I once parted out an '81 Trans Am that had "This car protected by Smith and Wesson" on it. LOL. Here we go, VIN is P for Fury (C body), H for high price class, 23 for two door hardtop, K for 360 with 2 barrel, 3 for 1973 model year, D for Belvidere, Illinois assembly and the rest is the production sequence. Yes, I'll agree on repainting, you can see where they taped over the certification label. The other label on the jamb is the tire inflation pressure decal. You can make out part of it. Lots of good parts on this one, that's for sure. Merry Christmas.....

@@79tazman Based on the VIN (and what's under the hood), it appears to have its' original 360 V8 VIN code "K" 2 barrel engine. By 1973, there were often "economy" versions of the V8 engines for fuel economy. 1973 was the year of the first Arab oil embargo and large cars were losing favor a bit.

My parents had a 1972 Fury which was bought a year after I was born in '71. My parents got rid of a 1963 Sport Fury 318 that my Dad bought new and had laid up for a year when he was on active duty with the Army (after that, he was in the National Guard reserves for years). My father learned how to fix cars back then because my mom was telling him that "we should be spending the money on tune-ups to save for a house". My dad agreed, went to Sears or Kmart, bought some tools (at Sears) and some books on how to fix cars. He then was off and running and took a liking to it. They were only married 2.5 years when they bought our house in 1968. The Fury got traded in 1974 when my mother chipped the flywheel by accident trying to start it with the engine running. Dealer didn't care and we got a 1974 Charger which we kept until 1979. By then, we were a GM family.

My cousin's grandfather bought a 73 Fury III 2 dr new in 74, black on white. The car was loaded. A/C, p/s, pdisc, hd suspension, tilt, cruise, AM stereo, and yes, the 360 in 2bbl form. NO STUPID VINYL ROOF. When my cousin got it in the late 80s, he hot rodded the 360, added a shift kit to the 727, had the factory paint buffed out, and drove the devil out of it. It was a really nice car and he had it several yrs. BTW, those cars usually had the 9 1/4 rear end with the 360 and up engines. Not a bad piece at all with upgraded bearings. When set up right, they last a long time and put up with abuse. 10 bolt covers are 8 1/4. 12 bolt covers are 9 1/4. There should be a metal tag on each to tell the ratio, just a 2 digit number.

I had this car when I started driving in 1977. It’s a 1973 Fury III Special. Only 3000 of them were built. Fast as hell. 26 gallon gas tank. Took forever to fill when the US went to selling gas by the liter !! The carpet was a furry shag. Paisley seats. It was like a tank. Mine got crazy bad gas mileage. 7 mpg..I could go only 100 miles on a tank in Summer running AC and 200 in the winter. I ran out of gas one time at 2am. Had to try and find a phone to call my Dad. He asked how many miles I had on the tank….206! It was my favorite car for a long time. Oh and the paint was brown metallic. That wasn’t added!!

I believe they were also used in the NYPD (in four door versions) as radio patrol cars. Back then a lot of Chrysler police units throughout the nation. They were cheap, easy to fix and parts interchanged easily. By the time 1989 rolled around, Chrysler left the market and GM took over as the police car of choice, along with the Crown Victoria. Today in NYC, we have Impalas, Fusions and Explorers as NYPD vehicles among others.

I didn't really like anything past the 71 Furys because they started getting really bulky and kinda bulbous and the engines they offered were gas guzzlers. I had a 1970 Fury and it was not bulky and it was pretty lightweight compared to anything past 72. But this is a pretty good example and it's a shame that somebody let it get to this point. I had a 78 Trailduster that came with the same engine and drivetrain as this Fury and I could never get anything better than 12-14 mpg. It just drank gasoline and wasn't economical. However saying that with the positraction and the bulletproof transmission it had I could pretty much go anywhere I needed to in S/Louisiana and that is saying something. I had some 12" wide BF Goodrich Radial T/As on it in all terrain grip and once you lowered the tire pressure down to about 16lbs it was a grip monster. I went in places that any other 4 wheelers could not or would not go. It had a Fiberglass top you could remove and that was fun when it was off-instant convertible, just had to be a good day. Oh the old Mopars I use to have.
