dodge started adding electronic ignition in '72 about mid year. you can update trucks all the way back to the 50's with the electronic system. i did it on my '58 W200 which had the 318 Polysphere. makes life so much more simple!
@HowardJrFord6 жыл бұрын
Right. I was going to say that before I saw your post. Some Imperials had electronic ignition in 71, by 73 all chrysler products had it.
@tenaxxband6 жыл бұрын
it was a pretty reliable system, and a big upgrade from points. in the 6 cyl. you can add a Petronix kit, which basically does the same thing. i'm looking into one for my 24V M37.
@HowardJrFord6 жыл бұрын
Absolutely, chrysler's electronic ignition system was stone reliable. My 78 New Yorker still has the original module and magnetic pickup.

Well done, it is very satisfying to get something running that has been more or less thrown away. I feel as though we will be the last generation doing stuff like this. I cant invision someone 50 years from now trying to start a 2010 Impala that had been sitting for 25 or more years.

correct me if i am wrong but that carb is 800 cfm total and unless you go past half throttle it runs only on the front two barrels.. great video and my dad had a 73 d-200 for 18 years with a 225 slant 6 in loved that truck . i later got it and put a 318 in it and drove it for about 5 more years love the old stuff.. old stuff was built to last.
@jonathanw49427 жыл бұрын
You can look through the primaries and tell if it is a 750 or 800 CFM. The secondaries are the same on both, so it makes a difference at lower RPM's also when you just running on the primaries. This is to much carb for this engine and needs something a little smaller. I done a lot of dyno testing when I tractor pulled and on a gasoline engine, as soon as you seen black smoke, HP dropped. A lean engine makes much more power, but can get you in trouble with cylinder heat and melt down a piston if your not careful.

I think Chrysler starting using electronic ignitions in 72. Runs good for a 44 year old engine. Your problem may have been a poor ground in the ignition it was all rusted where it connects in the engine bay. Nice score, good vid. TFS

the spark box on the side of the distributor on an e150 is a mother to change. My dad is in a wheelchair also. he had a 1991 e150. Good runner till it rotted out but when ya had to turn a wrench (witch was not often) it was always a headache and a half.

My truck was this one's twin, in that it was a Fargo, and the box had a wood and steel floor. The wood sections were held in place with steel strips. Looked good, until it started to rust and wear. Same engine, ( I think ) at least my truck had a 318 with a four speed manual. What a granny low that one had !

Beautiful 318 brought back to life. I have owned dozens of those and all of them still ran fine after rust ended up killing the vehicle. I like how all of these car makers brag now days about how '''reliable' they are. I will take these old Ford, Dodges, and Chevys over them any day. Sitting for years then running again is what reliable really is.

@paulkirkland15357 жыл бұрын
Roland Anderson:That carb is definitely from a Buick V8. You know that by the design of the accelerator linkage. Each GM division had a different style of the accelerator linkage. As Jonathan said the fuel line inlet housing on this carb is Buick, Olds & Pontiac. On Cadillac and Chevs the the housing with the fuel line is sideways. Hope this helps you to ID them correctly. I am a former GM mechanic.

The displacement ID numbers are stamped on the front of the block. Under the left head. Most likely it's a 318. If it's a 360, you can bet somebody put it in it. These trucks came with slant 6's and 318's as standard.

On almost all older electronic ignitions what goes bad is the capacitors. And they act just as yours did. They get weak as they leak current with use once they go bad. So it goes down hill as you try to make them work ...

72 the first year electronic ignition. The ignition box needs a good ground to firewall. I would be willing to bet that all it was(rusty) . the steel rotor (lack of proper terminology) at the pickup in the distributor is supposed to be rough or serrated (again wrong word) I believe it gives it more surface area for spark. a 360 dodge will have an extra weight on the harmonic balancer.

I'm really enjoying your videos Jonathan, thanks for making them. Possibly not the same thing but ballast resisters, our early Fords, Mk1 Cortina and HA Viva Vauxhalls had them to aid starting. They used a 6v coil on a 12v system. On startup they were wired direct, but once started they ran through the resistor. So 2 hot wires, one for start and one for run. Caught out twice by the blasted things lol.

My parents also bought mopars when I was a kid. Dad always has a spare voltage regulator, ballast resistor, a coil and the electronic ignition box just in case. That is the beauty of these old classics. You could prepare for a part to fail before it happened and get going again. With pre '80 vehicles I could always find a way to make it home where newer vehicles have left me needing a friend to pick me up. :) Great vids man, keep saving these lovely relics!

i had a ballast resistor coil fail on the lift at the muffler shop. the "mechanic" couldn't figure it out. i was 16 and had just started working on cars, so while he went inside to get something i grabbed my manual, diagnosed the problem and installed the spare ballast resistor i had in the glovebox. the guy came back out and was amazed it was running. he told me i should be a mechanic. i told him he probably shouldn't!
