The Brono is the very definition of a vehicle a manufacturuer should have done frame baths in anticorrosion liquid before assembling them. Every Bronco I have ever seen has been attacked by rust all over it. This one looks pristine. Just kind of breaks your heart to see all the great old vehicles that are now just getting eaten by rust at extremely fast rates and wiull be worthless to repair soon. Beautiful RARE condition Bronco. Nice to see it pretty stock too. Most get hacked up and off road modded because they are already falling apart due to massive rust. Great Video as usual,Mr.Leno.

in 76 i ordered one for $5000. drove it for 10 years until the doors fell off due to rust. mechanically it was as good as when new, but the body was shot. good clearance, plenty of power. and unbelievably short turning capability. it would idle up the steepest incline in low gear, and idle down without using the brakes. best vehicle i ever owned.

I was watching this when I heard who he got this from. "George Wright" that was my uncle. Restored many of these Broncos he was known as the "Bronco Man" he never cut the rear fender if I remember correctly. When he died I know my Dad and George's son Jim each got one. My dad's is as original as they come and Jim's is just a cool. Both are beautiful one of kind Bronco's. I've been in that Bronco a few times when he took us hunting. "Never drive it on the asphalt in four wheel drive" I remember the day, being told as I road in the back of that Bronco back when you could hunt in the hills of Valencia, Ca. Circa 1979-80? Bouquet Canyon I believe.

If you talk to Jim, give him my best. I met him and his mother at Jim's house in Newhall when I bought the Bronco in July 2005. Jim eventually restored the Bronco half-cab (pickup) that George never got around to before his passing, and he was kind enough to send me pictures of it.

My 15 year old son was given a 1984 Ford F250 with the 6.9 diesel. It had been in a wreck and he got the engine going and running smooth, fixed some front suspension, some rear suspension and just has to replace the drivers door and fender, bumper etc. The engine only has 120,000 on it so....but the big thing is that the 6.9 was made by International Harvested and his Great and Great Great Grandfathers retired there. Kinda cool. My son graduated from a 2 year welding program at 15 and has already bought 2 cars of his own......and works part time for a body shop.

The last time I look at a new Jeep "similar" to the CJ...it was $57,000...there no way I would EVER take that off road like we did, My LandCruiser had been on it's side 3 times and we've driven across rivers so deep we rolled up the windows to keep from flooding the interior while we crossed.

In the 1960s and 1970s there was also the International Harvester Scout. A neighbor of ours had one in the very early 1970s, I dunno the model year ... but it was very, very spartan. Removable top, removable doors, folding windshield, and (in their case) no interior upholstery (just metal painted the same as the exterior). Two jeep-ish front seats, and a jeep-type rear set, plus a couple of wheel wells to sit on if you like falling over the side. With the top off and the windshield folded, it was almost exactly shaped like a brick with wheels.

So glad to see this one Jay! My dad died in this same exact model, color and all. He had bought new from dealer during his "I am a cowboy" years, that I know a lot of WWII vets went thru as well. That was '79, and I was in the US Army in Germany, and always thought I would inherit this classic vehicle. As a driver posted in the motor pool, I was already in love with small off-roads. Alas, dad had his final heart attack on the NY Thruway in the middle of a snow storm, rolled it, totaled it. I saw a pic of the crash, and it wasn't pretty. The one time I drove it, I thought about how it would hold up in a roll, and as I had just come off learning to drive APCs, the Bronco felt light and cheap. Ha!

Not unlike the classic Suzuki Samurai, only bigger. Yes, this Bronco it came with PART-TIME 4-wheel drive. You could destroy the transfer case if you drove the vehicle on dry, good traction surfaces with four-wheel drive engaged. Thus, it was (and still is) important to lock the front hubs ONLY when driving in snow or on loose surfaces as found when driving off road. They were not equipped with a viscous coupling system like modern all wheel drive vehicles have. Excellent video !
@quentin33306 жыл бұрын
Jim Cambron Good point!! Maybe you know this, but didn't Jeep have the best (most advanced ) 4wd system back then? Just wondering.. or did Ford, Chevy and Jeep's pretty much have the same system ???
@jimcambron13286 жыл бұрын
As far as I know, in the time of the Bronco (and Bronco II) nobody had a true full-time or all wheel drive traction system. I know that Jeep(tm) did eventually offer an all-wheel drive system in (I think) high-end Cherokee models utilizing a viscus coupling system... Perhaps someone will be able to chime in as to what vehicle manufacturer first offered all-wheel drive. My guess is one that also built racing machines like Lotus, BMW or Mercedes Benz.
@quentin33306 жыл бұрын
Jim Cambron Thx for replying. And i think the Audi Quattro was the first AWD system but i could be wrong. I used to have a snow plowing business and man was it ever nice when i finally bought a new pickup and didn't have to get out and turn the hubs in a blizzard. Just push a button.

