Ray sounds and looks excellent here. The effects of his long career would later emerge, but for now he is witty and alert. He thinks of himself as an entertainer, not a former boxer. He does mix up his Joeys--his career ended vs. Joey Archer not Joey Giardello, whom he fought a couple of years earlier, but no big deal. Great to see him.

I read somewhere they Cus D’Mato didn’t rate Sugar Ray as the best ever. He said he was too focused on offence to worry about defence, would get hit a lot and cut, so wasn’t good enough defensively to tick that box.

The greatest, could do it all. great chin, great offence and defence, one punch knock out power, could fight going forward or on back foot, southpaw or orthodox. Could beat an opponent in so many ways. The phrase PP4 greatest was created for him and he still tops the list.
