This was one of my most favorite cars growing up, my dad called it “the poor mans vette”. Great little car.

More like Corvettes were the small rich penis person Opel GT, they were made 4 years before the corvette looked anything close and were 1,000,000 times more reliable

Wow a blast from the past. These were great little cars. I worked on these back in the 1970s at the dealership. I still have the special tool needed to get the top bell housing bolts out in order to pull the transmission. Thanks for sharing this nice Opel GT

In 1970 I was looking for a new car, the salesman talked me out of buying a GT because the payments would be $103 a month for 36 months. He sold me an Opel Kadet at $65 a month for 36 months instead. I wish I hadn't listened to him!!

Good to see one of these again, They called them the Baby Vette where I lived and knew a couple guys who owned them. They were fun little cars, with the 4 speed manual transmission. I always liked the body style of course, but the Datsun 240z had the market in this area at that time.

I have a soft spot for these. The 1.9 L engine was cam-in-head. It makes a very pleasant sound.

In '72 my mom leased a new silver Opel GT for $75/mo. She let me take over the lease in '74 when I was 19. I loved that car! Sadly I totalled it a year later.

One of my first cars was a cool little white '72 1900 GT with a 4 speed. They were unit-body so they didn't rattle, but it burnt points and vapor locked constantly. I was just a broke teenager at the time and still learning, but if it was nowadays I would sort that out without too much trouble. I remember girls telling me "I had a cute car" so that was pretty cool. I ended up getting a white/black 1974 Opel Manta Rallye 1900/4 speed and I never had any problems with that car until I crashed it, TBH I thought it handled better than the GT did....

I had a 71 purchased brand new for $3333. Great car. Extremely low aerodynamic drag coefficent. It will run 100 mph for hours at a time. I know !!

Hello Jeff , another flashback from back in the day . In the early seventies I fixed one of those , it was an olive green in color and the owner was a blonde amazon that I knew from high school days . The story goes that a dump truck stopped in front of her and she didn't ! [ LAUGHS ] She drove under the truck almost to the windshield , fortunately since the GT was so low it just put some creases in the hood and headlight doors . I guess she was just having one of those famous blonde moments ! [ MORE LAUGHS ] Anyway thanks for another memory from back in time. As always take care . Larry .

Actually they are quite fast - Dad got his (tuned with electronic ignition) up to 140mph on a straight. The pinion failed on this run, dropping the drive shaft at the differential. I helped him swap-in Manta rear-end and it lost this insane top-end, BUT it climbed to its new top-end faster. Dad taught me to drive in this car.

FLASHBACK: I can remember in my junior high social studies class back in about 1973 looking out the window and saw a orange opal drive-by, great memory, great car! I really need to make an effort to come up and look at those cars, would love to take one home! Does the car have air-conditioning ? Thank you for your videos!

1.1L SR engine had 67 HP while the 1.9L engine was 102 HP, but by 1973 they were 90 HP .

Almost died in one back in 1970. Pontiac hit us in the rear and the car folded up like cardboard. It was a looker for sure and the original color on the one I was in was also yellow.

Never heard of those, probably a fun little car and I'm assuming that engine can be upgraded for more power. Hey Jeff, there's a burgundy 92 Roadmaster I saw on CCC's website. Could you possibly get a video on it if it's in a good location?
@mynameis90575 жыл бұрын
Needs a nasty small block. Few upgrades and then you've got yourself a sweet little rocket ship there.▪☆☆☆▪
@RamblinAround5 жыл бұрын
It would be a blast with a small block in it. That was definitely my first thought.

Opal had and still has connections with GM so it's hard not to see the influences...I think they were the opponent to the Ford Capri in Europe...Be a good candidate for a Turbo Ecotec 4 banga from an Opel Astra I recon..

this was designed before the shark vette though
@ariegt4 жыл бұрын
@oliverthecat666 No the real designer is Erhard Schnell , but after Erhards drawings were on the table Mckitchen helped him further to work everything out
@ariegt4 жыл бұрын
@oliverthecat666 i am not punching ? Just shared some facts and took your right answer into that but only more detailed. If you can't take this , just look your car videos but don't reply
@ariegt4 жыл бұрын
@oliverthecat666 and you are always right i guess... in 1962 Erhard Schnell (RIP) drawed the GT looking at the XP-833 project or pontiac banshee , even the dash cluster looks the same. Mckitchen helped in the designers devision at Opel. in 1964 GM started to design the Corvette c3 shark nose. Please don't shout something because a design is smaller and is a lookalike. The Vette has the looks of the GT and the GT is daddy of the C3 Vette. And that's final

I'm a huge fan of classic European cars, as long as they're rwd, and I think the GT is a beautifully designed car, which indeed looks like a baby C3. One of the reasons I like euro classics (for me domestics) more than good ol' Americans, is size, in fact as much as I love old yanks, I really do, some are just too big for the way I live cars, but this one has the opposite problem, it's way too small, they should have made it the same size as their flagship Rekord, I think it would have sold much much better, particularly in te US, as among other things they could have comfortably shoved in a bigger I6 or even a small V8, but they wanted to compete in the "British style" sports car so they went that way, and fair enough, it's not like every car has to be built for me! 😅

Opel is the same as G.M. in Germany. So a lot of parts interchange.