This is such a great reminder of a time when the only people who bought SUVs actually NEEDED a SUV.

*My (seemingly) Never Ending FORD, BRONCO Story!... Back In The Day, after graduating from high school, in Ye Ole Year of Our Lord, Nineteen-Hundred-&-Seventy-Nine: when I was a lad of 17, I found a job (which was no mean feat in that recession era; as factories were closing-up shop and relocating, en masse to Asia) as a 'Full Service Gas Station Attendant & Grease Monkey', (AKA: "A Petroleum Transfer Engineer" lol.) I was the guy to whom you said, "Fill er' up and check the oil." Then, as a Full Service Attendant, cleaned all exterior windows, even the head and tail lights, checked tire pressure, transmission and brake fluid, etc. Also doing oil and filter changes, lube-jobs, tire repairs, and the other Old Timey horseless carriage maintenance items. And, of course, meeting, and dating some of the prettiest girls or, "Foxes", in Northern Illinois! The cost of automobile related items were still relatively inexpensive... A quart of 'Pennzoil' was $.75-80 cents! A pack of smokes was just $.35 cents! Gas was $.63-68 cents per gallon, 'Ethel', or, Premium was a bit more expensive, and even had a better aroma. But, prices quickly rose to $1.50+ a year or so later; (Via the man-made, "Energy Crisis") The gas pump price registers only went as high as $.99 cents! We had lines of cars for entire city blocks, just waiting their turn to be ripped off. Anyway, I saved every penny from my, $186.50 paycheck, (That's approximately, $355 bucks in 2020) so that I could buy my very first automobile, a tough lil '74 Ford Bronco. (Saved every penny, with the exception of the $65.00 bucks a week rent, which my father charged me for the privilege of sleeping on an old U.S. Army cot, which was crammed into a walk-in closet lol!) $65.00 a week may not seem like much today, but, that same $65.00 bucks is equivalent to nearly $280.00 a week in 2020! And Yes, I was well aware that I was HIGHLY OVERPAID! To this very day I still don't know why the gas station owner, Dave Johnson (of "Dave's Phillips 66") paid me so much money! When, he could've just hired some poor slob for just about half of that! Like this example in Jay's video, mine was also a very 'GROOVY' orange.. ('Burnt Orange', I believe it was called) or, as my friends so cleverly named it, "The Orange Circus Clown Mobile" lol! I had some of the best times of my life with and IN that old 4-WD Ford! Besides, that ole girl got me out of some pretty tough situations! I ALWAYS had a case of Heineken in an ice-filled cooler, which I placed on the backseat for, 'Easy Access', (just try that in the 21st century!) so I could reach back n-grab a 'Cold One', (or 10) for the long drive home. I didn't even hide the fact that I was gulping down ''Brewskies" from the other drivers. In fact, I once had a Police Cruiser right behind me, I didn't even notice him until looking in my rear-view mirror! I thought for sure I was heading for a ride to the county jail! But, all he did was pull-up beside me and yelled out his window, "Hey, you've got good taste in beer, kid!" and drove away! lol. And, another guy, who was driving a beautiful new 'Land Yacht', a massive Lincoln Town Car, roll his window down and ask me, "Hey buddy, got an extra brew for a poor old thirsty guy?" And I tossed him one too! That poor old Bronco was beat half to death by the time I got Her, but, She ran perfectly! The famous Ford 302-CI was bulletproof! She had well over 200-K on her when I sold Her to a local farmer. (I never did any repairs on Her other than replacing the original factory installed water pump) The dealer, (It was a Ford, Lincoln, Mercury dealer called, 'Meyers-U-Drive', in Freeport, Illinois) filled the rust holes with the poor mans body repair kit, 'Bondo' , and painted Her the original 'Circus Orange' color. But, within a few months the rust was bleeding right back through Her tank-like sheet metal. Once, as I was 'a-toolin' down the road, in good ole Rockford, Illinois, when I suddenly heard this CRASH, CLANK, BANG, BOOM, BOINK, BOINK, BOINK!... When I looked back, I saw the thick steel cage that protected the transfer case, laying in the middle of the road... of course it happened just as a Police Cruiser rolled-up behind me, shining his spotlight on it! I ran back and explained the situation to the Officer, he just laughed and said, "That old thing has seen better days, aye boy!" And he just drove away. That poor old Bronco was so full of rust that She was leaving pieces of Herself everywhere! Plus, when the air hit the undercarriage on a windy day, it would blow rusted chunks of metal and rust-dust right into the cab! I drove, (beat) Her for over 7 years until the transmission began to fail. I actually got $900.00 for the, now pile-O-crap Bronco too! Which is the equivalent to $3,180 bucks in 2020! I'd give my left gonad to have another tough little Bronco! The End, FINALLY! lol.*

