1974 V.W. Beetle Maintenance Part 1 Oil Change

For this assembly use both gaskets. 1- Apply a gasket to the top of the sump screen to a clean engine case, 2- Then apply a gasket to the bottom of the clean sump screen. 3- Apply the clean drain cap. The torque is very specific to 5ft lbs on the retention nuts tightened in a cross pattern with the copper washers. No need to use any sealant unless the flanges of the parts are not flat due to over torqueing of the fasteners. Otherwise a very thin layer of clean grease on both sides of each gasket. Careful with the gaskets they are a bit fragile. All of the above has worked well with my "71" Super Beetle. Thanks for the videos!

Great information! I have a '77 Beetle and would like to do simple oil changes (more frequent) in between filter and gasket maintenance with the VW mechanic I go to. Can I ask what your take is on using an oil pump for that purpose? Thanks!

What external oil filter kit did you guys use ? All the kits I see won't work with the stock exhaust for some reason

Wow, 5w30 synthetic oil for such an old car? PS The second gasket is from oil filter..

Thanks for your input. As far as the oil situation I typically use Joe Gibbs racing oil (High Zinc Formula). The oil was supplied by the client and he was insistent on using it.

you did the oil seal wrong there arev2 because they get sandwiched between the strainer.
