Well.... Starter is absolutely a no go! I originally planned on replacing the engine and then was going to keep this one.. Well anyways after this I plan on just changing the engine haha! Big thank you to the subscriber who mentioned trying to get this thing to work.
And full floor pans came in!!!! They are so nice and wow they are going to make the car totally look better. So excited. I got them from BluntTech, can't recommend them enough!
Something exciting is coming to the shop tomorrow, I can't wait to share it with you all!
As always thank you so much for the support, guidance and encouragement while on this journey. I really appreciate it all!

If you take the old starter in for a core the new one won't cost as much. The new pans are going to look nice.

You’ll come to love that m10 engine if you decide to keep it. You already have a really good carburettor as the American market got the weber 32/36 rather than the solex pdsi tbe Europeans got. You can add a 292 schrick cam. Maybe Weber 40’s carbs. You can even add a supercharger using a second hand unit and a kit for it. A v8 would be cheaper power for the money however. But I really wouldn’t want too much power in this car😬 You can get to 150/200hp and you’ll love it. Look forward to whatever you choose to do :)

I would not get rid of that motor too quick. You have plenty of options. Do realise that those very blocks were used to build F1 motors on, because they proved themselves to be sturdy and able to handle hard use (which led them to a F1 World Driver Championship in1983 for Nelson Piquet in a Brabham BMW).👴🤔 One very important thing though: Let the oil get warm enough before hammering it (Don't bother about coolant temp getting warm enough).👴😊

Haha maybe I will! So many options I get overwhelmed with the best choice

I still think ex-Borgward engineers was mainly responsible for those incredible 1500 4-cylinder blocks than gave up to 1500hp in qualifying form...

Great to see you attempt the starter repair! If you can get a replacement cheap, then that’s nice quick and easy. Otherwise that one will come back to life fairly easily. The big terminal on the starter is to spin the motor. The little one should also be live. That’s to throw out the solenoid. (Which throws out the little cog) The solenoid is the part on the side you started taking off. It has a little piston/bar inside. That should be oiled up. That oil goes gummy. Which is why it’s not operating. Just give it a wipe and put some oil on it. Also you can take the long bolts out of the starter body. There’s a brass bush in either end. That holds tbe armature (google ‘motor armature’ you understand) Put some new engine oil in those brass bushes. Clean up the copper on the end of tbe armature that the motor brush’s touch, with a bit of sand paper. The brush’s should be ok, but check they haven’t worn down to nothing. Bolt back together and (with a wire wheel and black spray can) it’s now fully refurbished!

Just found out about this build - so excited to follow - inspiration for my '73 build. I admire your attempts to rejuvenate the starter. I have a working one you can have if you have a way to get it from eastern MA. I will say a "modern" starter is about half the weight and cranks much better. I replaced with Bosch SR441X.

Probably a good idea to see if you can get a factory workshop manual [preferred] or an aftermarket repair & service manual. If you cant find either online, then make eBay your friend. Either of these will help to make your life easier, ......or at least 'less difficult'

So, it looks you guys are coming from hot rods to old BMWs like me, if you want a good reman. motor, Ronin Works in Fullerton CA is a pretty good source for motor rebuild stuff, for just about anything else, Erik at Coupe King in Wilmington, CA is an awesome resource for these cars. Great guy too.

your kid is awesome and i love how he likes being involved. glad to see you restoring (and learning on) such a cool car. also, please please no flathead in this! one idea would be the gm (oldsmobile) quad four. classic offy racing look but modern, reliable. should be a few used in the junk yards.

He absolutely loves to be out in the shop! It’s so sweet. Yeah I don’t think I’ll do a Flathead, I feel like they are better suited in other kinds of cars. I originally wanted this build to be a bit “crazy” but thinking much differently now

@@KellyBuilds i appreciate your creativity. plus, hubby sounds like he want to get rid of the banger in his new car. as much as i appreciate flatties they are heavy as heck and would make your '02 handle like crap. your bmw engine stock makes more power. anyway, imo i'd look around online and see what swaps people do. bmw rebuilds are costly but whatever you do it will be neat.

Could you put a wrench and try and turn the engine to see if it is frozen. If it's not moving or marvel mystery oil in each of the cylinders where the spark plugs go in.

@@KellyBuilds A small impact driver should help out. The motor turns but is slowed down because of dirt, rust and grime from years of use and setting around. I taught Auto Mechanics for 27 years and have rebuilt many starters worse that yours. At least your turns.

Do your research regarding the starter. It looks to me the motor may be ok but solenoid is bad.Search for solenoid alone. If you decide to replace the whole unit there is a later model Bosch starter that will work and cost less.
