Phil Bennett must have been the quickest goal kicker in international rugby. About 5 to 10 seconds between placing the ball and striking. The modern game should take lessons from the past.

Watch Naas Botha. Similar modus operandi: took the ball, placed it, and kicked. This delayed kicking process (until the shot clock was introduced in recent times), was brought on by the Aussies. The kicker first used to dry the ball, drink a sip of water, chat to his mates, take his time placing the ball, and then kick. Took 3 minutes or more. Gamesmanship more than anything.

Great game and raucous atmosphere. I forgot how fast the scrums and goal kicks were taken compared to today! Surprised Wales didn't go for a line out with 2 minutes to go. Great to see Bennett and Bevan showing their skills. Mystery why the JPR try was disallowed- no hint of double movement

New Zealanders always thought of Cardiff Arms as one of the great rugby grounds. When my parents visited Cardiff in 1980, my father said the highlight of the holiday was being allowed by the groundsman to walk out on to the playing field. The Millennium Stadium doesn’t have the same atmosphere as the old park.

Correct. I'm from Kensington and Chelsea in London. Lived in Cardiff most of my life. Left soon after BREXIT vote and now live in Alanya region, of the beautiful Med Sea climate. With 324 sunny days a year. Currently about 24c (9th Nov 2022) and what's rain please? Heaven for a Brit. Cheap as chips to live here. Products 65% less than in UK. My last electric bill for October was £15.85. Water was £6.73. Don't need gas. I have an apt overlooking the Med Sea for only £400 a month. Ciggies are £1.40 a pack of 20, I don't smoke but it's a good gauge for prices etc. As a neutral I'd say Going was BETTER than Edwards. That Bennett grew into the 10 shirt, after the retirement at 27, of the mercurial Barry John. That Bennett was shit scared of Kirkpatrick. That Earl Kirton was the best 10 I've seen in a AB shirt. (I was very young and he was the reason I took notice of Rugby.) 15. Cullen. 14. Bryan Williams. 13. Too many. 12. Same as 13 😅👈 11. Lomu. 10. Kirton. 9. Going. 1 2 and 3....again too many. 4. Meads. 5. Too many again. 6. Kirkpatrick 7. Mourie. 8. Zinzan. LOCALS CALLED IT THE ARMS PARK. 🏴󠁧󠁢󠁷󠁬󠁳󠁿 Tbh it's slightly too hot in July and most of it comes from Syria on an easterly. 40 to 46c. But I'm acclimatised and go for a swim from 6am to 11am when it's reasonably 28c peak. The rest of the time of the year, the wind if any and light, comes from the South or South West. This was filmed early May by a Brit guy. Even then it was hot, unusually for May, at around 33c plus or minus either way. 324 Sunny days a year. Jan is about 12-14c and rains a few days only. Feb is the worst at 8-12c and rains like the tropics for three weeks but not incessantly. March to April starts to get warm again. 18 ascending steadily to 25. May averages about 29c this year hotter. June is hotter this year than last. 32-37 July August last year was 38-46. This just a tad less. Sept to December averages about 25 to 21 sliding scale. Lots of ladies from Eastern and Western Europe. Scandinavian. African. Asian. Australian. English language is the norm. Second vid is from a drone a few months back. I remember it well, but only from the TV. Statement of the obvious to any Welshmen, but it was only a month earlier that Llanelli had beaten the All Bllacks, a famous result, so much was expected of Wales. Looking at these highlights, it doesn't look as though Gareth Edwards had one of his greatest games, I only really remember him playing outstandingly nearly all the time. Gerald Davies's side step was a thing of beauty.

The late John Drake (ex-AB in the 80s) and Sky rugby commentator wrote a very good article in a local NZ newspaper many years ago in relation to this match. AB lock Peter Whiting told him of the excruciating pain he suffered in his back due to 17 stone prop Keith Murdoch sitting on his back through the power scrumming of the Welsh front row in the 2nd half. Murdoch was a powerful man but British rugby took scrumming to a new level in the early 70s using science and it showed in this match. Perhaps a draw would have been a fair result had Bennett kicked that last minute penalty.

This was Wales' weakest season of the 70s, with 2 defeats in the 5 nations. Barry John had just retired. NZ didn't play Wales' grand slam and unbeaten 5 nations teams of the 70s, but had 2 controversial and narrow wins. NZ had a losing record v France, who only beat Wales 3 out of 10 in the decade, as well as to South Africa, and lost at home to England who Wales regularly thrashed. Wales had the best results in the 70s overall, and certainly till the summer of 78 when Edwards, Bennett and Gerald Davies retired and the decline started.

J.P.R. Williams disallowed try looked fine to me. You're not allowed to crawl which he didn't do. He wasn't properly tackled he just fell and slid and reached out which is perfectly legal. But the ref called it that's rugby for you. Not complaining it was a great game maybe Wales should have gone for a try at the end instead of kicking points. It's a shame Barry John didn't play in this game though he retired just a few weeks before

This NZ team was an almost complete rebuild from the ageing and decaying team that fell apart in 1970/1. This was an absurd and embarrassing loss for Wales if they really had any players worthy of being called immortals. NZ shot themselves in the foot with what you term cynicism, what possible advantage did they gain? Wales too soft up front and dominated by the better halves pairing

Why do people consider the Welsh rugby team in the 70s among the 'greatest' teams in the sport when they struggled to beat the likes of NZ and SA. Its become more of a myth. Even the Welsh stil think this team was one of the greatest of all time. Just delusional. You are not the greatest till you beat the best.
@leemorgan8478
@leemorgan8478 10 жыл бұрын
Well you're so wrong there they hammered Australia & Drew against S.Africa & against NZ back then they were 50/50 games really it could of gone either way a disallowed try in 1974 which was a try could have clinched victory for us & Haden cheating in 1978 cost us victory . They were the best in Europe beating England regularly & if I'am right England had a dreadful team then but still managed to beat the blacks crazy in it . England had a good team from about 1990 - 2003 & they were good while we were in the doldrums it's just the way things are .
@thelittlejuicer
@thelittlejuicer 10 жыл бұрын
Just watched the highlights and in my opinion Wales were cheated of victory in 1972 also. In almost any era JPRs try would have been awarded and if there was a half-decent referee at least three NZ players would have been yellow carded (if there was that option) for cynical professional fouls that prevented possible scores. NZ were the original professional rugby cheats, closely followed by SA, Australia & England. Saying Wales haven't beaten NZ since 1953 is a joke because if there was any justice in the world we would have recorded victories in 1972, 1978 and 2004. We were cheated by very dubious referees in all three games. In 1972 the penalties awarded against Wales at scrum were an absolute joke. Where is Murdoch now? The psychopath is hidden out in the Australian bush since 1972, it's a shame he wasn't joined there by the other six or seven Psychopaths who got away with murder in that NZ squad!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

 Don't forget Llanelli beat the AB's in 72 - they had around 9 Welsh players in the squad. But to be fair NZ were on tour and it was tough in those days while touring. No wonder International Teams don't do that anymore - except the Lions

You only have to look at the AB midfield in this match to see why Burgess and Going were kicking all game! Hales was actually a decent attacking player when given the chance but test footie back then, aside from rare occasions, was an exercise in keeping errors as low as possible! Parkinson was a tough defender but limited on attack. It was a pity they took this approach as the team was chock full of outstanding wingers and the hugely promising Bruce Robertson as a new center.
