1974 Honda Trail 90 First True Dual Sport Motorcycle

The Honda CT90 “Trail 90” was the first true dual sport motorcycle
It was designed to handle all kinds of terrain, from steep hills to riding through streams and mud.
With 1.4 gallon fuel tanks and an average MPG of about 100 MPG, you can cover some serious ground on a Trail90.
The luggage rack on the rear made the CT90 a practical choice from hunting, farm work, camping, and all sorts of actives that would require some extra gear in a small package.
It was manufactured from 1966 to 1979 following some dealer-specific modifications that were popular in the U.S.
The CT 90 was designed for the trail and the outdoorsmen, but also suited city commuters and those who needed something to get around and work a large property.
The bike was designed to be easy to use on tight steep trails and for hauling gear.
It was also designed to be rugged. The design of the air intake made it so that bike could be pretty much submerged and continue running. The spark-arrestor exhaust made it safe for off-road use.
Early models featured a dual rear sprocket, which the rider would need to swap on the hub and add a chain to use the low gear climbing capabilities of the larger rear sprocket.
Later models included a sub-transmission gear box, that allowed you to make the switch by coming to a stop and flipping the lever.
The CT90 also features an automatic clutch. Shifting through the gears simply requires the foot, and forward motion just requires the throttle. When the bike comes to a stop, it won’t try to move until you give it throttle again, making it ideal for steep, narrow trails.

I was one of the fortunate ones to own one of these gems. I picked up mine used when I needed it the most and it got me all the way through college and hauled me and my stuff wherever I wanted to go. It's a very good memory.

Used to have a 1969 that, thinking that the neighbor had given it to my dad, plus a Super Cub 70 that was in worse wear. Was able to ride the Trail 90 w/o a battery around the neighborhood. Never got the Super Cub 70 running and just used its engine for parts. Did get a Super Cub 70 1984 from a friend. Don't have any of them now but wished I still did.

That was my 1st bike, same vintage, red though.. wish I still had it, unstoppable.. shame the new ones don't have the granny-gear.. that shifting down still f's me up occasionally on normal bikes today (old habits)!

That's a nice little bike. I picked my 74 up some time back for $100. Got a new carb, tubes and tires with other basic maintainance stuff, so l'm right at $300 in it and she is a solid rider. The trail gears really help with ups and downs out here in the Big Bend area. Was gonna name her Orange Crush but decided on Dreamsicle.

I paid 2K for my 78, looks good but even it needed a fair amount of tweaking.. it did come with a Honda 125 the owner was going to install and lots of newer parts for the ct90. Where I live they go for between a thou for a beater to 3K and up. So 100 bucks? Jackpot! 😅

My buddy’s dad had a yellow Trail 90 with a gun scabbard attached to the front fork for hunting. We used it for transportation in Jr. High up until we got our drivers licenses in high school. That thing just ran and ran. We never did anything to it but put gas in it.

That's what I thought also. The high/low gear switch is a great feature on these bikes. Not going to do 90 mph but it will do 15 mph up the side of a sheer cliff
