R.I.P. Shawn Kirk. Your courage and selflessness is greatly appreciated. Shawn is from my favorite state that I visit twice a year. Sean really, quite impressively, kept that bike up. Beautiful shade of green that it has. Gotta love those beautiful vintage Yamaha 2 strokes. Brother, I just wanted to tell you and commend you on the extra help you give to military vets and their children, in your willingness to take their bikes on to restore them, even when you aren't selling them, like the CR 500, you're giving back to Shawn's son, when you're working on a sea of bikes. That's awesome that you make that special exception for them. They most certainly earned it, putting their lives on the line, so people like You and Myself can enjoy the many freedoms that our beautiful country gives us. I also love the way that you raised your kids to be proud of our country, and the respect that you instilled in them for all 4 branches of our military. If everybody else raised their kids the way you have, our current society, and the times we live in would be so much better. Props to you, brother. My deceased parents would love you to death, and have a great deal of respect for you. No doubt in my mind that your parents were awesome and amazing people. You, Your deceased Father, and My deceased Father like many of the same things, and my Dad would love your work ethic, which is most impress. Many props to you, Bro. ❤

I have a restored DT3 - honestly, better than this one. All DT3's had turn signals and passenger pegs - missing on this one. The color was "Competition Green". The seat covers with the Yamaha logo are readily available. All in all, this is a really nice DT3. Great job by Kaplan Cycles. Hope they got a good price for it.

Great condition. Those oil injected 2-stroke bikes never load up. I regretted removing the oil injection from my 1971 AT1 and all the other mods I did like removing the electric starter making the bike finicky. My next bike was a 1972 250 DT2 and I left it stock except removing the lights. The 250 always ran like a top. Bulletproof motor.

My high school buddy had one of these in his basement that his father rode from Tennessee to California and back. I rode it when I was 14 in some big fields and on the paved state highway as well as gravel roads. It scared me to death. It has been bored out because it lost compression over the years. They also had an early 70's Suzuki TC (I think) 125. It had 4 gears but it had high and low on the side of the case. Both are still at his mom's and still in perfect condition. I wish I had them both myself. Thanks for sharing, it brings back great memories for me. (PS I was 14 in 1996)

Bought one new in 73, Cahills of Tampa $939.00 new. Yes the first thing I did was a black fork brace & yellow flex fender. Great bike for hill climbs ,jumping & on the road. Mine would hit 80 mph.

That will probably get 5-8 times the more than 1000$ original cost. Quite an investment!

I had that exact same bike I bought in my early teens around 1982ish. Could never afford a new bike. Always around 10 years old. I wanted it to look like all my buddies YZ's and RM's so I stripped it down totally, repainted the frame. Painted the gas tank yellow, pin striped it, got yellow plastic fenders and new more modern handle bar & grips. Basically destroyed an awesome motorcycle. It's tough being a poor kid. 🤣🤣🤣 It's a standing Joke between me and my brother.....don't DT 250 it! 😂 Reply

QUESTION FOR KAPLAN AMERICA (if anyone can remember): Kenny mentioned in the Work Order that a #145 main jet had been installed. The original spec for this bike lists a #160 main jet. Your bike seems to run perfectly. Any reason that anyone can remember as to why a #145 was installed?? I always thought that you had to go larger on these vintage bikes to make up for the ethanol additive. Any answer would be appreciated.

Long time CT3 owner here. They are nice bikes but one thing to bear in mind, parts can be next to impossible if you want to keep it original and stock. Anybody have a 6 volt headlight or front and back metal fenders?

WHAT was WRONG with those people, stripping all the heavy stuff off their bikes so they could go faster in the dirt. And full disclosure, when I was a lucky duck with a new Sting-Ray bike for my eighth birthday, one of the first things I did was strip the fenders. I guess something was wrong with me, too. 😀

I bought one new just like that, paid cash as a 16 yr old,I was so proud. That fender was off in a minute,I had a fork brace & yellow flex fender put on it. I love that one as is. Memories!!

@@richardmorris7063 Good memories, indeed! And in '76 when I was a senior at a military high school in West Germany, with an after-school job at the commissary for motorcycle money, I remember installing a new mail-order Preston Petty plastic front fender on my used Harley SX-175, anything to make it a little lighter, lol.