Slot mags are the perfect wheel for any old muscle car. My friend had them on a jacked up rear ended 74 Charger. Was sweet. Hard to sit in a jacked up car with freshly armorall'd seats during a braking event hahaha. HAhaha CA smog checks while the rest of us don't even run CATS.

Takes me back to the days of road trips, camping, and not being scared of a little dirt/mud or bouncing off a tree and scratching it. I see so many monstrous extremely expensive 4x4's with low profile tires and not a speck of dirt on them. Also, if you break down good luck working on it. I would take one of these oldies but goodies any day. Also, enjoyed the video as it is not some restro/mod, or hot rod. Prefer the old stuff and relevant history lessons.

I wanted a bobtail so much when I was younger, but couldn't find one that wasn't a rust bucket that I could afford. (I bought an absolutely rust free 78 f150) Now they are ridiculously expensive even in horrible condition... The best alternative today in American market is the jeep LJ. I bought a TJ Rubicon in 03, the first year. Driven it all over the U.S., in all weather. Rescued countless stuck /stranded vehicles and people. Pulled a whole bunch of 10000lb and up vehicles out of the snow. (including one semi). She's still my rig.

we need a fairly low key high efficiency engine/hybrid built like this and KISS. had many miles in these boxes. could be a bit bouncy on long highway rides with expansion strips bucking the keesters. and like they said almost anyone could fix almost anything that broke. and very easy to park.

This Bronco Ranger bring's back memories of my '75. Mine was a 'top of the line' model and even had air bags inside the front coil springs. I had a lot of drive line problems that the Dealership service manage and I just could NOT correct. That's a whole other story. This one shown here is just wonderful,..in my opinion!

Do not drive on highway in 4 wheel drive with the hubs locked.
@johnnymossville6 жыл бұрын
agree, DO NOT do that. hahaha
@bigredc2225 жыл бұрын
Yea I was surprised how little Jay knew about four wheel drive, I don't think there was anything back then that had full time four wheel drive. I bet there's a sticker on the back of the visor with instructions on how to operate the four wheel drive, and it says, don't drive over 35 or 45 in four wheel drive.
@4orrcountry5 жыл бұрын
@@bigredc222 Also made in the '60's, Jeepster Commando, Jeep Wagoneer both had 4WD with locking hubs like the Bronco. International Scout did also.

There were switchable full/part time 4x4 vehicles. Jeep Selec Trac, for example, with a lockable center diff.
@bigredc2225 жыл бұрын
Eric Anderson If it's full time it can't be switched off, that's what full time means, all the time, full time 4WD is basically the same as AWD, but not exactly, full time 4WD has low a range like regular 4x4, where as AWD doesn't, that's the only difference as far as I know.

These were very popular in New Orleans during the 70s. Everyone in my neighbor hood had them as their second car. I remember riding in quite a few back then.

While I was in the U.S. Navy, my Dad tried talking me into buying a 78' Bronco from him, as he was a Ford salesman and he knew what I liked. He was one of the best salesman regionally, I knew I could get it for only a few hundred over invoice, but I had to tell him, the Bronco was no longer a real Bronco imho.
