The Schwinn Varsity Sport was one of Schwinn's "Junior Lightweight Bikes", even though it was heavy by today's standards, weighing 36 pounds. It has the look of the Schwinn Varsity, but scaled down in size. This particular bike was made in Chicago in 1973 and sold in the Schwinn Catalog of that year for $102.95. In the catalog description it features "a carbon steel frame, narrower handlebars, a 5 1/2" crank, dual position caliper brake levers and Schwinn Twin Stik shifters". The paint color is Lemon Yellow.
This bike was donated to our local Bike Kitchen in February 2022. The bike is in good condition. It looks like someone had cleaned and serviced in bike in the past few years. The head tube badge and stickers have been removed, as though it was being prepared for painting. The handlebar tape was replaced with thick foam.
This week we began working on the bike by removing the handlebar tape and servicing the head tube. We took apart the bottom bracket removed the wheels and chain. We touched-up the paint on the front fork (which had been painted black, not its' original color). The headtube and bottom bracket have their original made in Chicago caged bearings. It has a one piece crank. The two chain rings are in very good condition.
