Best thing... Power steering on those old cj5... you also can check caster on front axle...

Could you share the u-bolt sizes you used for your leaf springs? I can't seem to get a correct answer for years 72-75
@Pitlane3262 жыл бұрын
Chris, sorry for the delay. The front U bolts are 1/2" x 7" overall, except the one on the passager side that clamps around the diffrential, that one is 1/2' longer. The rears are 1/2" x 7-1/2" but looks like 7" would work. I'm sure I have a clip of them in these videos. Hope this helps

Ive read that adding shims to the Back and ensuring that you at least have a 6 degree angle eliminates the problem. I have a 78 CJ5 and are going to try this to see if it gets fixed

I'm installing those now, thicker part of the wedge to the front.

I’m having the same issue on my ‘75 CJ5. Can you elaborate where you installed the shims that fixed it? Other videos I’ve seen use shims to set the caster of the front axle but it sounds like you guys are talking about the rear axle? Thanks

I added power steering to my 1973 CJ5 inline 6 258 alternator on passenger side also.
@Pitlane3262 жыл бұрын
Was that stock having alternator on passager side? As you can see in this video my is on drivers side and manual shows it that way.
@sjwalker56962 жыл бұрын
@@Pitlane326 yes I meant my alternator is on the driver side. And I'm trying to figure out the correct routing for the fuel line going from the pump to tank just trying to bring it back to the original and my exhaust tailpipe mounting bracket at the very end is yours all original I like to try to figure that one out too thank you

@@sjwalker5696 From gas tank, I have hard pipe 1/4"? clipped to frame then transitions to rubber, with filter, over passager side engine mount to manual fuel pump. as seen about 2 min. 15 sec. in this video. The exhaust tail pipe dumps out on drivers side behind rear wheel and mounts to frame above leaf spring next to gas tank. Not sure if any of this is stock, hope this helps

Loocking for how to remove rust from my 1980 jeep ch7?
@royshashibrock39903 жыл бұрын
The gas inlet on the driver's side is reminiscent of pre-70 CJs. Intermediate CJs (72-75) do not have this (I own a 1974 model). Someone must have added it later. I certainly would not want to be sitting immediately over the gas tank in a crash or rollover.
@Pitlane3263 жыл бұрын
Yes i cut it out and added the trim piece, my 72 had this extra tank and was nice to have. Don't think Jeeps have anywhere a gas tank would be safe.

What was the cure ?
@Pitlane3263 жыл бұрын
James, Did not cure, still wanders around 40-45. It steers and handles beautiful until you get up to that speed. Everything that moves has been replaced on the frontend. I know the rear shackles and bushings are shot, maybe the rear movement is causing this. I'm going to rig up a camera and see if anything is moving around on both ends. I have the toe 1/8th" in so that should be very close and noted those dimensions before I started. Don't remember my 1972 doing this, it could be just the characteristics of a Jeep and I'm a sissy.

Sit down on the floor in front of your jeep , grab the frame and shake it hard and you'll notice the pair of 3 inch long shackles will sway left and right , they were intentionally designed this way , short frame needs all the flex it can , I made my own from channel iron , cured the issue
@Pitlane3263 жыл бұрын
After all that was done and needed, the shims between the front leafs and axle fixed the problem.
