Congratulations. Usually when I find one of those the hood and belly pan are an absolute disaster because somebody decided to kiss a fence post at 50 miles an hour. They were raced hard around the back 40 back in the day. Rarer every year.

I have a 77 El tigre 440 it hasn't been run in about 5 years the clutches are bad but it is scary fast 65 mph feels like 150 mph

Hard to say. I hit 78 across the ice with my El Tigre 5000, but I was smoked when an El Tigre 6000 pulled up on one side and a Ski-Doo 9500 Blizzard on the other side. They humbled me in a cloud of snow dust.

Well the 440 cc 4000 is tuned mellow at 48 hp. Same year 5000 500 is 55 hp. From talking with owners at vintage shows over the decades, I have heard everything from 65 to 75mph for the 440 and 75 to 85 for the 500. Me? I’d split the middle and say 70 for the 440 and 80 for the 500 tops perfect day. This all changes with the six port 1978 to 1981 62hp 500 model. That’s another story.
