to another observation: Jack Mildren was probably the most dangerous wishbone QB of all time. In 1971 he rushed for 1100 yds and threw for 900 yds (13.7 yds per attempt!!!). Against Nebraska he was 6-11-0 for 188 yds and 1 TD!

@clarkgreyhosky9039 You're right about the Oklahoma offense. How could you be wrong? Still, it had that one inescapable drawback. TURNOVERS AT KEY MOMENTS. Imagine what that team could have done if they'd just taken a junction break from the turnover train. Four turnovers against Nebraska was a little too much to overcome. That, and as you stated, Nebraska was magnificent in that final drive. Power and precision overpowered the Sooners at the most critical juncture. Many would be surprised that Oklahoma's offense wasn't the highest scoring of all time. That mark belonged to the 1983 Huskers at 52 points per game!! Mark Schellen, Irving Fryar, Mike Rozier, and the great dual threat quarterback Turner Gill are the most complete offensive unit of all time. Like the Sooners in 1971, a less than stellar defense barred their way to total glory. As you know, Nebraska was upset by Miami in the final moments. Of course, one of the reasons why that team was so explosive is they took a play from Oklahoma's game plan. An explosive quarterback to give an attack that extra threat in the running game. What a shame these two programs no longer face each other. That was the games greatest Rivalry at its zenith.

@@donaldschmidt2990 While turnovers (fumbles) were a killer in a wishbone offense (see 1971 Cotton Bowl - Texas committed five turnovers in first half against ND), Oklahoma had 3 turnovers (4 fumbles - 3 lost) against 1 turnover by Nebraska. While turnovers were a factor in the game it wasn't determinant. Nebraska's winning drive was just sheer determination.

Beyond a doubt college footballs best team to that time. Bear Bryant himself called it the best he ever saw. Beautiful to watch the flawless blocking of that Cornhusker line. Every man firing in unison, driving low and lifting through their opponent. Not stopping until they or their man were off their feet. I believe Devaney was college footballs best coach in terms of fundamental football. Nobody teaches blocking and tackling like this anymore. Look at the parade of mistakes Alabama made in that game. Most of them forced by Nebraskas muscle and speed. As complete a team as you could imagine. The second best team in Nebraska history until the incomparable 1995 Cornhusker edition. That team was college footballs greatest team ever. Destroying the hapless Florida Gators in the Fiesta Bowl 62-24! If you want to argue the two best teams look no further than these two games. Winning by a combined score of 100-30! The two greatest teams ever to play at one school. No doubt.

@donaldschmidt2990
@donaldschmidt2990 6 ай бұрын
@shekelberggoldstein1387 You and Claude Washington obviously did your homework in your evaluation of these legendary teams. The 71 team's key attribute was proficiency in every aspect of football. Probably, the most mistake free team of all time. How's this for a stat? The 1971 Cornhuskers forced 27 interceptions by their opponents compared to only 6 thrown by their own quarterbacks!! That is a disparity unheard of in college football. In addition, they faced three teams in the top three in the country and beat them badly. Except for Oklahoma, which possessed the most explosive offense ever seen to that time. Again, Nebraska won the turnover battle 4-2, while their special teams featured a touchdown return by the great Johnny Rodgers. The 1995 team had one factor separating them from all others. UNSTOPPABLE DEPTH!! I truly have never witnessed a team possessing so many GOOD players. Deep and well coached enough to wear down opponents loaded with future pro players. These were the calling cards of those two Husker championship teams. Unsurpassed to this day. Beyond any dispute.

Nebraska took over #1 in the polls after the first week in 1971 and ran the table, outscoring their opposition 507-104. In the final AP poll, they were #1, Oklahoma was #2, Colorado #3 and Alabama #4. The Cornhuskers played all three of those other teams, beating Oklahoma, (a team that was 11-0, 503-182 vs. its other opponents), in another “Game of the Century”, 35-31, Colorado, (9-1, 363-189), 31-7 and Alabama, (11-0, 362-84), 38-6 in the Orange Bowl. That’s a total of 104-44, an average margin of 20 points! Georgia was 9-0 when they played 8-0 Auburn and lost 20-35. Auburn was 9-0 when they lost to 10-0 Alabama 7-31. 11-0 Alabama then lost to 12-0 Nebraska 6-38. Georgia finished 11-1 and yet was 71 points worse that Nebraska!

