Are you freakin' kidding me Dave?!?! I was hoping that just maybe one day you would upscale this classic 1976 ABC Monday Night Baseball game! Watching the game again brings me back to 1976 and being 8 years old sitting in front of the television set and glued to the television screen.

I was 13 years old, in Pittsburgh......but I caught the "Bird Fever".....he was in the AL....and NOT A YANKEE! Remember watching this at my Grandma's house, and calling her to come sit down and watch......Bob " The Gunner" Prince was on National TV.....and he was our long time local announcer. My grandmother avidly followed the Buccos....and couldn't believe what she was watching. And she instantly fell in love with the Bird too. Special Night ,Special Season......Really Special Grandma! And I'll always love the Bird!RIP

Another treat! Amazing restoration of a classic. My intro to MLB was as youngster just moved to a new, big city (Houston) and the Astros radio announcer was Bob Prince. I listened to every game that Summer - and thought this was typical. It wasn’t. Remember the Bird as well that year and this game vaguely. Thanks.

It’s amazing to me that people back then in the 1970’s seemed older. Even the baseball players here, outside of Mark Fidrych (he was just 21), seemed much older than they actually were. Nowadays I regularly see people at 35 - 40 who try to pass off as 20 - 30 years old. A number of ball players today look really young. The guys in this old baseball broadcast looked much older.

It’s funny to hear Prince at the beginning talk about the controversy and lawsuit surrounding then Oakland owner Finley, who desired to trade Rudi, Fingers and Blue to other teams for money. Prince made a good observation in that the teams with more wealth would obtain the other players. Prince died a decade later in the 1980’s. George Steinbrenner would go on to use his power and money to obtain many of the best players, long after they had established their prime and talent on other teams. Big money ruined baseball for me. I’m glad to see someone preserve old baseball tapings like this one, showing old Tiger Stadium.

Well, he tore his rotator cuff midway through his second season. The issue was they were not able to diagnose it as such until 1985 which was five years after he retired. So he was trying to pitch for three and a half years with a torn rotator cuff without knowing it. He wasn’t overused, they just couldn’t figure out why his arm went dead.
@michaelskurski912Ай бұрын
@@greglbennett check out his innings that 1st year and look at his complete games that year then think of how many pitches he threw in those games he had to have averaged at least 110 ptches a start I'd say he was overused

@@michaelskurski912 24 complete games in 29 starts - Koufax and Ryan needed 40 or so starts to hit 26 complete games. Fidrych pitched 255 innings: Ryan once hit 250 innings in 35 starts, so Mark was throwing a lot more than typical. However Fidrych injured his knee in spring training of his second season, and the Tigers brought him back too soon, which may have led to the rotator cuff tear.

There was still an innocece to baseball in '76. Fidrich exemplified that special time of the bicentenial year. No crazy contracts. Just the fun of the game. Months later, the Yankees acquired Reggie Jackson in free-agency for a mere 5 million but that was just the beginning of the end.. Excessive high contracts and no team loyalty.

Bob Prince's comments on Ken Holtzman not signing a contract and being an OK pitcher based on his win/loss record is very likely what motivated Bill James to turn the baseball world upside down.
