My dad and mom bought one of these back in the mid 90's. Traveled the usa for years. The front wheel drive was over the top! Go anywhere. Do anything! Love it.

What a gorgeous built! HEY! GMC! If you're listening to potential customers, THIS IS WHAT WE WANT! Not those new versions made today that are so dark and cramped! GMC, please considering bringing to marked a new, UPDATED version of the motorhomes! All the things mentioned here as the upgrades would be a great starting point for your engineers. Yeah yeah. I know it won't happen. LOL But hey! A guy can dream, right!?

It is one of the most beautiful GMC I’ve ever seen even better than the company that’s in Florida that rebuilts them excellent job even though I know it was six years ago I would buy it in a heartbeat

The powertrain is 100% Toronado with the 455 CU engine and the sidewinder transmission, connected to the engine by a mesh chain. The Toronado was originally assembled on a dedicated assembly line in Lansing, MI; I used to walk by that line every day, in the late 60's early 70's. It was the most hand-built car in all of GM. The assy line was off in one corner of the huge Olds main assembly plant. The engine and transmission were mounted on a cradle/sub-frame, then the Toronado body mated to the powertrain. Periodically, an engine/tranny/frame set was assembled, but pulled off the line, and never installed in a Toronado. That powertrain unit was then diverted and shipped to the site where the GMC RV was assembled. Voila, the powertrain was installed in the RV. So all GMC RV's of this vintage were running GM Olds Toronado powertrains from Lansing, MI.

This is my idea of what a motorhome should be. It's smaller than most of today's RVs, and yet it looks like two adults could live in it comfortably. I'd buy one if I had someone to share in the experience. I'd keep as much of the GMC Motorhome as original as possible, but I'd also upgrade a few things to make it more modern. 🙂

This is my idea of what a motorhome should be. It's small enough that anyone with a driver's license can drive, but it's also large enough, at 26' that one could live in it comfortably while travelling.

Wow... you guys did an absolutely phenomenal job!!! It is a beauty!!!! GMC is crazy not to start manufacturing these again. Put in a cassette toilet accessed from the outside, a couple of 200 watt solar panels on the roof, raise the bathroom ceiling with a skylight and "fantastic fan", and make the back area a dedicated queen size bed and it will be the hit on the market!!!! This looks so easy to drive... Fantastic restoration... GMC should take note and move on this quickly!

I forgot. I have a question to the team that performed this incredibly rebuild. I hope someone answers, because I'll bet that others may be interested too. So with all the new upgrades, if someone has this machine and they are way out of state or country even and they need some repairs, who could they take it to? Would a regular RV shop be able to do repairs since now, nothing on the RV is to spec (GMC design) ?? How would they troubleshoot things without service manuals for the new stuff?

I remember seeing this things on the road in the mid to late 80's. Back then I thought they were made in that year lol. That is how futuristic these motorhomes looked and still do! It is very cool to see the way you guys restore them so beautifully. I like the design of the black gloss along the windows and how it gives it that distinctive look. I think some LED lights would look even better.

Awesome looking Motorhome! I love the colour combination. I love the upgrades. This is *my* idea of what a motorhome should be. At 26' (7.9 metres) in length, 96" (240 cm) wide and about 9' (2.7 metres) tall, including the usually-installed roof air conditioner. With interior head room at 76 inches (190 cm), it's large enough for two people to travel the country in relative comfort, but it's small enough that just about anyone with a standard (non-commercial) driver's license could drive it with relative ease. With upgrades on it like a computer navigation system and rear vision camera, it'd be more modern than it already looks. If I were to buy one, I'd upgrade the engine from a 455 cu. in. (7.5 litre). gas engine to a 395 cu. in. (6.5 litre) GMC L65 Turbo Diesel engine. I'd also have wi-fi installed, I'd also have smart speaker capability, so that one could play *"Alexa"* while travelling. 🙂

Fire suppression system in the engine bay?? Is this an aircraft? 😱
@ravaun5056 жыл бұрын
Front and rear caps are made of fiberglass. The material tends to melt/burn when it has a flame applied. They're just being super cautious.
@albertchehade99166 жыл бұрын
Ravaun: If that is the case, then it is a design flaw, right? Why not install fire suppression in ALL vehicles?
@ravaun5056 жыл бұрын
They installed the system out of FEAR, not out of a necessity. There is no reason a 455 block engine should catch fire, aside from a cracked distributor. And the odds are better than 95% that if that occurred while the vehicle was running it would simply die (no longer having an input of vaporized fuel). Many race cars do have fire suppression systems built in. Then again, the fuel used is so volatile it can explode from a single spark when out of the engine.
@albertchehade99166 жыл бұрын
Ravaun: Now you get in to the race car systems? These are not meant for everyday driving by normal people, race cars are inherently dangerous, normal vehicles should be inherently safe. We could go for years discussing/arguing the point about fire suppression systems and other safety topics but I choose to end this now. Your point is taken, and understood. Take care my friend, bye:) ✋
@ryanlaursen5 жыл бұрын
It seems that batteries cause more fires than the engine on these. Plus, there is only one door to get out.

Watch the whole video at the end it appraised for 159,000 so I'm sure it would have sold in the ballpark of that appraisal
@brainwashingdetergent41286 жыл бұрын
So you revealed in this video that you failed to upgrade the engine to a fuel injection one. I have an idea for you. Chevrolet made a front wheel drive impala SS around 2010 that boasts a 5.3L V8! Thats right a factory front wheel drive moderen 5.3L vortex engine just waiting to go in one of these classy RVs! More power less weight better mpgs more spare parts better reliability! you should really look into it. Awesome work btw!
@darrenleaguecity6 жыл бұрын
Wouldn't have the torque needed
@brainwashingdetergent41286 жыл бұрын
@@darrenleaguecity you out your damn mind 😂😂.. maybe just throwing one in wouldnt be ideal but a few mods maybe a programmer for the computer some different gear ratios and i think that set up would do great. But yea you wouldn't just pull one out of a impala and want to run it like it was in the car in the RV.
@peewee74056 жыл бұрын
A LS is a great engine but it just doesn't have the grunt that this needs like a 455 Olds does.

The Impala fwd power train will not work in this motorhome. The motorhome has the power train sitting front to rear like a rear wheel drive vehicle. The Impala has the power train sitting crossway's left to right totally different setup.
