For me "Sybil" remains to be one of the most powerful made for tv movies I have ever seen. Sally Field is just phenomenal in this. Her Emmy was well deserved.

In a behind the scenes interview with the director he said he got a call from the real Sybil and she said she felt the only actress that could portray her right would be Sally and the director said "you know thats funny that you should say that because she just auditioned for it and was terrific" its crazy how things just fall into place sometimes.

I always loved how whenever she looked into the mirror she saw her personalities, such as when vanessa is getting ready for the date with richard or when mary and victoria look into the storefront window. just a little detail that always stuck with me

watched it last night for the first time in over 30 years. whatever the controversy, I still think Sally Field's performance is the best I've seen by any actress in a tv role. bit melodramatic in places ( it is 70's tv so nothing unusual there ) but sublime in others.

It was really disturbing for me to see this film. It hit just a bit too close to home for me. That being said, Sally Field did a good job because she as able to provoke such an emotional response from me. She played her part almost too well.

I loved Sally Fields in this movie.I think it's her best work.The story is about a women's horrible childhood ,and the incredible way her psyche is able to cope with the the torture and abuse she suffered as child.This is a good story ,that anyone who works in the field of mental health,should watch.It's also a inspirational story,one that makes you realize that people can overcome even the most traumatic things.Note that Sibel was in therapy for many years,but she did go on to lived many years painting and enjoying her life.The book is very long but if you like to read this is one you won't be sorry you read.Either way you lean about this women's life,the 2007's movie ,the one with Sally Fields or the book.It's worth it .But I loved the movie with Sally, it's best! Just an opinion!

Absolutely my favorite movie, such acting talent there. I still think both Sally ánd Joanne should both have received an Emmy. (the chemistry between both actresses was what made this TV film turn out to be thát good, IMHO)

One of the most gut-wrenching movies I ever saw , but watching Sally Field's "Bravura" performance is worth it, her remarkable portrayal of a woman who was mentally tortured sealed her fate as one of the best actors ever, a far cry from Gidget and The Flying Nun (though I loved Sister Bertrille ). Also enjoyed Joanne Woodward and Brad Davis as well.

If you like this, look up The Three Faces of Eve. Thats another story about the woman who first brought the story of MPD to the scientific community. One of the first documented cases. It stars, ironically enough, Joanne Woodward as Eve, the victim.

Sally was brilliant in the part of Sybil. I was going to upload the entire DVD last night but my son warned me that YT would rip it down right away so I didn't bother. But it remains one of my favourite movies or all time and the book is also a favourite. This is one of my favourite scenes as well.

This movie gets too little credit. To be honest, it might be one of the most disturbing movies I've ever seen. And disturbing doesn't mean torture porn. It left an impact on me. You see this young woman who has been suffering all her life, who needs to protect herself by becoming an entirely different person. You see her as a little girl, who is so beaten down, who has suffered through horrific abuse by her mother when a mother is supposed to be their child's protector. And her father who knew how his daughter was suffering, and yet did nothing. It's sad, no, it's downright heartbreaking. People think a movie needs explicit gore and the usual exploitation factors to be disturbing, and hey, that's your thing, enjoy yourself. For me to be disturbed, I have to think this in general words: "How can we people look at ourselves and think that this is okay?" But that's just me.

youre very welcome. i had never seen it either till we watched it in my psychology class my senor year of HS (I'm a junior in college now) and it def left an impression. In my opinion its one of those movies everyone has to see at least once in their lives whether they like it in the end or not

Amazing acting from Sally and Joanne. When Sybil's therapist, Dr. Wilbur, realizes the extent of the trauma that Sybil's experienced, she expresses her horror. "What the hell did that monster do you?!"

I agree! People are always talking about how this was a false case and blah blah and thats not the point. Just watch it as a movie with emotions and such. In the movie, Dr. Wilbur does become super protective and maternal towards Sybil and I love that.

Oh I agree. One of my favorite scenes is right after this video ends and when Sybil finally comes back, the doctor asks how she feels and Sybil says "Really tired....but relieved." Because as her alters, she was explaining to the doctor what her mother did and so when it was Sybil, she felt that sense of relief. This is such a powerful movie.

i have borderline personality disorder and have experienced dissociative moments many times where i either black out or i am conscious of whats going on, i can hear and see whats happening but its not me who's in control and talking and say some pretty awful things. its a difficult thing to deal with.

I remember watching this movie three years ago, quite possibly one of the most amazing movies I have watched and Sally Field's performance as Sybil was quite impressive. It's a shame that apparently the story is a hoax and Dr. Cornelia Wilbur coerced the real "Sybil" to make up her symptoms and injected her with heavy duty drugs in order to get her to reveal her other "personalities". Still an amazing film, just sucks that both the book and film made Dr. Wilbur famous and wealthy at the expense of her patient's health and well being.

Taylor Clay The original is a 3 hour version. It was made for TV hence the suspenseful black out fades and why its so long. This one is a lot better than the remake although the remake follows the book more accurately.

if even half of what shreiber describes was true, poor thing had no other choice, I can hardly imagine it, it's unconscionable to think anyone, but especially a mother would even think to hurt a child in those ways. it so fascinates me that she was able to cope this way, but yet angers me too to think of such suffering. sally did it so well.

It is 10 times better but it is twice as long. 3 hours because it was originally a TV movie so they showed a little bit every week. You can buy it off Amazon for pretty cheap. Thats where I got my copy and I just ripped it to my computer to get these clips on here.

I have it on DVD but I can't upload the whole thing or it will get flagged on copyright grounds and taken down. I got my DVD on Amazon for like 8 dollars so its not an expensive movie.

Yeah I like that version as well because its more accurate to the book but the original will always be my favorite. Also the original is about twice the length of the new one at around 3 hours long because it was made for television hence the dramatic black outs at the end of scenes hahah

Girl, Interrupted about Borderline Personality Disorder. I love that movie because I too have Borderline Personality Disorder. Prozac Nation is about depression. Both of those movies were originally books and both are amazing to read.

Oh yes sorry I was on my phone, I meant to say Sally Field but absent mindedly wrote Sybil. And I had seen that information in an interview with her just after watching this. I think Sally Field was amazing for this film, she expresses distress and mania extremely well. Something about when she cries it always hits an emotional cord with me, it's very heart felt and real. She deserves a lot more credit than she's received!

Agree with you also. I read everyone has multiple personalities based on our growth at anyone time in our lives, but they are merged into a sum total in the present moment. It fits with my experience of regression therapy: The vocabulary available to me at those ages was very different under hypnosis as it was in real life, with the 13 year old have a much richer one (and more vulgar!)