The SEC wasnt all that and a bag of chips back then in football. The biggest factor was they were pretty much the last conference to allow blacks on campus. Another factor is the the biggest population was still in the the midwest and coast states. Boy, times have changed.

Nothing against Nebraska, but that Alabama team was much better than they showed that night. This was one of Bryant's last quick but small offensive lines; and we beat great USC, LSU, and Auburn teams that season. Nebraska beat LSU 17-12 to win the title the previous year, and this game should have been much closer even if Nebraska was the more physical team. Let me count the mistakes: 1) Bad punt snap deep in our territory, turnover. 2) Interference call in end zone (barely bumped him), putting ball on 1 yr line. 3) Punt return for TD after missed tackle. 4) Fumble on our own 3 yd line. 5) We throw interception on short pass to end zone. 6) Neb interception and run back to 3 yr line. Neb was just better. Could Bama have beat this Husker team? Minus those errors and a little luck possibly. I just regret that this team that "brought Bama back" to national prominence played so badly on this national stage. I do think maybe this game led Bryant to recruit bigger players, which led to three more national titles (plus that disputed '77 title) in the 1970's. Counting this game, Bama was in six bowl games in the 1970's that had national title implications. Which is remarkable. Will always love this '71 team. But don't all 10 year olds love their 11-1 teams? 4)

Definitely a tough loss and bad performance for Alabama. Besides the 24-24 tie with OU the previous year, this was the 4th straight bowl vs a Big 8 school and 3/4 were blowouts. OU and Nebraska had speed at the skill positions, but size in the lines, which really has become the blueprint for major college football even today. But glad you don't discount the importance of the 1971 Alabama team. The first to start an African American, the first Wishbone team, and the first to play for the National Championship since 1965. It may have been the most important year in Bear Bryant's coaching career.

So your saying the great Bear Byrant didn't have his team ready to play hence the mistakes? The talent level on those two teams was vastly different hence the knock down.

That was a fine Alabama team...and they did make some mistakes. But that 1971 Nebraska team was voted the greatest college team of all time during the 150th year of college ball in 2019.

Ed Wong: I would say that Bama’s 2020 team is the greatest team in college football history. They were the most dominant, went 13-0 on their way to the championship. I think they were slightly better than 2019 LSU tigers who were very impressive. LSU has close games with Texas, Auburn and Alabama. Bama only had one close game with Florida in the SEC championship game during the 2020 season. LSU won more games in 2019 went 15-0. But they had a 3 cupcakes on their schedule. Alabama played a full SEC schedule in 2020 so no cupcakes. Just an opinion from an Auburn tiger fan.

@@virgildailey1970 It's obviously impossible to compare the great old Army teams and the Mad Magicians of the 40s and MSU/Notre Dame/TOSU in the 60s and this Nebraska team and the great Miami dynasties and Nebraska in the 90s and Bama/LSU these days. But that's where the fun comes in.

@@tomshea8382: Today’s teams would beat the crap out of the 40’s, 50’s, and 60’s teams. Wide receivers are faster, running backs are bigger, offensive and defensive lineman are bigger. Those old teams would be out manned and over powered. Lineman back then were in the 180-220 pound range. That’s a running back/corner back size today. Those lineman couldn’t withstand the bull rush from the average 300-330 pound lineman of today. Linebackers of today 230-250 pound range with the speed of a running back. It would be no contest. Those teams were good for their time. But football has evolved since then. Players are bigger and faster. Rules have changed. I still say Bama’s 2020 team would beat anybody. Hands down, no contest.
