And boring. Imagine having to shift gears while leaving one hand on the wheel. All the different configurations of engines and ground effects. Definitely not as safe as the new cars, but it gets me on the edge of my seat. The seventies and through the nineties was the best in F1.

This has been said many times, I know, but... In those days, driving an F1 car must have been an absolutely insane challenge. Manual shift, clutch, no automated systems... Mechanical problems were more common, which gave racing an additional element of uncertainty as to the outcome. And the pilots made the difference. Even today, of course, that's how it is too, but in any case, those who ran in these times were true heroes.

This is Jean Denis Deletraz... he wasn't exactly remembered for his speed. He started is brief and forgettable f1 career thanks to money and sponsors. His only f1 gp in 1994 with Larrousse was everything but good. He did'nt qualify. And so started in last place on the grid. Then retired at lap 57 for a mistake but he was already lapped 10 times. I went down that road. I'm also impressive. What is the point of trying to fit all racing types into 1 way of thinking about racing? Racing experiences are all different. Going off up the street with maximum grip is 1 way of experiencing racing.

Some of those cars being passed are literally unrepairable, so they aren't driven as hard as they could be, which is why the cars are passed so easily. After those cars are passed it becomes just like today with little to no passing. These are 50 year old F1 cars.

Like how at 2:31 he downshifts from 5th gear to 2nd before the turn and steps on the gas early causing a quick double correction for the slide... Sign of a very light with a huge engine, responsive car... Anyway, amazing car and driver. Here's a bit of info on the Hesketh specs (mostly made famous by James Hunt who among other things besides calling it "beautiful", praised the extra cockpit's room.... ) 485 bhp, 2,993 cc DOHC dry-sump Cosworth DFV 90-degree V-8 engine with Lucas-metered fuel injection, Hewland FGA/400 five-speed manual transaxle, rack-and-pinion steering, front and rear wishbone independent suspension with coil springs, telescopic dampers, and anti-roll bars, and four-wheel Lockheed four-piston ventilated disc brakes. Weight: 590 kg Wheelbase: 2,570 mm. Thanks for the great post. By the way Monte Carlo looks just about the same today... ;-)

@@afoxwithahat7846 Or maybe it was that Monaco has stretches that resemble an autocross more closely than a Grand Prix and it is necessary to flick the car like that, or at least James found it best to flick the Hesketh like that.

The 1970s era of F1 race cars were amazing... from the barebones race car with no computer technology to the insane designs car companies were coming up with like the Brabham BT46 Fan car to the Tyrell P34 six wheeled race car.. What an awesome decade in F1 and by far the best era driver wise. Those guys were pushing their machines and themselves mentally and physically to the limit, literally willing to sacrifice their lives for a win lol.
