I keep jumping back and forth on this car. Work underneath, engine bay, dash, back under it... So it is time to make a plan. I decided to finish the dash and what is beneath and only then move to something else.

Thanks for this great, instructive video, Elin. Saved me time and frustration in seeing how the metal dash and dash pad are assembled!

Thank you Elin. One of the best TR6 restoration series I've seen ... and I've watched many! I purchased a '69 TR6 in 1969 but regretfully sold it a couple years later. Giving away my age lol. A few years ago I entered my second childhood and purchased a 1971 TR6 "daily driver". It was restored in the late 90's and has a very good body, frame and engine. Unfortunately the previous owner didn't keep up with the mechanical maintenance and consequently it sat unused for six years. I knew there would be a lot of parts to replace or rebuild and I have. Pretty much anything with a seal leaked. Complete new brake system and clutch cylinders just to name a few. I knew what I was getting into and I have no regrets. So far I've been able to do everything myself and videos like this have certainly helped make that possible. This part of your series (under the dash) is particularly timely. This spring my heater core sprung a leak. I've been driving it with the core bypassed since then. I just received a new core and it's time to go "Under the dash". I intended to look at a lot of other things while under there and this video will be priceless in pinpointing what and where to look. I also purchased a new plastic transmission tunnel to be replaced while things are opened up under there. I love your common sense approach. Please keep up the good work.

The original screws that held the ignition switch/steering lock were special shear bolts. They had a hex head on them which sheared off leaving a rounded head when the correct torque was reached. This was done to make it hard for a thief to remove the steering lock. The fitted shear bolts had to be drilled out if you wanted to remove the steering lock.

those screws 2 for the ignition switch are special shear bolts . The heads break off when the correct torque is reached. After correct installation you will have the 2 bolts shouldered holding the ignition without their hex heads. The ignition is now tamper proofed to eliminate theft issues of the ignition/car

Looking great ...I'm glad you put the dash pad on before you put the wood in with all the gauges. Did you put the tubing in for the squirters? 😎
@RustyBeauties
@RustyBeauties 6 жыл бұрын
LOL, you didn't mention that when you called me live :) I can still install the tubing through the vent on the sail panel.

I bought my 74 without any keys. I need to figure out how to remove that little pad around the ignition switch so I can get the lock out and get a key made.

One quite unusual thing I've noticed about the TR6 since it was produced back in the 70's. The cockpit has shrunk! I don't recall it being so difficult to get in and out of or for my body to fit into back in the day. It also appears my feet have grown. Anyone who's ever driven a TR6 will know what I'm talking about lol.

Hi Elin. Quick question for ya as I'm about to install my dash top as well. I noticed you didn't use any adhesive under the pad as you installed the dash top. Would you recommend using one, or, was the straight installation support enough to provide a tight, nice, fit? Thanks for the help :)

Flat section on steering column shaft might be to enable adjustment of steering wheel as regards arm length
@RustyBeauties
@RustyBeauties 6 жыл бұрын
Yeah, and also to allow the shaft to "shrink" in case of an accident. There are two spacers that are designed to overlap eachother in case of an impact and the flat areas of the shaft slide into each other.

I have no experiences of TRs at all but I suspect its like other BMC / BL cars. Every car I have rebuilt I have always put the wiring loom in first after painting and rubber bungs fitted. A good tip is to keep the loom warm for a day or two before fitting as you can then flex it into a better fit.

Since I didn't have the grommets I didn't want to wait. I eventually got them and I didn't have too many issues running the harness. It worked just fine!

I am not familiar with Canadian regs but in the UK that steering lock / ignition bracket would have 'Shearlock' bolts to clamp it to the steering column to stop thieves removing the steering lock as the heads literally shear off at a certain torque www.minimine.co.uk/steering-an/69-steering-lock-shear-bolt.html And that ignition lock is similar to my '78 Mini 1000 albeit Left Handed. Pretty much standard fitment on all BL cars of that decade

Sorry should have added the Part Number for the two shear bolts for the ignition lock is 51K4001 (M8 x 19 mm or 3/4"). There should also be two to mount the column itself to the body (or 'H' frame?) Part Number 51K4002 (5/16"UNF bolts 7/8"long thread, 37 mm or 1 1/2" overall length)

Elin, Do you remember our conversation about WD40 not being a penetrant? Well I was wrong. Check out this video by a fellow KZbinr where he does a fairly scientific study into the effectiveness of WD40, PB Blaster, and a couple of other penetrant oils. Pretty interesting. I won't tell you who won. I'll let it be a surprise. Check it out. kzbin.info/www/bejne/roaooJVopKZ-jNU
