1977 Gillig Coach School Bus Ride-Along [Detroit 6-71]

From my trip to the Pacific Bus Museum back in March. This bus has a Detroit 6-71. The person sitting next to me (Luke) actually owns the sister bus to this, along with Joe (‪@buslover333‬). The buzzer was going off the whole time for some reason but I loved riding this bus. There are pictures of this bus on my Flickr, and more videos of this bus are coming soon!

I used to ride Gillig Bros busses from 1955 to 1962 in elementary school in Belmont, CA. From the first time I rode on one I was in love and fascinated by them. I always liked riding in the front so I could watch the driver. Occasionally a substitute bud would show up..an old GMC or an old REO. Over the years a Crown would be added to the fleet, but the Gilligs were my favorite. Busses have always interested me. People thought I grow up to be a bus driver. Closest I got was driving a 10 passenger van bringing folks to church.

I was trying hard to figure out which type of bus I rode in the majority of the time I was in elementary school. I know my school district had a few Crown Supercoaches which was easily recognizable. But I only spent a couple trips in those. After seeing the shape of the rear end and rear windows a Gillig, I knew this was probably it. Watching this video, I instantly recognized the texture of the dash, the shape of the overhangs. This is the one! I spent so many years of my life in the 80's and 90's in these things!

I loved driving the Crown Coaches but nothing beat a Gillig from a driver’s perspective (imo).

Over 30 years ago I rode on an early 60s Gillig with a Hall-Scott inline 6 diesel engine with a 5 speed manual transmission and you shift to the right to 1st gear instead of the left.

unfamililar with the black clock device on the dash, what was this used for?

That box is a Sangamo tachograph. The windup clock has a wax-coated paper disk that records engine revs for up to 24 hours. The top of the box is the tachometer. The speedograph does the same thing for vehicle speed.

If I’m not mistaken this was an ex FUSD bus. The very same one I used to ride in the 90’s! The idle on the later 6-71 Gilligs seemed slower and kinda like a Cummins.

I went back and was able to find some info on this bus, it was bought new by LAUSD in 1977, then was transferred to Alliance Bus Lines in the 80s where it remained in service until 2009. Lucky you for getting to ride one of these either way!

@@saftlinerc2 Just saw the history on this bus. Sadly isn’t the bus I thought it was but is identical to it actually. Same dash layout, lights, everything. Even that vehicle stats grapher box on the dash that I never knew what it was as a kid.

Good question. All the Gilligs that use to be at my local school district (all retired now) Were 5 speeds, with 1st being a granny low so start off in 2nd unless on a steep hill. They were all reverse H pattern so 1st was up and to the right, reverse right and down, 5th left and up.
